Scope and Content Note The Mary Baker Eddy Autographed and Inscribed Books has no series and consists of 198 books and pamphlets, signed and inscribed by Mary Baker Eddy to her students and contemporaries. The books are cataloged at the item level, with numbers beginning with L that indicate Eddy s signature or writing. The bulk of the collection consists of Mary Baker Eddy s published writings, including ; ; and other works. Many of these books are signed compliments of the author or Author, instead of bearing Eddy s signature. Although the inscriptions in the books are short, they constitute examples of connections and working relationships Mary Baker Eddy had with the recipients. For example, she inscribed a copy of S to Mr. J. C. Derby With love from the Author Sep (L18308). She made this inscription in the year after Derby began to sell portraits of Eddy, and other photograph subjects connected with Christian Science. That was a few months after the opening of his Boston showroom on May 25, 1899, and before Eddy s endorsement of cross and crown jewelry on December 7, 1899 (SF- Photographs and photographers). Additionally, in 1903 and 1904 she sent two copies of the to the Editor of the (L18424, L18229), inscribed compliments of the author. The autographed and inscribed books in this collection are also examples of Eddy s generosity, especially to those individuals in her household. For example, Adam H. Dickey s reminiscence describes the first printing of and tells how Dickey received his copy inscribed by Eddy (L19105): When the little book of poems, in the white gold with the wild rose design, first appeared, it was privately printed by our Leader, and the copies were sent to Chestnut Hill. These were received as usual at the secretary s office, and I immediately carried in one of the books for our Leader to see. At once she asked me to read something from it. I opened to the poem called Constancy, and read this. When I had finished reading, I looked up and saw that tears were streaming down her cheeks. Mr. Dickey, She said feelingly, that was

Then she autographed the first copy, numbering it 1, and gave it to me. The presentation edition was a run of 100 copies. Dickey and Allison V. Stewart, then publisher of Eddy s writings, assisted with the publication, consisting of Eddy s poetry. Many of the books are inscribed to other household staff members, especially Laura Sargent (10 books), Irving C. Tomlinson (8 books), and Minnie Weygandt (8 books). Some of the inscribed books reference specific activities in Eddy s household. For example, early references to watches in which household members participated in assigned periods of prayer are found in two copies of that she inscribed to The Watchers in These copies were given to James A. Neal and Thomas W. Hatten (L18303 and L18304). This collection also shows connections to family members. Mary Baker Eddy inscribed a pamphlet, (L19078), and a copy of (L18416), to her cousin Henry M. Baker ( ). Their correspondence is found in the Mary Baker Eddy Collection and spans the years from 1893 to During this time, Baker served in the United States House of Representatives and Senate. Eddy inscribed three books to her son, George Washington Glover ( ), and to her eldest granddaughter, Mary B. G. Billings ( ). These books are found in the Glover and Billings Family Collection, and Eddy s are assigned L numbers in this collection. She inscribed (L19062) to her son, and (L19060) and (L19061) to her granddaughter. The given to Mary B. G. Billings was a Christmas present From Grandmamma Mary B. G. Eddy. Many other books in the collection were Christmas presents, including (L19055). In 1884 Eddy gave the book to Mary Harris Curtis, one of her students, for Christmas. It contains illustrations by A. J. Healy, is trimmed with fringe, and is bound with a tasseled rope. The Last Rose of Summer was a popular poem by Irish poet Thomas Moore. Set to music, it appears in another inscribed book, (L19031), inscribed to Ella S. Rathvon in Eddy gave the book first published in 1893 to Ebenezer J. Foster (L18212) and James Landy (L18213) for Christmas and to Elizabeth Kinter (L18215) for Easter. Arthur T. Buswell, another student, received (L19021) for Christmas 1883, during his first year as treasurer for the Massachusetts Metaphysical College., and (L18222, L18223, L18224, L18263, L18381, L18841, L19025, L18158) were also Christmas gifts. The longest inscription in the collection includes a verse inscribed to William H. Bertram in (L18275): "To Wm. H. Bertram M. D. Yes, the Christmas bells are ringing, Still their music soft and low, of the bygone yet it is singing Sweetly out above the snow. Dec " was first published in 1891, along with the 50th edition of. Minerva R. Adams, mother of Victoria and Laura Sargent, received an inscribed copy of the 50th edition, in which Eddy wrote this: Mrs. Minerva R. Adams The mother of my dear students, Victoria & Laura With love of The Author Jan. 24, 1891" (L18431). The following month, she sent a copy to Laura Sargent (L18432). Thirteen books consist of Mary Baker Eddy s calling cards, or her signature on cut paper pasted in a book. In many cases it is not known whether the calling card was given with the book or if the recipients brought them together as a sentiment. Many have unidentified recipients. The collection also includes inscribed pamphlets. These include (published by that name in 1893 and titled until 1891). Other pamphlets include (L19057, L19058, L19059, L19064, L19065, L19066, L19077), Church of Christ, Scientist, or Mother Church, Boston, June 15, 1902 (L19078, L19076, L19075), and others.
