3 History The National Repository Library (NRL) was founded 25 years ago. It was originally meant to be an institution to solve collection space problems in Finnish university libraries. The NRL was seen as the most economic way of storing library materials. Because of the NRL, the need for extra shelf space in libraries throughout the country would be decreased and could be controlled. Libraries sent to NRL less used materials.

4 Background The national Repository Library was established to Kuopio in 1989 to solve collection space problems in university libraries "Preserving printed material is part of the national collection policy. Repository to be shared by all libraries in Finland as the most economical way of storing library material

5 Mission the need for extra shelf space in libraries throughout the country is decreased and can be controlled. the basic function of the NRL is to receive, store and offer material for the use of other libraries. The NRL serves university and special libraries as well as public libraries, and acts as a connecting link in the library network. with regard to older printed material, the NRL is a considerable resource it preserves more than 20 percent of all material acquired by academic libraries in Finland. Finland is the first country to have a repository for academic and public libraries alike.

6 Collections NRL received, processed and stored all material sent from libraries. The collection grew about 4 kilometers a year. Now after 25 years there are about 90 kilometres of books and periodicals. The use of these resources was growing for a long time. Now the use is stabilized up to requests or renewals a year. In an analysis only 7 % of the book collections have been used during last ten years.

8 Problems All libraries seem to agree that in digital environment NRL s collections are a vital resource. the use is very low the amount of transferred materials is too big for NRL s resources.
