Developing library services to support Research and Development (R&D): The journey to developing relationships. Anne Webb and Steve Glover HLG July 2014

Overview Background The Christie Repository - 5 years on Leiden and other metrics Bibliometric analysis and issues in tracking publication output Next steps and future collaboration

The Journey We care, we discover, we teach..committed to delivering top quality cancer care, access to all, alongside excellent education and world class research. How can we contribute to and support organisational research?

The Researcher Research workflow: Effectiveness and efficiency Tools and Resources: Discovery, access, information management Collaboration and support: Repository services, funding opportunities

The Organisation Contribute to core objectives: Research Guidance Support for bids and funding Knowledge management- repositories, databases

The Christie Repository Christie Research output : 10,000+ articles 1930 s on Phase 1: Research lists Access database Basic functionality: Links to full text via DOI, Search by keyword or author Phase 2: BMC Open Repository software Quick and easy to develop Additional features Web database

Where are we now?..5 years on Historical record of published research Visibility for research Manageable Further functionality- RSS feeds Supporting R&D - utilising functionality, visibility, additional items Vehicle to mandate

Moving forward Tracking research - additional content Highlighting research: Medical staff and senior nurses link to repository articles Developing utility Building relationships

Bibliometric Analysis Analysis of publication trends, citation rates, and impact: ISI Institute of Scientific Information Gold standard Science Citation Index Web of Knowledge Journal Citation Reports ISI - H index SCImago Journal & Country Rank Scopus

Issues with bibliometric analysis Journal Impact Factors The impact factor calculation Different citation rates in different disciplines Coverage Skewed citations and artificial citation rates Time issues publication lags

Journal Impact Factors Issued annually as part of Journal Citation Reports Measures the average citedness of a journal title over a two year period Total number of citations in 2013 to all articles published in 2011 & = Impact Number of citable articles published in 2011 & 2012 Factor

Problems with using Impact Factors Should not be used to compare journals in different disciplines e.g. Biochemistry with Public Health Individual articles can skew citation rates (Seglen, 1992) Impact Factor of a journal does not correlated with citation rates for individual articles Citable articles disadvantages some journals and favours others Popular with NHS R&D departments as they are used a a surrogate for quality

Issues in tracking publication output Address/affiliation information: A&I databases: PubMed only indexed address of first author (end 2013) Information supplied to publishers by authors Consistency: Non standardised conventions used Content: Publications not tracked by ISI or PubMed Conference abstracts sources dispersed Processes: Non mandated notification of publication by author Time issues citation rates, publication lags

Biomedical Research Centres (BRC) Leiden and other metrics Bibliometrics used to support identification of candidates (Van Leeuwen.2007) Large sample Highly cited publications (HCP) Network analysis Leiden Global university ranking system Uses only Web of Knowledge databases (WoS) Does not use data supplied by client Document types used: Article, letter, review.
