Although each of the enrichment guides can stand alone, including them in a final box adds to the overall appeal. This Enrichment Guide will describe how to take the characters presented, the setting and various riddles and clues from the other six enrichment guides and use them to form a foundation for a fictional mystery story. Suggestions for riddles, clues and how to hide them in a finished Polar expedition box is presented.
3 HOW TO CREATE A POLAR MYSTERY BOX This enrichment guide offers numerous ideas on how to create an underlying mystery mixed together with both real and imaginary characters, settings and events. Listed below is the process I would recommend you use in making The Polaris Chronicles - Polar Exploration - Create a Polar Mystery Box. 1. SELECT A BOX. See page 11 for suggestions. 2. PREPARE THE RIDDLE CARDS. Print out pages Information about the Riddle Cards can be found on pages Place the riddle cards into a special envelope and label RIDDLES. 3. PRINT OUT THE PAGE - What to discover - page 14. Pages explain the process to solve the riddles and how to find the clues. The clues will allow page 14 to be completed. 4. MAKE THE CLUES FOR EACH RIDDLE. Make the items where each of the clues will be hidden inside the box. RIDDLE 1 - CRYPTOGRAPHY BORDER - Pages RIDDLE 2 - LAYERED LETTER & REVERSE SCRIPT - Pages RIDDLE 3 - LAYERED MAPS - Pages RIDDLE 4 - LAYERED & REVOLVING - Pages RIDDLE 5 - REASSEMBLE - Page RIDDLE 6 - COMMON OBJECT DISGUISED - Page 30, 32 RIDDLE 7 - MICROSCRIPT - Page 33, 32 RIDDLE 8 - CRYPTOGRAPHY CODE STRIP - Page RIDDLE 9 - CREATE A FALSE BOTTOM - Pages RIDDLE 10 - DOT TO DOT - Pages i
4 HOW TO CREATE A POLAR MYSTERY BOX (Continued) 5. HIDE THE CLUES IN THE POLAR MYSTERY BOX & INCLUDE OTHER ITEMS MADE FROM THE POLARIS CHRONICLES - POLAR SERIES. See pages iii, for descriptions of the other enrichment guides. 6. WRAP THE BOX IN PLAIN BROWN WRAPPING PAPER & EMBELLISH THE OUTSIDE. Embellish the outside of the paper with the name & address to whom you want to receive the box. Add cancelled postage stamps, rubber stamps etc. to make it look interesting. 7. BOX DISCOVERED. Once the box is found by the person it is being delivered to, give them a copy of the What to Discover on page 14 and the Polar Exploration Mystery Invitation description on page iv. There are 6 other enrichment guides that are designed to work together as companion activities with this enrichment guide. Although you don t necessarily need these other guides to make this enrichment guide work, they are designed to show you how to antique items, make artifacts and other period based items where you can hide the clues. See page iii for this listing of the Polaris Chronicles - Polar Exploration series. ii

6 Polar Exploration Mystery Invitation DIRECTIONS: Make a copy of the invitation below, cut it out and glue onto a separate sheet of paper. Antique this new sheet of paper invitation and give it along with a copy of page 14. Dear You are about to embark on a journey of extraordinary proportions. The adventure begins with the arrival of this unexpected package. Inside this package will be a handcrafted polar exploration box filled with exciting and imaginative ideas to set your mind to a time when courage and adventure went hand and hand. Join the likes of Admiral Perry, Ernest Shackleton, and other great explorers through both authentic and fictional memorabilia. But...underneath all of this is another storyline. One that must be discovered. There are hidden clues, ciphers and puzzles woven into the memorabilia and material. It is a story within a story. The scene is an expedition set during the early 1900 s. You will be participating in a voyage of discovery to the Arctic & Antarctic with the International Society of Adventure & Discovery. You will be traveling with Professor Polaris, the commander of the expedition. The outcome of the expedition is unknown. It is your story to tell. As you review each item in the box, you will find yourself having a most extraordinary experience. Each item is designed to stir your imagination and assist you in creating your own version or versions of a polar adventure. The items in the box become prompts for numerous storylines which you create. The items can be used separately or woven together. Use the items to generate an ongoing historic fiction, solve and write a mystery, participate as a member of an expedition to the polar regions, design a fictional scrapbook and much more. The Polar Exploration Mystery Box is a unique gift. There are secrets to be discovered which are hidden throughout the contents of the box. You are encouraged to look carefully at each and every object. Some of these items hide clues. The hidden clues provide information which will allow you to fill out the sheet you will receive. To find the clues you will have to solve the riddles. The riddles require thought in order to figure out where a clue can be found. The riddles do not have to be solved in any particular order, but some clues require the use of another clue to discover information to fill in on the What to Discover sheet. Once you have solved the riddles and found all of the clues you will have the beginnings of a potential story based on the characters, settings and plots you find. The story is yet to be written. It is up to you to weave all these items together. Some of the information is based on real historic people and events. In some cases the information is fictional. All of it is based on the Heroic Age of Polar Exploration. iv
