6 Information Institutions/ Storehouses Information can be stored in various organizations such as archives, museums, art galleries and libraries. According to Dictionary. com( a library is a place set apart to contain books, periodicals and other material for reading, viewing,, listening, study or reference.

7 Archives definition Archives, Is a place or collection containing records, documents or other materials of historical interest eg. old land deeds in the municipal archives The Free Dictionary ( freedictionary.com/archive Predominant type of information are printed materials but other information formats may be available. May also contain artefacts, paintings or sculptures

8 Art gallery definition An art gallery is a room or group of rooms or other space where works of art are placed on display, possibly for sale.( Your Dictionary dictionary.com/art_gallery) Art galleries may contain artefacts, paintings, sculptures May be private or national

9 Museum definition A museum is a building or place where art, scientific specimens or other objects of permanent value are kept and displayed) Dictionary.com at Museums - artefacts and other objects of scientific, artistic, cultural, or historical importance

10 The Internet The internet is a global network of computers It is a virtual collection of all kinds of information

11 Library definition - A room or set of rooms or building where books may be read or borrowed. A commercial establishment lending books for a fixed charge: a lending library According to Wikipedia(https//en. wikipedia.org/wiki/library A library is a collection of sources of information and similar resources made accessible to a defined community for reference or borrowing.

12 Types of Libraries Public libraries Accessible by the generalpublic Funded frompublic sources, such as taxes. Collect a diverse range of materials The Avicena Library is the public library in Chinhoyi and it is run by the Chinhoyi Municipality

13 Types of Libraries National Libraries Established by the government of a country to serve as the major repository of information for that country. Normally hold Legal deposit status Do not normally allow citizens to borrow books. Open to serious researchers only National Archives and the Bulawayo Public Library are the legal deposit libraries of Zimbabwe

14 Types of Libraries Special Libraries Established by an organisation or government agency to provide specialised information for that organisation eg. The Institute of Mining Research at the University of Zimbabwe Normally collects serials and provides access to specialised databases Currency of materials is of paramount importance

15 The Academic Library Established at a higher education institution to support the academic programmes and the research needs of the university faculty and students. Collects books, periodicals and other non-book materials and electronic databases

25 Locating Information (CUT Library) Libraries organise their holdings using classification schemes. Classification schemes provide a way of organising materials by subject. A number of library classification systems exist. The two most commonly used classification schemes in academic libraries are the Dewey Decimal Classification Scheme (DDC) and the Library of Congress Classification Scheme (LC).

26 Library of Congress Classification Scheme (LC) LC divides all knowledge into twenty-one basic classes/subjects Each class is identified by a single letter of the alphabet Classes are further divided into more specific subclasses, identified by two or three-letter combinations. For example, class N, Art, has subclasses NA, Architecture; NB, Sculpture, ND, Painting; as well as several other subclasses.

34 Discussion It has often been asserted that if you want to hide anything from an African, put it in a book. Is there justification in this assertion?

35 Conclusion This presentation looked at the various institutions that store information in various formats. The different types of libraries and their functions were examined and finally the CUT Library and its organisation and services came under scrutiny.
