La Piana Beyond Collaboration: Strategic Restructuring of Non-Profit Organizations LETTER FROM EXECUTIVE & ARTISTIC DIRECTOR As EMV continues to evolve, it strikes me that one of our defining organizational characteristics is our ability to collaborate successfully with an amazing variety of partners. These partnerships vary from shortterm, informal arrangements between presenters, to intense and complicated multi-year commitments with producing partners requiring major investments of time, money and other resources. All are aimed at achieving a level of performance and community impact that we would not be able to reach on our own. As arts consultant, Paul Gravett, in his 2015 study The Art of Collaboration makes clear, this effort requires Time, Nimbleness, Flexibility, Openness, Resilience, Transparency and above all, Patience. While embodying these qualities does not always come easily, the results we have seen speak for themselves was the busiest year in EMV s history. With the help of our partners, over the course of the year, EMV welcomed almost 20,000 audience members to our events. Despite this impressive growth, we have managed to remain debt free and in excellent financial health as we contemplate our 50th anniversary in This is a impressive achievement and demonstrates why EMV is now recognized as one of the most innovative and collaborative arts organizations in Vancouver as well as one of the successful presenting and producing organizations of early music in North America. Of equal importance to our artistic partners, of course, are all of our hard-working board members, staff, volunteers, donors and government partners without whom none of this would be possible. To all our collaborators, at every level, I offer sincere thanks. Together we are creating an organization that is making increasingly extraordinary things happen and making our community of music lovers stronger in the process. Matthew White Executive & Artistic Director WE THANK OUR VOLUNTEERS The work of Early Music Vancouver is made possible through the generous assistance of our many volunteers who offer their time, skills, and support.

EDUCATION & OUTREACH THE EARLY MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME In the Fall of 2017, Early Music Vancouver piloted a new scholarship programme awarding up to 10 scholarships to BC residents. Qualified candidates are professional-track music students or active professional musicians seeking to develop skills in early music performance. This programme is generously supported by Bryan & Gail Atkins. "Thanks to the EMV Scholarship I received this year, I have been able to take lessons with renowned Canadian soprano and voice teacher, Nancy Argenta. The instruction I received on baroque style, ornamentation and vocal technique have been instrumental to my repertoire preparation and also made me feel much more prepared for professional engagements. To see this type of support being so generously offered to young artists in BC gives me hope that early music will thrive in this province for years to come!" Sinéad White, EMV Scholarship Recipient THE BAROQUE ORCHESTRA MENTORSHIP PROGRAMME Developing the next generation of period performers, students in the BOMP rehearse weekly over each academic term at UBC with a core group of five professional musicians led by the PBO s Music Director, Alexander Weimann. This programme is generously supported by Vic & Joan Baker. EMV INSTRUMENT COLLECTION Over the years, EMV has assembled a valuable collection of unique historical instruments. This collection is available to the community and benefits many musicians and established cultural institutions that produce concerts and educational programmes of repertoire requiring specialized instruments. OTHER EDUCATION & OUTREACH ACTIVITIES In addition to our formal education and outreach programmes, EMV also hosts open dress rehearsals, preconcert discussions before all concerts, documentary screenings, and public performance/lectures relating to our repertoire at UBC s Green College, and St. Anselm s Church.
EMV S STRATEGIC PLAN MISSION: To engage, enrich, and educate through music. VISION: A world in which the power of music inspires all people to value and engage with the arts. VALUES: We promote historically informed performance practices We deliver inspirational experiences We foster collaborative relationships We strive for excellence in everything we do Since 2014 EMV has participated in regular Strategic Planning and annual Business Planning. This process has become a vital part of realizing our organizational aspirations. The most recent plan covers and culminates in our 50th anniversary season in With one more year to go we have made significant progress on all of our stated priorities. UPDATE ON EMV S STRATEGIC PRIORITIES: 1. DEVELOP INNOVATIVE ARTISTIC PARTNERSHIPS Over the last year EMV worked with more presenting and producing partners than ever before. Partners in included the Pacific Baroque Orchestra, Vancouver Opera, The Vancouver Symphony, The University of British Columbia, UBC s Green College, The Vancouver Chopin Society, Gli Angeli Genève, the Ottawa Chamber Music Society, the Pacific Baroque Festival, Christ Church Cathedral Victoria, and more! 2. EXPAND THE PROFILE AND MARKET OF THE PACIFIC BAROQUE ORCHESTRA marked the inaugural season of the Pacific Baroque Series in Victoria. This new series has been designed as a stable presenting platform for the Pacific Baroque Orchestra. The medium-term goal is to inaugurate a third satellite series produced by EMV for the orchestra in another major urban area within the province of British Columbia. Over the course of , EMV also secured two major North American tours and a recording for the PBO will be the busiest season in the orchestra s history. 3. EXPAND LOCAL AND REGIONAL EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMMING INITIATIVES EMV has continued to provide more opportunities for local and regional artists and students through our Baroque Orchestra Mentorship at UBC, our BC Scholarship Programme, and through an increasing number of free events as part of our Green College and St. Anselm s Church series. 4. BUILD FINANCIAL CAPACITY With the hiring of new full time Development Coordinator and a part-time Corporate Sponsorship Consultant, EMV has taken its first structural steps in increasing donated revenue. The results so far are a clear success with the increased staffing costs more than paying for themselves.
FUNDRAISING & FINANCIAL SUMMARY $350, YEAR FUNDRAISING $300,000 $250,000 $200,000 $150, In May of 2017, EMV added a new full-time Development Coordinator to oversee and support our fundraising activities. Adding this position represented an investment of roughly $50,000 over the course of the year, but increased our donated revenue by roughly $85,000 or 33% from the Fiscal Year. TOTAL BUDGET: $1,500,000 Artist Payments 34.4% Administrative Expenses 7.8% Presentation Expenses 22% Tickets & Subscriptions 35.9% Promotion & Advertising 14.8% Staff Salaries 21% Other Earned Revenue Endowment Interest 1.9% 4.5% Public Sector (Government Support) 25.5% Performance Fees 7.1% Individual Donations & Sponsorships 25.2% EMV would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all of our incredibly generous donors who have made our success in recent years a reality.
MESSAGE FROM EMV S BUSINESS MANAGER NATHAN LORCH EMV remains committed to maintaining a balanced financial position as we continue growing. Despite completing one of our busiest concert seasons and festivals ever we remain in excellent financial shape. As our budget grew by 10% over the prior year, we strived to ensure a consistent proportion of those increases ended up on the stage, translating our financial growth into more and higher quality performances. Though the year did end with a small cash deficit of less than 1% of our total budget, this was supported by a small existing surplus from prior years. Ticket sales, performance fees and sales made up almost half of EMV s total revenue for the year. We still rely on donor support and government funding to make up the other half. EMV AUDIENCE GROWTH: TOTAL VANCOUVER ATTENDANCE TOURING PROJECTS 2014/2015: 5,948 4, /2016: 11,647 3, /2017: 12,053 4, /2018: 14,826 4,975 FEES PAID TO PERFORMING ARTISTS $600,000 $500,000 $400,000 $300,000 $200,
ENDOWMENT: VALUE $2,000,000 $1,500,000 $1,000,000 $500, $80,000 ENDOWMENT: INCOME $60,000 $40,000 $20, EMV S ENDOWMENT FUND In 2004, longtime EMV supporters Vic Baker and Dr. Stephen Drance championed the idea of starting an Endowment Fund to secure the financial stability of the organization for years to come. Fourteen years later, the EMV Endowment Fund has grown to nearly $2,000,000 in capital and produces nearly $70,000 in annual income, roughly 5% of EMV s total budget. The remarkable growth in EMV s Endowment Fund has been due to the generosity of forward-thinking donors, as well as matching grants from the Department of Canadian Heritage. As EMV grows as an organization, we plan to continue our commitment to strong fiscal stewardship by working to increase our Endowment Fund capital to $4,000,000 by An Endowment of that size would provide EMV with over $140,000 annually, or roughly 10% of our current annual budget.
EMV THANKS SPENCER CORRIGAL Since joining EMV s Board of Directors as Treasurer in 2013, Spencer Corrigal, CPA has been an indispensable part of EMV s success and commitment to strong fiscal oversight. A native of Richmond, Spencer grew up playing music on the piano and clarinet. As a young man, he discovered that he had a particular interest in and love for the work of early composers like Vivaldi, and especially Bach. While he stopped playing music in his teens, Spencer rediscovered his love of early music in adulthood. Early music expanded my horizons, said Spencer, who works as an accountant here in Vancouver, in particular I find the historical connections very interesting. In 2002, Spencer attended his first EMV performance - The Caledonian Flute with Chris Norman. From that time on, Spencer became a regular EMV audience member. In 2012, Spencer saw an ad for a Board Treasurer in an EMV programme, and officially joined the Board in May of I was looking to lend my professional expertise in a volunteer capacity, and was enthusiastic when the Treasurer position came up, said Spencer, I don t have the most experience with volunteering and philanthropy, but what I ve seen is that it s important to connect with a cause that means something to you was a particularly interesting time for the Board, as EMV s long-time Artistic Director, José Verstappen, was retiring and Matthew White, EMV s current Executive & Artistic Director, was stepping into his role. EMV has evolved in a really positive way in the time that I ve been involved, said Spencer, I m so proud to be a part of this organization. To see the way the fantastic board and staff have aligned together through strategic planning really impressed me. In 2018, Spencer announced that he will be stepping down as EMV s Treasurer, but will continue on the Board of Directors. The EMV Staff & Board of Directors would like to thank Spencer for his years of great work for our organization. Since Spencer first became our treasurer, EMV s budget has grown and changed a lot. Though this change came with a certain amount of risk, he has been a centrally important part of helping us navigate it successfully. Progress often requires discipline as well as a certain amount of faith in the idea that well laid plans will generally work out for the best. Spencer gave us all the confidence that it was okay to take well-considered risks in pursuit of great things. As a result, during his tenure we have put on some extraordinary events and have managed to create a more secure financial foundation for EMV in the process. Thank you Spencer.
