1 MLA Style Guide 8 th Edition 2017 Western Michigan University Libraries This is a select list of examples and reflects the MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers (8th ed.) Sources you are using for your research may differ substantially from these examples. We strongly recommend checking the MLA Handbook for further guidance (available in most of the WMU Libraries reference collections at call number LB 2369.G53). Works Cited items are listed alphabetically at the end of the research paper. Parenthetical references (also called in-text citations) appear in the body of the paper and refer to items in the Works Cited list. In the 7th edition of the MLA Handbook, a separate set of citation instructions was given for each format type. The problem with this approach is that there is no way to anticipate all format types a student may encounter. To solve this problem, the new, 8th edition of the MLA Handbook provides a universal set of guidelines (or Core Elements ) for citing sources across all format types: Core Elements Each entry in the list of works cited is composed of facts common to most works the MLA core elements. They are assembled in a specific order:

7 Sample Works Cited Page General rules for formatting Works Cited Page for MLA. (5.3.2) 1. Begin Works Cited list on new page and number each page. (Continue the page numbering from the paper.) 1. Begin at left margin (1 in) from the top of the page. 2. Center the title Works Cited. 3. Indent ½ inch on the second line of the citation(s). 4. Double-space between the Works Cited titles and the list and within/between entries. 5. List entries in alphabetical order by author last name. 6. Double-space entries. 7. The Works Cited page does not need page numbers for books but the parenthetical citation does.
