2 For research, students are mostly using web sources, but sometimes a printed magazine or book is also useful. Here are the most common types of citations students use. They are labeled in color coded format. KEY OF COMMON SOURCES MAGAZINE/NEWSPAPER ARTICLE Author(s). Title of Article. Title of Periodical Day Month Year: pages. Medium of publication (Print, Web, DVD, etc). BOOK Author(s). Title of Book. City of Publication: Publisher, Year of Publication. Medium of Publication (Print, Web, DVD, etc). WEBPAGE Editor, author, or compiler name (if available). Title of Article/Webpage. Name of. Name of institution/organization affiliated with the site (sponsor or publisher), date of resource creation (if available). Medium of publication (Print, Web, DVD, etc). Date of access (when you visited the site). 2

4 Works Cited Use the title Works Cited at the top center of your page. Buchman, Dana. "A Special Education." Good Housekeeping Mar. 2006: Print. The author s name is written as Last Name, First Name. "Diseases and Conditions." Cleveland Clinic. Cleveland Clinic, Web. 10 Apr This source did not feature an author s name, which sometimes happens. So, I could move ahead to the title of the article/webpage instead and just skip the author section completely. The source says I used the most recent copyright year (2014) for my date. All good, reliable sources should at least give you a year. On a website, you can often find the copyright date at the very bottom of the page in small print. Sometimes only the copyright year is provided. It s okay to use just a year instead of a full date (day, month, year) if that s all that is provided. The publisher (Cleveland Clinic) is also listed here. It s the same as the name of the website, which happens a lot. 4

This is the same as the name of the entire website, which happens a lot. It s very common to find both the publisher and the date for a website at the very bottom of the page in very small print. I found the last updated date at the bottom of the page. It s February 14, This time, the website gave me a full date, but sometimes only a year is provided, which is okay. 6 This is Purdue University s Online Writing Lab. It contains all the most up-to-date information on MLA style. I have provided you with the most common information in this guide, but their website contains more details if you need them. This is Easy Bib, which is a helpful guide for creating citations for your online sources. You are welcome to use it if you like. Beware of the following tips if you choose to use an online source generator like Easy Bib. TIPS: Make sure you have it set to MLA and not another citation type, such as APA or Chicago style. Easy Bib tends to have trouble finding the Publisher and/or the Date for you. You may need to search the bottom of the website and find them. Then, you can plug them into the Easy Bib citation generator. 6
