2 Supervisor for Language Arts & Humanities K-12 GET In the GAME, READ! In our efforts to avoid Summer Reading Loss, the Roselle Public School District recommends the following required summer reading books for. An array of classic and contemporary literature is provided for students to build knowledge, gain perspectives, and explore various genres. Additionally, we have included required reading books for History classes. General Information Some copies of the listed books can be found either at the Roselle Public Library or the Abraham Clark High School Library. Students may purchase their books at Barnes and Noble located in Springfield (Rt.22), and Clark. Grade 8 English ( Students entering 8 th grade in September, 2016) All students in Grades 8 are required to read two books (One required book and one choice). In addition, you will complete any of the reading activities as stated in the guidelines and complete a required writing assignment or digital presentation. The writing assignment should be typed and double spaced or written legibly on a clean sheet of paper with your name, and grade level. The assignments are due to your English teacher no later than September 12, Each required assignment will count as a test grade. You should also be prepared to take a test on the required reading when you come back in September. You may read additional books besides the two requirements and complete an additional activity for extra credit. Writing Requirement: 2
3 Write a book review critiquing the book and rating it. Conclude the review by providing a recommendation for the reader to read the book or not. 6 Writing Requirement for English III Course only : Symbols are objects, characters, figures, and colors used to represent abstract ideas or concepts. What symbolism/s do you find in the story? Explain what it represents and analyze its significance in the story. B Dubois Student s Choice: Read one additional book from the list below and be prepared to take a test in September Freakonomics by Steven Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner All the President s Men by Carl & Woodward Berstein When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson Grade 12 Rising, Honors and AP English ( Students entering 12 th grade in September, 2016) All students in Grade 12 ( British Literature) are required to read several books (one to two required books for English and one for History and choices of short stories (Please refer to the required number below ). In addition, you will complete a required writing assignment. The writing assignment should be typed and double spaced or written legibly on a clean sheet of paper with your name, and grade level. This will be submitted to your English teacher no later than September 6

Writing Requirement for English IV Course only: Write a 2 3 pg. critical analysis on the required book. Analyze the character, plot, language, and overall tone or mood of the story. Explain whether or not the author was successful in achieving its intended effect on the audience? Provide specific examples from the text. (MLA format) (12 font, times new roman) 1. 9 Additional List of High Interest Books Students may choose from any of the additional high interest Reading list below and complete any of the reading activities found on the first page of this packet. Guidelines: You may select from any of the following activities to support your choice of books. You may use technology and other forms of media (e.g. Prezi, I Movie, Voice Thread, Podcast, on line Posters, etc.) in any of your presentations. This is a graded requirement for both English and History courses! 1. Write a book review critiquing the book and rating it. Conclude the review by providing a recommendation for the reader to read the book or not. This must be at least two pages typed and double spaced. 2. Write a letter to the author and share your reactions to the book. 3. Pretend to be a publicist for the book that you have read. Write and deliver a speech that will persuade other students to read the book. 4. Write a movie script for a favorite scene in a book just read. 5. Write a newspaper front page that is devoted entirely to the book you read. The front page should look as much like a real newspaper page as possible. The articles on the front page should be based on events and characters in the book. 6. Create a comic book, complete with comic style illustrations and dialogue bubbles. 7. Create life size portraits of both the protagonist and antagonist from the book read. The portrait should include a written piece that tells about the character. The piece might also include information about events, traits, or conflicts in the book that involve the character. 8. Create an alternate ending for the book. This must be at least two pages typed and double spaced. 9. Find a song or a poem that relates to the theme of your book and explain the similarities. 10. Pretend that you are one of the characters in the book you read. Tape a monologue of that character telling of his or her experiences. Be sure to write out scrip before taping. You could perform this live if you so choose. 9
