1 THE GOVERNMENT OF THE REPUBLIC OF TRINIDAD AND TOBAGO MINISTRY OF EDUCATION NATIONAL CERTIFICATE OF SECONDARY EDUCATION 2010 (Level 1) VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS PAPER I PRACTICAL TIME 3 HOURS
2 VISUAL AND PERFORMING ARTS PRACTICAL PAPER I GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS: 1. The assessment of Visual and Performing Arts Practical will be carried out During the period timetabled for the conduct of the NCSE oral and practical examinations. 2. Administrators/ schools will make time tabling arrangements for the administration and scoring the assessment. 3. There are FOUR (4) Sections in this paper: Visual Arts Music Drama Dance 4. The actual time allotted for this Practical Paper may vary by the Section and Option selected within the given Section. For example, a Music Option may require no more than a 5 minute performance while a Visual Arts Option may require a 180 minute session. 5. Answer ONE (1) question ONLY from any one of the four Sections. Each Section has more than one Option. 6. The student s script for the drama improvisation option is to be given to students 15 minutes before they are assessed. 1
3 SECTION 1 -VISUAL ARTS INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Candidates may select ONE (1) question from any of the following three Options: a) Drawing b) Colour and Design c) Three-Dimensional Studies 2. Any suitable colour medium may be used. Paints should be water based and fast drying. 3. Charcoal, pastel and pencil work must be fixed. 4. Unless specifically stated, the dimensions of the paper should not be less than 40 cm x 30 cm or more than 60 cm x 50 cm. 5. Fabric pieces should not be less than 45 cm x 45 cm and not more than 60 cm x 60 cm. 6. All three-dimensional studies pieces should be at least 15 cm in any direction with the exception of jewellery, unless stated otherwise. 7. Your work in this Section will be scored as follows: Craftsmanship 10 marks Design/ Composition 10 marks Originality 5 marks 2
4 OPTION 1 DRAWING Using any suitable medium such as charcoal, coloured-pencil, crayon, pastel, pen and ink, pencil or any suitable combination of media, create a drawing composition from direct observation based on one of the following themes: 1. Clay Vessels an arrangement of one to three clay vessels of varying sizes. 2. Fruits a bunch (hand) of green figs (five to ten figs). 3. Fruits- three tomatoes, one melongene and a green sweet pepper. 4. A view from a window. OPTION 2 COLOUR and DESIGN Create ONE (1) of the following: 1. An Imaginative Composition 2. A Graphic Design 3. An edition of three (3) prints 4. A design for a piece of fabric You design MUST be based on ONE (1) of the following themes A church, temple or a mosque Flowers The catch The label for a new perfume The front cover for a story book on Aliens 3
5 OPTION 3 THREE-DIMENSIONAL STUDIES Questions in this Option are based on one (1) of the following areas: Ceramics Leather Craft Decorative Craft Basketry/ Fibre Arts Textiles/ Surface Decoration Sculpture Answer one (1) of the following questions: 1. Design and create a wall hanging on the theme Sweet Trinidad and Tobago. 2. Create and decorate a mask on the theme Pain. 3. Produce a centre piece to be used on the head table for a Sea Food Seminar. 4. Based on any religious festival, design a costume to be used as part of a school play on the festival. 5. Design and create a plaque to be given to the top marathon winner of your school s annual marathon race. In answering one of the above questions, you may use but not restricted to any of the following materials and techniques listed: Suggested Materials Paper, Fabric, Beads, Cardboard, Clay, Fibre, Leather, Paper, Shells, Straw, Styrofoam, Wire, wood, dried leaves/flowers plaster of Parris. Suggested Techniques Appliqué, Assemblage, Carving, Cutting, Modeling, Papier-Mache, Pasting, Stamping, Weaving, Tooling, Dying. 4
6 SECTION 2 - MUSIC INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Candidates may sing or play a melodic instrument. 2. The approximate performance time for each student is 5 to 10 minutes. 3. Students (with the assistance or on the advice of their teachers) may select and perform a musical piece within the stipulated guidelines. 4. Students are allowed accompaniment, however, the accompanist is prohibited from playing the melody. 5. Each candidate s performance will be assessed as follows: Solo Piece (rhythm, pitch, timbre, tempo, dynamics, phrasing technique, style and interpretation) Scales and arpeggios (two are suggested: one related to the piece performed, and any one other) 13 marks 8 marks Viva Voce (related to the piece performed) 4 marks GUIDELINES FOR CHOOSING THE PIECE Melodic Instruments and Voice: Key signature - Any key is acceptable, however C, G or F is recommended. It should be suitable to the voice of the child. Tempo - Any tempo is acceptable, however slow to moderate is recommended as a minimum. Number of bars - Any number of bars is acceptable, however 16 bars are recommended as a minimum. Dynamics - Students should be encouraged to play with dynamics. It is recommended to be assessed as part of expression. The piece Ode to Joy (L V Beethoven) is a sample piece of the minimum requirements for a melodic instrument. Note this piece is in G major. 5
7 SECTION 3 - DANCE INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Candidates will have approximately minutes for their preparation and performance. 2. Candidates may select ONE (1) question from any of the four(4) Options available. 3. Each candidate s performance will be scored as follows: Creativity 5 marks Presentation/Performance/Communication 5 marks Awareness/use of space 5 marks Application of technique 4 marks Suitability of accompaniment 3 marks Appropriateness of costume/dance attire 3 marks 4. All dance sequences/pieces should be between (1 ½) minutes to two (2) minutes duration.. Select and perform one (1) of the following: 1) Perform a solo piece using the theme Love or the theme Hate. Incorporate all the elements of dance. 2) The dry season is upon us. Show in dance movements the following scenario: You are a tree in the savannah and the heat and dryness is shrinking you up. The birds no longer sit on your dry branches. You are about to fall when people take notice and try to save you. 6
8 3) Working with a partner, create a movement phrase using one of the following contrasting pairs of spatial words: near/far, over/under, in/out, separate/together, toward/away, around/through. 4) Create a 48 count sequence using steps from one of the following local folk dances: Bele Sailor Jharoo Bongo Joropo 7
9 SECTION 4 - DRAMA INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Candidates selecting Drama will be assessed in ONE (1) of two Options: Drama Improvisation Stagecraft 2. For the Drama Improvisation Option, candidates will be provided with three (3) themes or topics, minutes before a performance. 3. For the Stagecraft Option, candidates are required to plan and prepare in advance of the. 4. For any option, candidates may work in groups of 3 to 5. 8
10 OPTION 1 DRAMA IMPROVISATION Scripts for this option will be handed out 10 to 15 minutes before your performance. You/ your group will choose one of three themes and create a short scene based on it. The teacher will assign students to groups. Your performance will be scored as follows: Communicating with body 5 marks Communicating with voice 5 marks Communicating with mind 5 marks (Awareness of the human environment and relationships) Awareness/ use of space 5 marks The ability to work in groups (Group cohesiveness) 5 marks OPTION 2 STAGECRAFT Read the following excerpt below based on An Ice-cream Shop and complete questions 1 to 3 : SETTING: An ice cream shop. (Girl is standing at an ice cream counter. Mr. Ice is standing behind the counter.) Hmmmm... what do I want... there's SO much to choose from. Over 50 flavors! Wow! I don't know how I'll ever pick! What do you have? Strawberry, Chocolate, Mint Chocolate Chip... (Girl puts hand on her hip.) Wait! Don't tell me all the boring regular flavors! I want to hear the cool ones! Sure, no problem! We have Pistachio, Marshmallow Mash, Moose... Wait! (Looking confused.) What? 9
11 Questions 1 to 3. I was wondering...do you have samples? Nooooo. Not just the teensiest, eensiest taste? Sorry. Well, go on. We have orange sherbet, lemon sherbet, raspberry... Stop! What?! Wait! Don't tell me all the boring regular flavors! I want to hear the cool ones! Sure, no problem! We have Pistachio, Marshmallow Mash, Moose... Wait! (Looking confused.) What? I was wondering...do you have samples? (Excerpt taken from 50 flavours by Leigh Franklin) 1. Design two costumes which will best reflect the two characters in the excerpt. They can be drawn, made to fit models (using dolls) or life size. 2. Create an appropriate backdrop based on ideas given in the piece by the two characters. 3. Using a medium available (voice, musical instruments, etc) create a tune/ song that can be played during the piece. Your work will be scored as follows: Costume Design (sketches or model dolls or life (10 marks) size for two costumes) 5 marks each. Backdrop (8 marks) Song/tune (7 marks) END OF PAPER 10
