Inventory Code: $ Sir Charles Lyell ( ) was a British lawyer and the foremost geologist of his day. One of the first scientists to believe that the world is older than 300 million years, Lyell was a close and influential friend of Charles Darwin. In 1841, Lyell embarked upon a journey throughout eastern North America to lecture and gather data, resulting in this book. While the volumes are full of references to fossil remains, geographical features, and rock strata, even non-geologists will find interest in Lyell s comments on slavery, Charles Dickens, and the mirage of Toronto (Part II, p. 85). Inventory Code: $1, Captain Parry s second voyage to the Arctic failed to discover a passage to the Pacific, but he managed to chart and explore a considerable area of the Arctic, previously unknown, stretching from Southampton Island north to Baffin Island. In addition, the almost continual contact with the Inuit of Melville Peninsula yielded a wealth of information on their culture, way of life, and language which was included in this published version of Parry s journal of the voyage. This study of the Canadian landscape is the second book on which Bartlett and author Willis collaborated.

Inventory Code: $3, After his expedition for the Admiralty in 1818, John Ross reported that both Smith Sound and Lancaster Sound were enclosed by mountains, a mistake for which he was later severely criticised. When the Admiralty rejected his plan to use a steamship to explore Prince Regent Inlet, Ross gained the private sponsorship of the gin merchant Sir Felix Booth for his second expedition from 1829 to With his nephew James Clark Ross as second-in-command, Ross crossed Boothia Isthmus (named after his new patron) and reached the magnetic pole but was forced to abandon ship because of scurvy and because the ship was beset by ice. The Rosses and their crew spent four harrowing winters in the Arctic before the whaler Isabella eventually picked them up in Lancaster Sound. - Report from the Select Committee Appointed to take into consideration the Accounts and Papers relating to the Canal Communications in Canada. He worked as an engineer and oversaw the fortification of Fort Henry in Kingston, ON. This book is the second of four works that he wrote during his travels and service in the British Empire s Canadian territories.

Simeon Perkins was a British Military Officer from Nova Scotia who served in defense of his post in Liverpool NS during the American Revolution, the French Revolutionary Wars, and the Napoleonic Wars. Inventory Code: $ Samuel Hearne ( ), explorer, fur-trader, author, and naturalist, was the first European to make an overland excursion across northern Canada to the Arctic Ocean, via the Coppermine River. His journal is edited by Joseph Burr Tyrrell ( ), Canadian geologist, cartographer, and mining consultant. Tyrrell led the 1893 and 1894 expeditions into the Northern Barren Lands; it was the first visit to the region by a white man since the explorations of Samuel Hearne himself in the 1770s. 7. J. B. Inventory Code: $5, David Thompson ( ) wrote this narrative at the end of his life and died in poverty and obscurity. The Champlain Society s publication marked the first time the narrative appeared in print. Part I recounts Thompson s life while employed by the Hudson s Bay and North West Companies between 1784 and 1807, when he ranged the country between Lake Superior and Hudson Bay west to the Rockies. Part II details his time as a partner of the North West Company from 1807 to 1812, when Thompson was active in what are now Alberta, British Columbia, Montana, Idaho, and Washington. Inventory Code: $ Colnett is remembered largely for his involvement in the Nootka Crisis of This dispute between British traders and the Spanish Navy over the use of Nootka Sound developed into an international crisis that led Britain and Spain to the brink of war before being peacefully resolved through diplomacy. Colnett s role in the initial incident that sparked the international crisis makes this account of his second fur trading voyage of historical importance. The journal includes the events at Nootka Sound in 1789.

Very good condition. Inventory Code: $ Letitia MacTavish Hargrave ( ) wrote these letters after her marriage to James Hargrave chief fur trader for the Hudson s Bay Company. She left Scotland and joined him at York Factory (Manitoba) in These letters are historically significant because Hargrave was one of only a few Western women to live in the harsh environs of HBC territory at this period and her letters offer readers a woman s insight into the social context in which HBC s fur trade operated. 12. Lady ABERDEEN; SAYWELL, John T. (ed.). The Canadian Journal of Lady Aberdeen Title continues: With Correspondence Between the Governors of Canada and the French Court, Touching the Search for the Western Sea. A former soldier turned fur trader and explorer, La Vérendrye pressed the boundaries of New France and its fur trading operations west from Lake of the Woods into the prairies. While the quest to find a water route to the Pacific Ocean was unsuccessful, the explorations of La Verendrye and his sons in the early 18th century covered enormous territory, including the Manitoba lakes, Saskatchewan River, Missouri River, and locations as distant as what is now North Dakota and Wyoming. Inventory Code: $ When Ishbel Gordon, Lady Aberdeen, suffered a nervous breakdown in 1889, her doctors suggested a long holiday. She opted to travel to Canada with her husband, John Hamilton Gordon, seventh Earl of Aberdeen. The choice of Canada stemmed from their interest in immigration as a solution to Britain s social ills. Lord Aberdeen was then named Governor-General of Canada. One of the most important manuscripts relating to Canada in the mid-1890s, Lady Aberdeen s Journal casts considerable light on the many political, social, and economic situations faced by Canada in that decade. 13. Inventory Code: As a national organization devoted to the publication of Canadian historical documents, The Champlain Society could hardly have found better material to publish than David Thompson s journal. As a fur trader, surveyor and map-maker, Thompson mapped over 3.9 million square kilometers of North America, making him one of the greatest land geographers who ever lived. His descriptions of life at a trading post, the various native peoples he encountered and the rivers and scenery he explored make excellent reading. 18. E. E. RICH; FLEMING, R. Harvey (eds.). Inventory Code: $ While the letters do not begin until 1817, they refer as far back as 1809, when Colin Robertson left the North West Company, eventually joining the HBC in The main body of letters begins after Robertson s second seizure of the North West Company s Fort Gibraltar (Winnipeg) in March 1816 and the Seven Oaks Massacre that June.
