[Macmillan], Christmas, 1893, 8vo. leaf printed on one side only, slightly discoloured towards the edges, 2 short marginal tears in fore-margin, tiny hole in upper margin, preserved in a cloth fold-over case in a green morocco backed slip-in case, good (Lewis Carroll Handbook, rev. Crutch, 249) 175 Ever fastidious in the quality of the production of his books, Dodgson was deeply annoyed to find that in the 60th thousand of Through the Looking-Glass most of the pictures have failed so much, in the printing, as to make the book not worth buying. He begs purchasers to return them for exchange, and the defective copies would be given away to Mechanics Institutes and the like. Copies were inserted in most, if not all, copies of Sylvie and Bruno Concluded, which was still available new in Although that fact betokens a largish number, in the nature of things such an ephemeral piece is not destined to survive abundantly. The rather luxurious casing (?c. 1950) of this copy clearly shows that some book collector (or bookseller) had a high estimation of it a while back: it is scarce. 52. Carroll (Lewis) Eight or Nine Wise Words about Letter-Writing. [With:] The Wonderland Postage-Stamp Case. [First issue.] Oxford: Emberlin and Son, 1890, FIRST EDITIONS, PRESENTATION COPIES, Wise Words inscribed on the first page to Mabel Burton from the Author, July 10, 1890, the stamp case inscribed inside M.B. from C.L.D. Ap , pp. 40, [4], 24mo, Wise Words stitched as issued, lightly spotted and with slight wear to spine ends, the stamp case lightly foxed and with the outer colour-printed cotton-lined paper sleeve, very good (Williams 60 & 61; Williams, Madan, Green & Crutch & 223.1) 3,000 A small but excellent work, full of sound sense and humour... the Wise Words are connected with, and in some sense an advertisement of a Wonderland Stamp Case (Williams et al.). The first rule explains the use of stamp-cases, which were Dodgson s own invention. The case and booklet were intended to be sold together but evidently the case saw an initial separate issue, perhaps as a test - this copy is from that rare first issue which omits the publisher s imprint. A copy of this first issue survives that was presented to Carroll s sister in March 1890, while the earliest presentation copy of Wise Words is June 18th of that year, and the earliest presentation of both (with the second issue of the stamp case and now including a pink envelope to hold both) is 31st July. Dodgson sent inscribed copies of the stamp case to both Burton sisters on the 4th of April, and he followed these with inscribed copies of Wise Words on 10th July, so these sets naturally lack the later envelope and contain the earliest issues of both parts. Mabel s Wise Words and Florence s stamp case were sold at auction in 2004, with their corresponding partners only appearing on the market seven years later; Mabel s set, offered here, has now been reunited. 6

7 53. Carroll (Lewis) Eight or Nine Wise Words about Letter-Writing. Oxford: Emberlin and Son, 1890, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed on the first page to Florence Burton from the Author, July 10, 1890 pp. 40, [4], 24mo, stitched as issued, a touch spotted, very good 900 A small but excellent work, full of sound sense and humour (Williams et al.) Florence Burton was the sister of Carroll s young friend Mabel Burton and, although substantially older (by 13 years), she also corresponded with him regularly, acting as a go-between when Carroll upset Mabel or wished to arrange a meeting. 54. Carroll (Lewis) The Hunting of the Snark. An Agony in Eight Fits. With Nine Illustrations by Henry Holiday. Macmillan, 1876, FIRST EDITION, the illustrations all full-page and the majority with tissue-guards present, one or two light handling marks, pp. xiv, 83, [1], crown 8vo, original buff cloth with pictorial blocking and lettering in black, backstrip lettered in black with tips softened and a tiny spot of wear to lower joint, slight lean to spine, cloth a little dulled overall, a.e.g., black endpapers with bookplate tipped in to flyleaf, good (Williams-MadanGreen-Crutch 115) 350 A presentation copy, inscribed by the author For Nina 55. Carroll (Lewis) The Nursery Alice. Containing twenty coloured enlargements from Tenniel s illustrations to Alice s Adventures in Wonderland, with text adapted to Nursery Readers. The cover designed and coloured by E. Gertrude Thomson. Macmillan, 1890, PRESENTATION COPY, SECOND (FIRST PUBLISHED) EDITION, first issue, 20 colour illustrations, a little light finger-soiling in places, pp. [xii], 56, [8], 4to, original cloth-backed pictorial glazed paper boards, atouch of professional repair to backstrip, light scratching and soiling overall, corners worn, good (Williams et al.[crutch] 216) 10,000 The author has inscribed (in characteristic purple ink) to the half-title, For Nina, from the Author. Mar. 25, As with the original Alice in Wonderland, the first set of sheets Macmillan printed of this adapted edition for children were rejected, and a number of them later found their way to America with a new title page. After an adjustment of the colouring and a second print run, which Carroll approved (calling the sheets a great success ), it was published around Easter 1890, with 100 presentation copies - of which this is one - being inscribed on March 25th. 56. Causley (Charles) Jack the Treacle Eater. Macmillan. 1987, FIRST EDITION, illustrations by Charles Keeping throughout, the majority coloured and a number full-page, pp. 96, sm.folio, original mid brown boards, backstrip gilt lettered, dustjacket, fine 30 Pinocchio 57. Collodi (C., pseud. for Carlo Lorenzini) The Story of a Puppet, or The Adventures of Pinocchio. Translated from the Italian by M[ary] A[lice] Murray. Illustrated by C. (sic) Mazzanti. T. Fisher Unwin, 1892, FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, title and half-title printed in red and black, numerous illustrations in the text, small splash mark on the frontispiece, one leaf dog-eared, the textblock strained at one point, pp. [viii, including initial blank and frontispiece], 232, small 8vo, original patterned cloth printed in blue, patterned endpapers and edges to match, slightly skewed, the spine a trifle darkened and likewise a narrow strip near at the fore-edge of the upper board and a small patch on the lower, the corners minimally worn, with a Christmas 1891 presentation inscription on the verso of the front flyleaf, very good 4,000 The first half of Pinocchio was originally published serially in the children s magazine Giornale per i Bambini from 1881 to 1883, though initially it did not have a happy ending - Pinocchio was hanged. But his publisher persuaded Collodi (a pseudonym for Carlo Lorenzini) to add a second half, in which The Blue Fairy repeatedly comes to Pinocchio s rescue, guiding him toward self-awareness and enabling his transformation from puppet to human. Popular in Italy at the time of its publication, the book and its author went on to gain international acclaim when the story was translated into English in 1892, after the author s death. Almost nothing else in children's literature equals Pinocchio for wildness of invention (Oxford Companion to Children's Literature, which also animadverts on the story s gradual emasculation, blaming especially the Disney version). This book is very hard to find in really good condition. Though dated 1892, the book was published for the Christmas market in 1891, and an inscription, such as the one here, is not unheard of. The illustrator s first name was in fact Enrico: how the error of his initial in the title-page occurred is not known, nor is it often remarked upon. 7

Stevenson has here recaptured not only a part, but the whole of that hidden life, and has set those recollections forth in just the terms that children would use, could they put them into words at all (Meigs, pp ). Furthermore, they were the first sizable group of poems to... capture, with equal consistency and thoroughness, a child s quality of imagination, sense of wonder, and intense enjoyment of experience (p. 408) Stevenson (Robert Louis) A Child s Garden of Verses.
