Ruled and titled in gilt. Attractive bookplate front pastedown, slight soiling to the cloth, a near fine copy, with considerable tanning to the margins of some of the plates. # $1,500 DICKENS, Charles. Master Humphrey's Clock. London: Chapman and Hall First edition. Three volumes. Bound in 19th Century diced calf, each volume very neatly rebacked. Ruled and titled in gilt. A couple of modest stains to the boards, a little rubbing at the spine, an attractive, very good or better set. Contains *The Old Curiousity Shop* and *Barnaby Rudge*. # $1000 (DICKENS, Charles). Two-page Third Person Letter from Charles Dickens, probably written in the hand of his traveling secretary George Putnam. : Octavo. Folded for mailing. Very good or better. A letter written 8 March 1842 from the United States Hotel in Philadelphia to Mr. Joseph Jones, declining an invitation from the Committee of that city's Hibernian Society, during Dickens's first trip to America. Dickens stayed at the United States Hotel from March 5th through 9th, during which time he met twice in his rooms with Edgar Allan Poe, who was seeking help from Dickens in finding an English publisher. # $950

London: Bradbury & Evans A fine, complete set of the Christmas books, beautifully bound by Bayntun. *A Christmas Carol* with first edition title page but corrected text; first edition, first issue of *The Chimes*; first edition of *The Cricket on the Hearth*; first edition, fourth issue of the vignette title page of *The Battle of Life*; first edition of *The Haunted Man*. All works with original illustrations, including four full-color plates in *A Christmas Carol*. Each volume has been uniformly bound in three-quarter, gilt-ruled morocco with gilt-decorated spines, raised bands, marbled boards and endpapers and all edges gilt. A lovely set, housed in a custom, half morocco gilt clamshell box. # $11,250 DICKENS, Charles. A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas. New York: Harper & Brothers Second American edition, later impression (preface on verso of titlepage). Printed green wrappers, [1-4], [5]-32. Includes the leaf of ads. Chip on the rear wrap, affecting no text (present and laid in), small chips and tears at the extremities, a very good copy. An unauthorized edition following the Philadelphia edition published the same year. Fragile and very scarce. # $950 DICKENS, Charles. The Life and Adventures of Martin Chuzzlewit. London: Chapman and Hall First edition, second state with the frontispiece engraving corrected. Bound by Nelson of Glasgow in half green morocco and green cloth. Ruled and titled, and all edges gilt. Spine slightly darkened, else a sound, near fine copy with clean plates with just the slightest of tanning. # $1000

Bookplate front pastedown, lacking the top one inch of the spine, not affecting any text, light soiling to spine and along edges of boards. This is the fourth state with the frontispiece vignette including an angel holding the banner and no publisher's information. # $250

Very good despite the following flaws: owner's bookplate on front pastedown (also a bookplate removed from front fly verso leaving a glue stain), owner's name on preliminary pages, pages foxed, very light water line on title page edges, cover modestly edgeworn. # $800

Cuttle"s hook is on his left arm; p. xv, no page entry for the frontispiece and vignette, and no quotation marks around "the Party" line 2; p. 14, ten lines up, "aint" has no apostrophe; p. 26, line 11 has "fidgetty"; on p. 40, "shewed" and "shew" instead of "showed" and "show"; p. 284, fifth and sixth lines from the bottom, "Delight" instead of "Joy"; "Capatin" instead of "Captain" last line p. 324; p. 582, the last line has no end period. Thick octavo. Forty illustrations (including frontispiece and title-page vignette) by Browne ("Phiz"). three-quarter calf and marbled papercovered boards. Two neat owner names on the front fly, general rubbing and wear to the boards, a tidemark in the upper margin of the last half of the pages, a bit of foxing to the text, a near very good copy of these selections from *Household Words.* # $150 DICKENS, Charles. First American edition of each volume (conforming to *Gimbel A129* with 1853 on titlepage of Volume One, and the correct publisher's addresses for each volume). Two volumes. Uniform publisher's blind-stamped red cloth, titled and decorated on the spine in gilt. Boards a trifle soiled, corners slightly bumped, slight foxing to prelims, still a beautiful and fresh, fine set. Very scarce, especially in this condition. # $1,500 DICKENS, Charles. Little Dorrit. London: Bradbury and Evans First edition, first issue (with the errata slip in Vol. XVI, "Rigaud" for "Blandois" in part 15, pp. 469, 470, 472 and 473, and all advertisements except lacking one page of the Dr. De Jongh ad in Vol. XVIII). A Triptych of Three Illustrations Copied from Phiz. : Three very nice pen-and-ink drawings by an amateur artist. Each is 7 7/8" x 10", and each is on backing board of roughly equivilent sizes. Copied from the etchings "Mrs. Bardeau Faints in Mr. Pickwick's Arms" (a new etching for the second edition of the *Pickwick Papers*); "My Magnificent Order at the Public House" (from *The Personal History of David Copperfield*); and "The Eyes of Mrs. Chick Are Opened to Lucretia Tox" (from *Dombey and Son*); all originally created by Phiz for Charles Dickens. Each is signed "C.C. G." with the date in Images a bit tanned, light, scattered foxing, edges chipped, the second image has large loss at lower left corner of board and third has loss at upper left corner, neither effecting the images, all have glue residue along top of boards that does not affect the images, some minor soiling to all, very good. # $175 (Literary Biography) WARD, H. Eva Humphries was not Woollcott's aunt, but rather the best friend of his mother. Her husband took an avuncular interest in the young Woollcott, paying for his schooling, and keeping Woollcott's erstwhile father reasonably well employed. An excellent association. # $150
