1 A C T I V I T Y B O O K L E T For Incoming 3e International Section

2 We hope you have a great summer holiday and are as excited as we are for next year. This course will start to prepare you for the work you ll encounter in 2nde in the International Section. You will need to purchase your own copy of a few books we will study during the year. This list of books you need to purchase is on the purchasing list. Of the books we will study this year, you will ONLY READ Shakespeare s Romeo and Juliet over the summer. Summer Reading Tasks During the summer, you are to read at least two books and complete two related activities. Both tasks are due on the first day of class. Both tasks are due on the first day of class and must be completed regularly during the summer. The objective is to keep on using the language!

3 1.) Read Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare and keep a reading journal before, during and after reading. Feel free to underline or highlight any lines you find interesting or that you d like to discuss during the year in your personal copy. Reading journal entry requirements: minimum of 4 journal entries each entry must be a minimum of half a typed page, double spaced, in font size 12. For every entry, record the act and scene of the play. Adopt a personal voice in responding to the text as you read. Record your impressions and how they change. Make personal connections and be aware of what emotions Shakespeare evokes in you. Comment on favorite passages and generally enjoy the writing process. Be sure to edit for spelling and grammar. 2.) Choose a book from the SUGGESTED BOOK LIST provided below and complete one task from the list below on your chosen book: a) Write a 5 paragraph typed book report (must include setting, main characters, plot, theme(s) and personal opinion. Try to use the P.E.A. format you learned a bit about if you can. Remember to edit for spelling and grammar. b) Create a new ending for the book (minimum of one typed page) c) Compose an original song for a theme of the book d) Create a diorama (shoe box presentation) to show the setting of the story e) Create an attractive poster advertising the book

4 f) Create a book trailer on imovie or windows Movie Maker g) Create a comic strip of the climax scene of the story (at least six frames, each with a caption) h) Create a new book cover for the book with a short paragraph explaining your design. i) Record yourself reading your favorite part of the book and discuss/analyze why it is significant. j) Prepare an interesting ppt. presentation with pictures and text on the author k) Write two diary entries from the main character s point of view (one page each)
