Affiches Américaines: Ch. Levy. Paris:10 rue Martel. (Ca 1895). Colored lithographic poster on paper. Mounted on silk. 22 ½ x 31" folds, chips to margins. Colors bright. The poster advertises a cabaret dancer who wore and waved colored silks in front on electric lights to create a diaphanous effect of movement in colors. This type of performance was pioneered by Loie Fuller but copied in cabarets at the time. The dancer is lost to time. Her name suggests the color changes of a chamaeleon and also evokes the theme of the Dumas story made into a play La Dame aux Camélias (1852). Rare. Only location is at Musée Carnavalet. These lithographs, based on the actual vehicles, record the fad for excessively decorated luxury carriages driven by the wealthy Parisian, in an era before the automobile. Less than a year after Napoleon was exiled to St. Helena, the Bourbons are back. Here, after 21 years in exile, Louis Philippe (Duke of Chartres, Duke of Orléans, and later King of the French; son of guillotined Louis Philippe Joseph, 5th Duke of Orléans, of the cadet branch of the Bourbon royal family), is back in Paris, recommending a brand of Eau de Cologne (Napoleon s favorite scent, coincidentally). One could drink this type of cologne with its alcohol content. Perhaps, that was a good thing during this confused time. Rudolph Nureyev s copy These lovely etchings picture graceful high-wire performers in full costume dancing on either two or four "cordes". In one print "Le Incomparable Ravel," a guitar player on the tight rope accompanies a couple dancing. The marvelous prints from Le Bon Genre provide a vivid picture of the social life entertainments of early 19th century Paris. The insult to Irish girls is followed here by the young men of Dublin kicking one of the officers of the 10th down the stairs, with comments by onlookers that include ridicule of the officers One says I suppose they ll have a meeting [fight] shortly; the other says Oh not at all the 10th don t fight. Another comments that the 10th do in fact dance, if falling down stairs can be considered dancing. Rare. If the English should learn one lesson: don t mess with Ireland This satirical print, which attacks the manners of young English officers, pictures two scenes, one entitled Ball Room, in which young officers lounge about and refuse to dance with young ladies from Dublin society. "Trot her out. Let us see her foine legs," one of the soldiers calls. The other scene, Drawing Room, shows two young ladies ridiculing the officer in the same manner. "No, Wont do! Trot him out!!" Contemporary brown cloth, decorative endpaper. Front hinge cracked. Twenty-four portraits of movie starts of the epoch printed in brown and fleshtoned pink through roto-gravure process. Some of the portraits were distributed with a subscription. This portfolio was for magazine promotion: Twenty four portraits include of early film actors: Alice Joyce; Carlyle Blackwell; Edith Storey; Crane Wilbur; Clara K. Young Francis X. Bushman; Lillian Walker; Earle Williams; Mary Pickford; William King Baggot (November 7, 1879 July 11, 1948) "The Most Photographed Man in the World" Motion Picture Magazine was founded by Vitagraph. Originally called The Motion Picture Story Magazine. in 1914, it was renamed Motion Picture Magazine. The magazine shifted to a focus on celebrities and attracted a larger female readership. In 1919, the circulation jumped from 248,845 to 400,000. In 1925 Vitagraph was sold to Warner Bros. Vitagraph's first office was in Lower Manhattan. They subsequently opened the first modern film studio in the US, built in 1906, at the corner of East 14th St and Locust Ave (near Avenue M) in the Midwood section of Brooklyn. They created a second film studio in Santa Monica, California in 1911, and a year later moved to a twenty-nine-acre sheep ranch on Prospect St. in Hollywood. Not located in OCLC $300 Page 15

In original illustrated wraps, nicely bound in red morocco with gilt lettering on front cover and marbled endpapers. Lightest of wear, else fine. With note in German from Herbert Beerbohm Tree and 7 tipped-in photos of Mr. Tree in various costume. Cast lists at rear for the several plays they performed, mostly Shakespeare. This souvenir program was published when Beerbohm Tree took his company to Berlin at the invitation of the German emperor, and gave a selection from his repertoire with great success. In the same year he established a school of dramatic art, for the training of actors in London. In this and other ways he was prominent in forwarding the interests of the stage.
