1 FRONT COVER LISTEN TO AUDIOBOOKS ON YOUR FAMILY ROAD TRIP! This booklet contains recommendations that will make the time it takes to reach your destination entertaining and educational.
2 PAGE 1 GLOVE BOX ACTIVITES Do you have a road trip coming up? Wondering how your family will occupy the time in the car? These car-friendly activities are guaranteed to make reaching your destination a lot more fun. All you need is an audiobook, your family, and the road! Listen For Clues Have you just listened to a part of the story that has left you guessing what s next? Pause the audiobook and have everyone predict what will happen. Then play the next part to see who guessed correctly. I Spy A trip is never dull with the classic I Spy game After listening to an audiobook, everyone can I spy using different elements from the story: characters, places, animals, or words. Whoever spies the most things wins, and then gets to choose the next audiobook. In-Car Casting Call You just finished listening to an audiobook. Now the kids can mimic the voices of the characters they heard. Everyone can play a different character and reenact their favorite scenes. Kids can act out their favorites while the family guesses who they are imitating.
3 PAGE 2 GLOVE BOX ACTIVITES Create the Sequel After listening to an audiobook, make up another chapter or invent a new ending. Assign everyone in the car a role. Be silly. Be creative. Be a storyteller. And, have fun. Color/Draw While You Listen Listening to an audiobook leaves your hands free for creativity while enjoying a great story. Ask budding artists to draw as they listen; they can illustrate favorite details and scenes that stand out in their minds. Periodically pause the audiobook to allow them to share their drawings. Family Discussion Listening to a story together creates a shared bond. After you ve finished a section or an entire audiobook take turns discussing your thoughts and feelings and share stories from your own experiences. How Well Did You Listen? Encourage active listening by asking a round of questions after the audiobook ends. Who can remember the most about the story? The child with the most correct answers can pick where the family stops to eat next or wins a fun prize. ACTIVITIES FOR ALL AGES

6 Why is listening so important? Listening plays a vital role in communication; in fact, it is the first language skill to be acquired. 1 It is a highly complex, interactive process by which spoken language is converted to meaning in the mind. Experiencing a well-told story is satisfying on many levels. Traditional reading of print can be both difficult and unsatisfying for some readers. Audiobooks provide a favorable option while promoting literacy by focusing on the art of listening. As librarians Sharon Grover and Liz Hannegan state, audiobooks, can be one avenue to reach these reluctant or struggling readers, as well as their proficient peers. 2 DID YOU KNOW? 85% of learning derives from listening. 3 30% of people are auditory learners. 4 And, Listening Skills can improve with practice! Dr. Rose Brock, Assistant Professor at Sam Houston State University and Audiobook Expert Audiobooks Develop Listening and Literacy Skills in the Following Ways: Listening skills help expand attention spans 5 Motivate, keep listeners interest, and win over reluctant readers Expose listeners to a variety of genres; meet individual interests Expose learners to new vocabulary Develop correct pronunciation of English, dialects, and non-english words Provide good reading role models with appropriate phrasing, intonation, and articulation Encourage higher level critical thinking, interpretation, and imagination Create a personal connection and a sense of intimacy Given the proven power of audiobooks and their role in the larger literacy landscape audiobooks make the perfect companion for families taking a summertime roadtrip. Tuning in together offers families a shared platform for discussion. 1 Wolvin, Andrew D. and G. Carolyn Coakley Listening Education in the 21st century. International Journal of Listening.
