1 AP World History Summer 2017 Assignment The summer reading assignment is essential to the integration into AP World History. This assignment includes reading at least 2 books from the list provided. Along with the reading, you are required to create a book review pertaining to your selected reading. Understanding written topics in World History, as well as assessing the writer s point-of-view and reasoning, is just as important as learning history itself. Refer to all instructions explaining this assignment. Students enrolled in 10th Grade for the school year are eligible to take AP World History. In order to be admitted to the class, students must complete the summer reading assignment while on summer break. Students are limited to taking two college-level courses during the school year. Due Date (Summer Reading Assignment) Monday, August 7, 2017 The book review must be typed and turned in to Ms. Moreno in hard copy format, or ed no later than midnight of the due date. McNeill v Crusades Through Arab Eyes by Amin Maalouf MLA FORMAT What is MLA Format? The MLA format is a style of writing that requires a specific layout. Paper: 81/2- by 11-inch paper. Font: Times New Roman or Courier 12 point font. Margins: One-inch margins all around the text of your paper -- left side, right side, and top and bottom. Paragraphs should be indented half an inch; block quotations should be indented one inch from the left margin. Spacing: Double-spaced, including quotations, notes, and the list of works cited. Heading and Title: On the first page, at the left-hand margin, type your name, your instructor's name, the course name and number, and the date -- all on separate, double-spaced lines. Then double-space and center the title above your text. (If your title requires more than one line, double-space between the lines.) After the title, double-space before beginning your text. The title should be neither underlined nor written in all capital letters. Capitalize only the first, last, and principal words of the title. Titles might end with a question mark or an exclamation mark if that is appropriate, but not in a period. No title page is required for MLA format unless specified by your instructor. Page Numbers: Upper right-hand corner of each page, one-half inch from the top. Type your last name before the page number. Most word processing programs provide for a "header," which you can set up as you create the format for the

3 paper, at the same time you are establishing specifications such as the one-inch margins and the double-spacing. Do not use the abbreviation "p." or any other mark before the page number. MLA Works Cited Book *Remember to place the citation under HANGING INDENTATION. -Paragraph Tab -Under Indentation, click Hanging under the SPECIAL TAB. Example: Robinson, Patricia A. Title of the book (in italics) 4. Name of the editor, translator, or compiler 5. Edition used 6. Number(s) of the volume(s) used 7. Place of publication, name of publisher, and date of publication 8. Page numbers; if not available use n. pag. 9. Supplementary bibliographic information and annotation 10. Medium of publication 11. Name of the series What is a Book Review? A book review is built around a summary of the contents of the books but also includes an analysis of the author's argument, the strengths and weaknesses of the book, the sources used, etc. See the outline below for a more detailed description. Three Basic Sections of a Book Review: I. Author (should be brief) 1. Information about the author 2. Author s qualifications 3. His frame of reference (reasons for writing the book) II. III. Contents (plan of the book and a review of its contents) 1. Major thesis of the book 2. Findings of particular interest 3. Examples of the above Critical Analysis (most essential section and should comprise most of the review) 1. Author s sources 2. Does the author acknowledge ideas and theories that strengthen his thesis? 3. Major strengths of the book 4. To whom will this book have lasting value? Would you recommend it? Why? Why not?
