1 North arolina Testing Program NEXTEND2 EOG Grade 5 Reading Sample Items Watermelon Fever by Michelle. Pate I can t stop thinking about watermelons. Giant watermelons. Juicy watermelons. Wonderful watermelons. I ve saved my money to buy my own. One giant, juicy, wonderful watermelon all for me. Mom says I can t eat a whole chocolate cake by myself because it s bad for me and I ll get sick. ut a watermelon? It s fruit. It s good for me. I m gonna eat it all up, except for the seeds. Dad jokes that if I eat the seeds, a watermelon will grow inside my stomach. Maybe that wouldn t be so bad... Then my stomach would be happy all the time! t the store I look for the biggest, the juiciest, the most wonderful one I can find. nd there it is, right behind some cantaloupes. I move the cantaloupes. They re small and light, not like my giant, juicy, wonderful watermelon. Er... oomph. I pick up my watermelon and put it on the floor. I roll it down the aisle. Hey, kid! a grocery clerk calls out. What are you doing? I m rolling my giant, juicy, wonderful watermelon to the checkout line, I tell him. He walks toward me. re you going to pay for it? Of course, I say. I roll my treasure to the checkout line. The grocery clerk lifts my watermelon for the cashier to weigh. Fifteen pounds! fter I pay, the clerk sets it back on the floor for me. I roll it out the door, then along the sidewalk, three blocks to my house. Sweat drips from my forehead onto the watermelon. I roll it into the kitchen. Lucy! What are you doing with that watermelon? Mom asks. I saved up my money and bought it at the grocery store. I m going to eat it all by myself. Mom frowns. You ll get sick, she warns. No, I won t. It s fruit. It s good for me, I tell her. Please? I beg. I ve been saving for it. Mom thinks about it, then smiles as if she knows something. OK, but only if you eat it outside, she says. I roll my giant, juicy, wonderful watermelon out the back door to our picnic table. Mom brings out a knife and some paper plates. My sister follows her. Ooh, watermelon, she says. I want some. Sorry, I tell her. I m gonna eat it all by myself. Mom! she whines. Your sister saved her money and bought it herself. She decides what to do with it. My brother comes out next. Oh yum, watermelon, he says. an I have some? No way, I tell him. I m gonna eat it all by myself. Mom! my brother howls. It s your sister s watermelon. She decides. You can t eat that all by yourself, he challenges. Yes, I can! Page 1
2 North arolina Testing Program NEXTEND2 EOG Grade 5 Reading Sample Items Mom cuts the watermelon into four pieces, then cuts each of those in half. Eight pieces total. I reach for my first piece and take a bite. Red juice runs down my chin. My father comes out. Oh, watermelon! he says, seeing it. Don t even ask, says my brother. She won t share, my sister adds. The four of them stand together around the picnic table, watching me. I eat my second piece. My hands feel sticky, and my face feels wet all over. My belly starts to feel full, but the watermelon tastes so good I just can t stop eating it. I bite into my third piece. s I eat, the little mound of black seeds on my plate grows higher. Five and a half more pieces to go. Red juice dribbles from my chin to my shirt. I glance up at my family. My sister s mouth is watering. My brother s eyes are locked on the biggest slice left. My parents are watching me in amazement. I suddenly feel greedy. I m the only one having fun. Go ahead, I say. Have a piece. Mom smiles. I guess she knew all along that I d share. For a second they hesitate, looking at one another to be sure. Then they storm the picnic table, each grabbing a piece of giant, juicy, wonderful watermelon. We eat together. Now my whole family has watermelon-red chins, sticky hands, and black seeds piled in front of them. nd best of all, everyone is happy. I decide that giant, juicy, wonderful watermelons are the best.... nd the only thing better than eating one yourself is sharing it! Page 2
