6 Acknowledgements The initial idea for this book was allowed a 'test-run' at a major conference at the University of Warwick in January The editors would like to thank those organizations and departments which made that event the success and pleasure that it was - the Centre for the Study of the Renaissance and the European Humanities Research Centre at the University of Warwick, with special thanks to Peter Mack, J.R. Mulryne, Margaret Shewring, and Charmaine Witherall (without whom it certainly would not have been possible). Julie Sanders would also like to express deep gratitude to John Higham and Jane Clinton who took over the running of the event on the weekend concerned, allowing her to avoid complete collapse! A number of the speakers on that occasion have essays in this book, but there are others whose contributions we must acknowledge. To all those who came, spoke, chaired, and made tea, many thanks, but special thanks to Martin Butler and Richard Dutton for their support, then as now. Inevitably, since that event, many others have also contributed to this project in ways both practical and supportive: the editors would therefore like to thank their colleagues in the Departments of English at both Keele University and the University of Warwick, and their editor at Macmillan, Charmian Hearne, who has been there from the start and whose presence at the original conference, as well as her ongoing professionalism and care, was, and is, much appreciated. Janet Clare's chapter is a revised version of one which appears in Contexts of Renaissance Comedy which she co-edited with Roy Eriksen (Oslo, 1996). It is reproduced here with the kind permission of the University of Tromse Press. Thanks are also due to Macmillan Press for permission to reprint the chapter by Richard Dutton. Finally, Julie Sanders would like to say an especial thank you to Kate Chedgzoy and Sue Wiseman for all their help, advice, phone calls, love, and support. She claims sole ownership of any remaining errors. vi
