> Bonjour, ça va? Hello, how are you? Ça va bien, merci, et vous? Fine, thank you, and yourself? 'ou' et 'ille' pronunciation practice qu'est-ce que...? what...? c'est... this is / it's il y a... there is / there are Listen to the following text and repeat out loud after each sentence. Pay particular attention to the sounds ou: and ille: nous bonjour la famille The key to acquiring a good accent is careful listening. Pause your sound player
when necessary. CHEZ NOUS At our place Bonjour, ça va? Hello, how are you? Ça va bien, merci, et vous? All's well, thank you, and yourself? Ça va bien. Qu'est-ce que c'est? All's well. What's this? C'est une maison. It's a house. C'est ma maison. It's my house. La maison est à la campagne. C'est une ferme. The house is in the countryside. It's a farm. Ici, c'est calme. Il y a des vaches et il y a des poules. Here, it's calm. There are cows and there are hens.
C'est une belle maison. It's a beautiful house. Elle est comment? What is it like? And that, what's that, on the photo? Qu'est-ce que c'est? What's this? Yes, it's a very beautiful house, it's old. Elle est grande, elle est blanche. It is big, it is white. C'est la maison de la famille. It's the family's house. C'est une photo de famille, ça. C'est ma famille. That's a family photo, that is. It's my family.
Here are the women in my family, it's a nice, small, close-knit family. The women show solidarity where we come from! Solidarity between women is important, isn't it? On the photo, there's my grandmother to the right, my sister to the left and my daughter in front. The different generations, that's what life's about! C'est bon, la vie de famille. C'est absolument charmant. J'adore ça. It's good, family life. It's absolutely charming. I adore it. Now we're going to study some key expressions that turn up frequently in French. 1) Qu'est-ce que...? Qu'est-ce que...? is the French to use when you begin a question What...? It looks more complicated than it sounds: kes-ke Qu'est-ce que c'est? What's this? It's an album of family photos. Qu'est-ce que tu dis? What are you saying? Je dis juste: «À bientôt, bonnes vacances!» I am just saying: 'See you soon, have a good holiday!' Qu'est-ce que tu lis? What are you reading? Je lis un article politique intéressant. I am reading an interesting article on politics.
Qu'est-ce que tu manges? What are you eating? Je mange un yaourt nature. I am eating a natural yoghurt. Qu'est-ce qu'elle fait? What is she doing? Elle cherche un papier important. She is looking for an important document. 2) C'est The question Qu'est-ce que c'est? What is it? / What's this? contains the expression c'est C'est can have different meanings. It can be the equivalent of It's... and it can mean This is... C'est calme. It's calm. C'est petit ici. It's small here. C'est moderne. It's modern. C'est très utile. It's very useful. C'est bon. It's good. C'est bien. It's right. / It's good. C'est ma mère.
This is my mother. C'est une question difficile. This is a difficult question. C'est ma nouvelle adresse. This is my new address. C'est un projet passionnant. This is an exciting project. It depends on the context. For example, if someone asks you who's on the telephone, you might reply: C'est ma soeur. It's my sister. And when making an introduction, you might say: C'est ma soeur. This is my sister. Unlike This is... in English, C'est... can go with plural nouns in spoken French: C'est une maison. This is a house. C'est une pomme. This is an apple. C'est des maisons. These are houses. C'est des pommes. These are apples. 3) Il y a Il y a is another common expression that works both in the singular and the plural. It means There is... or There are... Il y a une maison. There is a house. Il y a des pommes. There are some apples. So you can have a question: Qu'est-ce qu'il y a chez vous? What is there at your place? There are some apples and pears.
There is also a specific use of il y a in the expression What's the matter? Qu'est-ce qu'il y a? What's the matter? Rien, ça va, c'est parfait! Nothing, it's OK, it's perfect! To ask a friend How's it going? the question is: If all's well you can reply: or Ça va? Ça va! OK! Fine! OK! Ça va, oui, merci. OK, yes, thank you.
