From Seconde Suite d'estampes pour servir a l'histoire des Modes et du Costume en France, dans le dix-huitieme siecle Original engraving on laid paper, nicely framed in gilt. Le Monument du Costume is a series of fine engravings which was created to record the glory of the late 18th century French nobility by depicting the polished manners, clothes and lavish surroundings of the Bourbon court. The original printings consisted of three series with a total of 36 engravings. The prints are rich with details of elegant couture. Amoroso Antonio Mercurio ( ). The $1,250 musician. 4 3 4 Bradbury, Ray. Our New Year's Eve. Typed manuscript, signed "Ray" and annotated in two places.1 page folio. 20 lines. Inscribed "Bruce! Hope this does it. Best to you and Ezter, Ray." Undated (ca. 1960). Probably written for a magazine article on how famous writers spend New Year's Eve. Bradbury writes on his long-standing habit of staying at home on New Year's Eve to commemorate his family. The statement ends "... And for me, personally, as midnight comes and goes, it is a time to remember my mother and father... Thus the living and the dead, in our house, share a special time." Bradbury manuscripts are rarely on the market. Provenance: from the editor of New Yorker who worked with Bradbury in the 1950s. $1,250 Byron, George Gordon Noel, Lord, Marino Faliero, Doge of Venice. 5 5 Corneille, Thomas [ ], translator; Ovid (43 B.C. 17 or 18 A.D.). Les metamorphoses d'ovide. Traduites en vers François par T. Corneille. Paris: Claude Barin, Original edition of the first two books of Ovid translated by Thomas Corneille. The full translation was not published until An elegant edition with beautiful typography and ornamentation. Thomas wrote with great facility. He is credited with perfecting the French language, as can be evidenced by this translation of Ovid (begun shortly after he left school), his notes to Claude Favre Vaugelas Remarques sur la langue Francais (1647), his compilation of a dictionary of arts and sciences for the Académie Française (1694), and his editorship of Mercure galant, with Donneau de Vise. The artist of the two engravings fronting the books is the son of Hermann Weyen (or Weyher), Laurent Weyen ( ), a Flemish engraver who died in Paris. Laurent also engraved illustrations for the works of Moliere. Page 5

Red cloth with gilt design and title. Spine crown and heel frayed edges worn. Very good. (text fine). These 32 beautiful theatrical designs, eleven in color, are the best contemporary record of the Craig version of the Ibsen's play. The Game of the Goose (Das Gansespiel (german), Gioco dell'oca (italian), Jeu de l'oie (french), Juego de la Oca (spanish), Ganzenbord (dutch), Gaspelet (swedish)) is thought to be the prototype for many of the commercial European racing board games of recent centuries. Soixante-Douze Planches is a beautiful collection of 72 collotype reproductions of Clara's drawings, gouaches, and pen sketches of Isadora. 9 Fagan pseud of Barthélemy-Christophe Fagan. Les Caracteres de Thalie.. Comédie en trois actes, avec un prologue et un divertissement. Paris, Prault fils, Year: 1737 A forgotten playwright who ought to be remembered Les Caracteres de Thalie consists of three one act plays, l Inquiet, l Etourderie, Les Originaux each with a different structure and theme, each played together to form a complete work. In his own time. Fagan was influential and celebrated even by Voltaire who thought Fagan s La Pupille, 1734, was the most complete petite pièce on the French stage. Page 7

Contes fantastiques is considered Villeboeuf s Surrealist masterpiece These extraordinary aquatints, bitten numerous times to achieve subtle variations of shade, take us on a phantasmagorical journey that owes much to the etchings of Goya, to whose art Villeboeuf was deeply attached Fuller, Loïe ( ). American dancer. Autographed letter, signed Loïe. [Paris, 1908]. Tall 8vo, 5 pages on three sheets, folded. In English. A dense, five-page letter to Mme Jules Clarétie, the wife of the important critic and writer Jules Clarétie, briefing her friend on wealthy guests who are coming to a soirée at the Clarétie home. Fuller writes with obvious affection for her friend, in language evocative of her very creativity, but with no love for the wealthy guests. Written at an important period in Fuller s life when she began work on her autobiography, encouraged by Jules Clarétie. At this time, she was also staging her balletpantomime La Tragédie de Salomé (1907). $2,500 Page 8

Presentation copy of the pre-original first edition of his play Le roi Candaule with an autograph inscription at the beginning of Acte I: Cette avant-premiére...est retrouvée fort heuresement... signed Andre Gide. Small 4to. Blue cloth lettered in gilt, marbled endpapers. A pre-original edition and pre-performance first edition, with added material $1, Gozzi, Carlo. Printsessa Turandot. Teatral'notragicheskaia kitaiskaia skazka v 5 aktakh [Princess Turandot. A dramatic tragic Chinese tale in 5 acts]. Moscow/St Petersburg, Gosudarstvennoe Izdatel'stvo, p., Folio. Includes music. With 2 full-page photographic portraits of Vakhtangov, 22 black-andwhite and 12 color full-page plates, with tissue guards, and many smaller illustrations in the text; showing photographs of the production and sketches for costumes and scenery by Nivinskii. His designs were based on commedia dell'arte models, although heavily infused with contructivism. Rebound in blue silk with original cover by Nivinskii mounted. Very good copy, frontispiece is a bit ragged, a few pages soiled and/or restored. $1,250 Page 9

Conservatorio di Musica di Mail Il Giorno 3 Aprile Milano: Tipografia Mussi, 1811 Libretto for the First Complete Performance in Italy of Haydn s Oratorio The Four Seasons 15 Heine, Heinrich. ( ).. Der Rabbi von Bacherach. mit Originallithographien von Max Liebermann. Berlin: Im Prophlaen Verlag, #279 of 400 with signed frontispiece and limitation page by Liebermann and 17 full or partial page lithographs in black. (The first 100 were printed on Japan Vellum). This unfinished story remains popular because it pictures life in the medieval Jewish community with detailed description of worship, customs, and pecking orders, as well as, dress, manners and a variety of activities within the Jewish quarter. Liebermann s realistic sketchbook style, depicts scenes with a charcoal drawing like simplicity. The stark flat depiction creates an atmosphere of dark foreboding. Page 10

This fine engraving, after a painting by John James Halls ( ), was done by by Charles Turner ( ), who was royal engraver to George III. Kean was at the height of his career in This portrait of Kean was often reproduced in smaller format. The original, large mezzotint is rare. London: John Van Voorst, With twelves plates, seven of which are based on As you Like it; another is a charming title page. Quarto. Original ribbed green cloth. Gilt title on upper cover & spine. Small nick to spine crown. A handsome copy. Martin's essay discusses the antecedents to Shakespeare's Seven Ages of Man. The illustrations are by William Mulready, C.R. Leslie, Sir Augustus Callcott, John Constable, Sir David Wilkie, William Collins, Alfred E. Chalon, Abraham Cooper, Edwin Landseer and William Hilton. Warmly inscribed by Marty to Monsieur [Moïse] Lévi de Benzion, de Benzion ( ) was an Egyptian department store owner who built an important collections of art and antiquities.. $1,450 Page 12

Full green polished morocco with gilt rules, raised bands. By the Club Bindery dated Seven etchings plus a lithograph of Mérimée after Deveria by Lalauze Damase Jouaust s Librairie des Bibliophiles series, inaugurated in 1869, featured new editions of Classic French texts with etchings reproducing illustrations by François Boucher and other eighteenth-century artists; this collection set the standard for refined limited editions until Jouaust s 1891 retirement. The composer Egidio Romualdo Duni (b Matera, Basilicata, bap. 11 Feb 1708; d Paris, 11 June 1775) was one of the most important opera comique composers in the third quarter of the 18th century, contributing to the creation of a new style in that genre, the comédie mêlée d ariettes. $ Pradon, (Jacques). Jacques Pradon was a facile, popular playwright, the most prolific of his period who, unfortunately, confused popularity with genius. Believing his talent equal to that of Racine s, he hurriedly put together a tragedy Phèdre et Hippolyte to compete with Racine s Phèdre then just being staged for the first time in early January As a result of this direct challenge to Racine, Pradon became embroiled in a verbal brawl among critic and supporters that cost him his budding reputation. $2,000 Page 14

Wrappers, slightly soiled, else fine. Printed by the presses of J.-Goossens, This is a rare example of the artdeco book in Belgium. The poetry and woodcuts are primarily on fashionable themes: Parfums, Le Collier, Jeunesse. The angular, black and white wood-engravings echo French art-deco styles. The artist, Emile Henry Tielemans, was a painter, engraver on wood, and jeweler, born in Louvain, Page 15

Inscribed by Valery on the front flyleaf. Total edition 205 copies: 30 specially printed on Van Gelder as this destined for particular subscriber with their names printed on the justification page. 175 regular copies. Previously published in 1927 for the Amis de Lucien Kra reportedly in 15 copies. Slim quarto. Contemporary binding of half morocco & marbled boards initialled A.S.H. at the bottom of the spine. Spine slightly worn and faded. Original gray wrappers bound in. Jean Royère (b.1871, d 1956) poet and critic was a disciple of Mallarme, He founded of an important post- Symbolist periodical La Phalange (1906). Royère published several collections of poetry, as well as collected essays and critic studies. Inscribed by Valéry to the French patriot Albert Sancholle Henraux (1881 or ) who was an art patron and active member of the French resistance during Nazi occupation. Henraux was reportedly given travel passes along with information gathered by members of the resistance to pass on to guerilla fighters. He risked his career, maybe even his life (Edsel).
