1 BookSpring will provide: Book Swap Planning Kit Table Signs Surplus gently used books (as available) Volunteer coordination Book Swap! Goal: To encourage children to think critically about the books that they own and to learn about the concepts of book swapping and sharing. Book Swap Timeline: 6 months ahead: Schedule your Book Swap with RIF. Decide if you will hold the Book Swap during the day, or with an event such as literacy night. Select a theme: Thanksgiving, Earth Day, Summer Reading, Everyone s Birthday...or tie in to an activity or theme already present on your campus. 4 months ahead: Request book donations from teachers, parents and local businesses (optional.) 1/2 Price Books, retired teachers and RIF volunteers are good sources. 2 months ahead: Give teachers and parents a heads up by asking them to Save the Date for the Book Swap. Present the Book Swap concept at a faculty meeting or via . 1 month ahead: Prepare flyers and book bucks. Decide how you will organize your tables and books. All materials are available in the RIF Coordinator section at Determine your schedule for the Book Swap. Send your schedule to BookSpring if you will be requesting volunteers. 2 weeks ahead: Recruit and train Book Swap Helpers. Distribute flyers to teachers. 1 week ahead: Supervise collection of books. Encourage older students to bring in picture books they are too old for. Answer any questions that come up from teachers or students. Make morning announcements or publicize the Book Swap as students come through the library. Day prior: Day of: Day after: Special thanks to McBee and St. Elmo Elementary librarians Amy McFadden and Heather Stephens for their inspiration and help in the development of this kit! Have Book Swap Helpers bring boxes of books to the library and sort books. (Picture Books/Chapter Books/Non Fiction) (English/Spanish) Collect Classroom tracking sheets from teachers. Distribute Book Bucks to teachers. Have bucks ready in stacks of 25 to make this easier. Receive boxes of surplus books from BookSpring. Set up tables and table signs. Organize tracking sheets. Prepare extra Book Bucks for children who may not have one. Assign volunteers to a table to help out. Have a make up time for students who were absent if you held your event in the evening. Box up the books. Relax!

2 Suggested Read-Alouds for Book Swap Day (*optional) Grade Level: Pre-Kinder through First Grade Suggested Read-Aloud: Maybe A Bear Ate It! By: Robie Harris Discussion Points: 1. This little monster is VERY attached to his book! You can use this story to start discussion about the specialness of books and the importance of treating them kindly. 2. Imagination is a central part of this story. Can the children imagine where the books in the book swap might have been before? Maybe they were in a giant s cave, or they might have belonged to a giraffe on the savannah. 3. Bedtime routines that include reading are great! What bedtime routines do the students have to share? 4. Everybody likes different kinds of books. Talk with the students about what makes the best book for them. Is it funny? Is it scary? Do you like the characters, or is it the pictures that make a book special? Grade Level: Second through Fifth Grade Suggested Read-Aloud: Classic Fairy Tales Told by: Berlie Doherty (or any story compilation) Discussion Points: 1. A Book Swap is all about sharing stories. Use this opportunity to talk about the best book or story you ever read. Allow the students to do the same. 2. Introduce the Classic Fairy Tale book by talking about the oral tradition of storytelling. Here are some guiding questions. 3. Can you imagine a world with no books at all? 4. How would you share a story with your friend if there were no books? 5. How would you share a story with them if they couldn t read? 6. Allow the students to share their ideas. 7. Choose your favorite fairy tale from the book to share with the students. You can read directly from the book, or you may want to share the story as it was told to you as a child. 8. Talk about the words retold by. What do those words mean? Is it still a good story, even though the author didn't make it up themselves? 9. Swap your books and enjoy some new to you stories!

3 Dear Fabulous Teachers, Mark you calendars! We will be having a Book Swap on. Here s what you need to know: Week before the Book Swap: 1. Students can bring gently used paperback books to their classrooms. 2. Please make sure the books are in good condition. Books with minor wear are acceptable. Books with major damage such as torn or missing pages, writing or scribbling, water or food damage will not be accepted for trade th grade, please assign 1 or 2 students to be your Book Swap Helpers. PK,K and 1st, please work with a 5th grade teacher to recruit a Book Swap Helper for your class. I will hold a brief training for all Book Swap Helpers in the library on at. Book Swap helpers can check the books to make sure they are acceptable and mark the tracking sheet. They will also help to transport all the collected books to the library. 4. Students can bring up to 5 books to swap. Please give students one book buck for very book they turn in. Students may bring more than 5 books to DONATE to the Book Swap if they wish, but 5 book bucks is the maximum. You can use the attached tracking sheet to monitor the books turned in. 5. Please help explain and publicize this activity to all your students. Attached is a flyer for you to send home and/or hang in your room. Remind students that this is an optional activity. They do not have to bring books to trade. 6. Please remind students that they must bring their book buck(s) with them to the Book Swap to get a new book. No book buck, no book! At the Book Swap: 1. During your scheduled time for the book swap, please bring you entire class. (Students who did not bring a book to trade will be given one book buck. This should be a surprise. Each child will receive at least one new book.) ***If you, teachers, have children s books you would like to swap, you can participate too! We also welcome donations, especially Spanish books and easy readers. The more variety of books we have, the better. ***
