3 MEMBERSHIPS All registered CPUT students and staff have free membership to all our CPUT Libraries. Students and/or staff cards must be shown in order to gain access. BRANCH FOCUS Education, Agriculture, Sports Management, Tourism, Accountancy, Office Management Technology, Internal Auditing, Cost and Management Accounting COLLECTIONS Audio Visual Consist of materials in various formats e.g. videos, CD s DVD s, etc. Africana A small specialised collection of material dealing with sub-saharan Africa and published before This collection can only be viewed under supervision of a staff member. For Africana enquiries contact Ms Martine Bester (bestermt@cput.ac.za) Posters This is a collection of visual teaching materials. The items are kept in cabinets and may be borrowed by students. Children s literature Separate collections of children s literature items can be borrowed for a period of 14 days. Maps Maps are held in special map cabinets and may only be used in the library. Music A sheet music collection is available to all users and can be borrowed for a period of 14 days. Open Shelves Most items belong to the Open Shelf collection. These items may be borrowed by users for a 3, 7 or 14 day period and can be renewed. Reference: Reference items are housed in a separate collection and may only be used in the library. Interesting reference titles includes: The Continuum encyclopedia of children s literature R CON Sage library of tourism, hospitality and Leisure series R TOU South African Genealogies vol R SUI The Oxford companion to Wine R OXF Short Loan These items have been placed on Short Loan behind the circulation desk and are only available to a user for a few hours at a time in the library. Journals The Journals collection houses current and bound volumes. As a rule print journals may not be borrowed. Use the library catalogue to find print journal titles. Note that the library might not subscribe to all the years, volumes, issues and numbers of a journal. The largest percentage of our journal collection is electronic/online available. 4 SERVICES Borrowing Books and some bound periodicals may be borrowed and returned at the Circulation Desk of the Library. The following lending services, described below, are all available at the Circulation Desk: Issues Returns Renewals Reservations Requesting books from branch libraries Lost books Lost and found Issues Books can only be taken out on presentation of a valid student, staff or membership card. No books will be issued on another borrower's card. Books have 3 day and 14 day lending periods. While the majority of the books can be borrowed for 14 days, books that are in high demand can only be borrowed for 3 days. The date of return will be stamped on the date slips. It is the responsibility of the borrower to check the due dates and make sure that the books are returned on time. Borrowers will be fined for books that are returned late. The fines are generated by the computerised circulation system and it blocks further loans to any borrower with fines on their name. Fines must, therefore, be paid immediately at the Circulation Desk. Borrowers have the following privileges: Undergraduates: 6 items for 7 or 14 days B.Tech: 9 items for 7 or 14 days M.Tech and D.Tech: 12 items for 7 or 30 days Staff: 12 items for 3, 7 or 30 days Alumni: 2 items for 7 or 14 days Returns Books are to be returned at the Circulation Desk. Please return books on time and do not leave them unattended. Make sure that the books have been cleared against your name otherwise you will be held responsible for any fines incurred. Renewals You may renew 14-day loan books issued to you, if someone else has not reserved the book(s). Such renewals of books issues for 14 days may be done twice only. However, 3-day loan books cannot be renewed. Renewals may be done telephonically, via the website or in person. Reservations You can place a reservation on a book that has been issued to another borrower. These reservations can be placed on the OPAC (the computerised catalogue). When the book is returned, the staff at the Circulation Desk will you, alternatively the borrower can check-in at the Circualtion Desk enquiring if the book has been returned. Requesting books from branch libraries You may request books from other branches by completing an Inter-Branch request form at the Circulation Desk. When the book arrives the staff at the Desk will the borrower or the borrower can check in to enquire if the book has arrived. Lost books If you lose a book, please inform the staff at the Circulation Desk. The replacement cost of the book will be calculated and you will have to pay the replacement cost as well as a handling fee (R50) and any fines attached to the book of the lost book. The fines and handling fee are not refundable. Lost and found The Circulation Desk has a lost and found section. Users of the library may check with the staff at the Circulation Desk when they have lost something in the Library. Information General information enquiries and assistance with finding of information on shelves and use of the library catalogue are handled by staff at the enquiries and information helpdesk.. 5 Information search guides Information search guide for education Information search guide for Agriculture Information search guide for Business Training and instruction We offer information literacy training sessions to ensure that our users are able to use information effectively. The information librarian Ms Joanne Arendse at tel. +27 (0) , is responsible for training services. Types of training available include: Individual training to students and academics, Library tours/orientation: introduce the layout and services of the library to new students or staff. Subject specific group training sessions requested by lecturers. This is normally one shot hands-on training sessions presented in an electronic classroom. Curriculum integrated training developed in collaboration with the lecturer/department. A module is identified in which information literacy is formulated as an outcome. Information skills are integrated within the module and assessed accordingly. Postgraduate Research Support An online guide to useful resources and information for postgraduates and academic researchers is available on the Library Services website at Off-Campus You can access electronic resources (databases, e-journals, e-books, refworks etc.) from home or outside CPUT. Go to CPUT Library Services webpage and click on the Off-campus access to databases link Inter library loans Material not available in the Library Services own collection may be obtained for clients from other Southern African or international institutions by way of national and international interlibrary loan schemes. A free national interlibrary loan service is provided to registered students and staff members of the University. Click here for more information. Photocopy and print Photocopy and print facilities are available in the library. Use the self-help machine in the library to purchase print/photocopy credits. Only R10, R20 and R50 notes can be used to buy credits on your student card. Laminating and binding This service is available during office hours (8:00 16:30), Monday to Friday. We laminate all sizes up to A2 and ring bind up to A3 size. If possible, please submit your document/s a day before. NO EATING CELLPHONES MUST be SWITCHED OFF - it is a big disturbance to others. NO silent ring tones allowed in the Library. NO SMOKING Students are required to be QUIET in the Library, to allow others to study. NO WEAPONS of whatever kind are allowed whatsoever. All should take care of library books and periodicals, to allow others to use it later. Cases of alleged theft or attempted theft of library items WILL BE PROSECUTED. Similarly, any deliberate damage to a book or another item WILL BE PROSECUTED. Students are requested to report any transgressions so that action can be taken, and damage be prevented. This will help keep costs low for everyone and make your studies more affordable. A closed circuit surveillance system is in operation at all times. Please hand any lost property in at the Main Desk. OFFENDERS WILL BE ASKED TO LEAVE THE LIBRARY IMMEDIATELY! SOME OFFENCES COULD LEAD TO THE OFFENDER BEING EXPELLED FROM THE INSTITUTION. The Library is there for you, please feel free to use if often and ask whenever you need help! The Librarians are there to assist you.
