News of Ross's safe re-turn reached Back in April 1833 and he then pursued the expedition's secondary objectives. These were, firstly, to navigate the length of a river supposedly arising in the neighbourhood of the Great Slave Lake and running north to the Arctic Sea, and then, secondly, to map as much as possible of the seacoast. He was successful in both objectives, travelling 7,500 miles in total and travers-ing the full 440-mile length of the river (known as Thlueetessy' by the Indians). The Great Fish River, as Back named it, has since become known as The Back River.

5 Sir James Lamont s Copy 3. BENT, Silas. He cites information given him by whalers of the seas north and east of Bering Strait. In each the open channels created by the two currents are highlighted. Sir James Lamont s copy, with the signature and address on the front free fly. Gebrüder Hoffmann, to, 27.5cm, first edition, 3 volumes in one, xviii,[iii],168 & 176 & [i],240,[i]pp., with 6 engraved maps, (5 folding) & 18 (of 19) hand-coloured aquatint plates from drawings by Choris, Eschscholtz and others, (3 double-page; one double page wanting - includes 11 plates of butterflies) & 1 black and white plate), in the original boards with the orig. paper label, rebacked, uncut, fine condition 9, A.B. 9189; Hill 943, Lada Mocarski 80, Sabin Streeter VI Cowan p334. Howes K-258; Forbes I, 525.

34 Kotzebue's important second Russian circumnavigation to explore for a northwest passage is a cornerstone work of Pacific exploration with important descriptions of Hawaii, California and Alaska. He had earlier sailed with Captain Kruzenshtem in the first Russian circumnavigation, Leaving Kronstadt in 1815, the Rurik rounded Cape Hom and visited Chile, Easter Island, and the Marshall Islands. He explored Hawaii, and the North American coast including Alaska where he discovered the sound that now bears his name. Failing to find a northwest passage from the Pacific to the Atlantic Oceans, he was forced to turn south where he visited the Marshall Islands, the Marianas, and several other groups of Islands on his return to Europe. His description of the northwest coast of America is a important contribution. The second volume contains a description of California and the earliest scientific account of the Golden Poppy, California's state flower. In California Kotzebue also picked up Vassilii Petrovich Tarakanov (q.v.), a Russian hunter who had been captured by the Californians. Kotzebue's account of his ship's visit to San Francisco Bay in October of 1816 is accompanied by six plates. The third volume contains the important scientific report of naturalist Adelbert von Chamisso's Bemerkungen und Ansichten, on the voyage's results. It is noteable for his descriptions and remarks on the climate, flora, fauna, and peoples of California and the northwest coast of America. "The work is of great importance in the early exploration of Alaska. "Rich in early original source material on Alaska. Kotzebue belonged to that group of outstanding Russian naval officers of the first half of the nineteenth century, which included Kruzenshtern, Golovnin, Lisianskii, Sarychev, and others." (Lada-Mocarski). "It was on this voyage that Kotzebue discovered Kotzebue Sound in Alaska, thinking for a time as he sailed east that he had found the long sought north-east passage" (Streeter).

37 33. McCORMICK, R[obert]. Voyages of Discovery in the Arctic and Antarctic Seas, and Round The World: being personal narratives of attempts to reach The North And South Poles; and of an Open-Boat Expedition up the Wellington Channel in Search of Sir John Franklin and Her Majesty's Ships "Erebus" and "Terror", in Her Majesty's Boat "Forlorn Hope", under the command of the author, to which are added an Autobiography, Appendix, Portraits, Maps and numerous Illustrations, by Deputy Inspector-General R. M`Cormick. Chief Medical Officer, Naturalist, and Geologist to the Expeditions. London. Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington sm4to, 25.5cm, The First Edition, in two volumes, xx,432 & xii,412,16pp. (Publisher s Memorandum & Opinions of the Press) plus 37 tinted litho. plates (inc.5 folding, mainly views but including portraits) plus 5 tinted litho. maps (1 folding), plus 24 plates from engravings and 43 text illustrations from engravings, in the original full pictorial gilt and black stamped dark blue cloth, with arctic and antarctic porthole views on the upper covers, ex-library (withdrawn stamp) with gilt label on the spines, call labels over a decoration removed, else a fine bright set 3, A.B Spence 747. Taurus 10; Rosove 221.A1, first edition, pp (See below). - Of considerable Antarctic interest as well as Arctic. McCormick was with James Clark Ross' Antarctic expedition in Erebus' and Terror', and here gives the only first handpublished narrative of that expedition other than that of Ross. He had earlier been with Parry's fourth expedition toward the north pole, 1827, and was later with Belcher's Franklin search expedition, and gives a lengthy account of both. Only 750 sets were produced and apparently many were lost.

38 The large lithographed panoramas of the great ice barrier in the Ross Sea and the coastline of Victoria Land [McCormick] convey the sense of awed wonder experienced by all aboard Ross' ships when the true enormity of the Antarctic continent revealed itself for the first time" Comments first edition. McCormick served as the surgeon during Ross' Antarctic expedition and, although written many years later, his narrative of that remarkable expedition is an important source as it draws from his own diaries penned at the time. The work also covers his other polar expeditions: the first as the surgeon on Parry's 1827 attempt to reach the North Pole and the other on a Franklin search expedition under his own command. As publication was arranged and paid for by McCormick himself, only 750 sets were produced according to Rosove. He also identifies 7 variant issues, the present set being variant f. M'Cormick was 84 when these memories were published. It was received well by the press, but he has difficulty selling the volumes. Five years after publication he still possessed 375 of the 750 produced. Variants in these attractive cloth bindings indicate that binding work was done in batches. Had a remainders been issued there would have been a number of fine copies on the market over the years, when in fact the reverse has been the case and one can safely assume the unbound sheets were destroyed. Sets in leather bindings would have been from the publishers. Truly fine set would be extremely rare.

His investigations, although pursued at so early a period of Arctic exploration, were

40 remarkable for their accuracy; Sir John Franklin more than once expressed his surprise at being able to corroborate their correctness in his own explorations. Some Indian vocabularies are included. (Sabin). Mackenzie's journals recount his two expeditions undertaken on behalf of the North West Company in their attempt to break the Hudson's Bay Company's monopoly of the fur trade. The first expedition, in 1879, from Fort Chipewyan on Lake Athabaska down what is now known as the Mackenzie River to the Arctic constitutes the first trip to the Arctic from the Canadian Prairies. The second, in , from Fort Chipewyan over the Rocky Mountains by the Peace and Fraser Rivers to the Pacific, is distinguished as the first overland expedition to reach the Pacific, north of Mexico. The maps are the earliest of certain parts of Canada. Also included is a lengthy account of the development of the fur trade in the North West, generally attributed to the author's cousin, Roderick Mackenzie

Meares commanded the Felice Adventurer and Iphigenia, Captain Douglas, on a trading voyage for the Associated Merchants. The seizure of his ships by the Spanish at Nootka led to an international crisis, eventually resolved by the Nootka Convention of His exaggerated claims concerning his exploits and hardships were strongly attacked by George Dixon. The account of voyages was edited by William Combe from Mearer's papers, ref. D.N.B. The appendices contain the official instructions for the voyage, and various documents concerning the seizure, including Meares's Memorial to the House of Commons which was also published separately. The British based their claim to Oregon in large measure on Meares' voyage to and exploration of the Northwest Coast. cf. Graff Howes M469. Lada-Mocarski 46, cf. Lande Sabin Smith Streeter 6:3491. 45 A.B Cook p239. The expedition was an attempt to reach the North Pole by way of Smith Sound and Robeson Channel and to explore the northern parts of Ellesmere Island as well as Northwest Greenland. An outbreak of scurvy prevented the sledging parties from completing their work. The two ships wintered, one at Lady Franklin Bay, the other at Lincoln Bay. Albert Markham reached the then farthest North at 82o 2o', under extreme hardship. This was the first major British Arctic expedition since the Franklin search expeditions in the early 1850's. It also marked the end of the large, rigid British naval polar expeditions.
