1 Poetry Report This project has been assigned and explained in detail on Friday, 2/20. The project is due no later than Wednesday, 3/11. Projects are due during class time. Projects not with the student during class time will be marked late. *Exception-if a student is out sick or there is a family emergency that has been communicated prior. Students who know that they will not be here on Wednesday, 3/11, due to a prearranged absence, will need to turn their report in early. **This counts as both a reading and writing test grade. **Any project turned in late will have 10 points taken off. Everyday that the project is not turned in on the assigned due date, 10 points will be taken off of the student s project grade until the project is turned in. A good amount of class time will be used to work on this project. Please bring your research, supplies, and be ready to work! While class time will be given to work, students will still need time at home to work on this project. You are to choose from the list of poets attached. Once you have chosen your poet you are going to need to do research on your poet. You may use the Internet (not Wikipedia) or go to the library. You will need to complete a Works Cited page (attached) telling where you got your resources from to get your (it does not have to be in MLA). The essay should be handwritten in manuscript. Lines should be skipped in between paragraphs. In addition to the essay you will need to create an 8 ½ by 11 piece of paper that will turn into a decorated poster to present your poet to the class. Students may use the front and back of the 8 ½ by 11 piece of paper for their poster. We will display the posters out in the hallway. No poster should be any larger than 8 ½ by 11 so that all can display them.

2 While the overall due date is 3/11, due dates have been set to ensure that you have completed each section and will count as a homework grade. *The essay should be a total of four paragraphs, no more and no less. The sections are broken down below into your different paragraphs-background, education, poetry, and favorite poem. The Essay must include: 1. Due date Friday, 2/27 Background a. Birth and death b. Parents/ siblings c. Where they were born and where they grew up d. If they married and to who e. If they had children and to who f. Other jobs they may have had besides being a writer or before being a writer. g. Any other interesting facts about their personal life. 2. Due date Monday, 3/2 Education a. How many years did he/she go to school? b. Did he/ she go to college? c. Was he/ she well educated? d. What did he or she excel in at school? 3. Due date Thursday, 3/5 Poetry a. What type of poetry was this poet known for? b. What common themes or topics did the poet usually write about? c. What format did this poet usually write in? d. When they became famous for their poetry (before or after death) and why. e. If you can- why this person became a poet 4. Due date Monday, 3/9 Your Favorite poem- not one read in class (also attach a copy) a. Which was your favorite poem? Why? b. What is the poem about? c. What is the theme or the message from the poem? d. Analyze one stanza of the poem. What is the poet saying in this part? What is the message? How does it make you feel? Does it change the way you think or the way you look at something why or why not?
