1 DIAGRAM DENOTATIVE 1. A figure, usually consisting of a line drawing, made to accompany and illustrate a geometrical theorem, mathematical demonstration, etc. 2. A drawing or plan that outlines and explains the parts, operation, etc., of something. 3. A chart, plan, or scheme. (dictionary.com) CONNOTATIVE Diagrams, much like science and mathematics, are often thought to be neutral and objective. We forget that they are created by humans and therefore prone to bias and error. Diagrams can reinforce and replicate existing systems of power through the ways in which they employ heirarchy and use existing design languages.

6 GEOMETRY DENOTATIVE 1. The branch of mathematics that deals with the deduction of the properties, measurement, and relationships of points, lines, angles, and figures in space from their defining conditions by means of certain assumed properties of space. 2. Any specific system of this that operates in accordance with a specific set of assumptions. 3. the study of this branch of mathematics. 4. A book on this study, especially a textbook. 5. The shape or form of a surface or solid. 6. A design or arrangement of objects in simple rectilinear or curvilinear form. (dictionary.com) CONNOTATIVE This word brings to mind simplicity, symmetry, and harmony. Geometries are basic but they re how we learn to view the word and interpret complex objects. In preschool, we played with wooden building blocks to understand how structures work. A head is an oval, a skirt is a triangle, person far away is a rectangle.

11 RHYTHM DENOTATIVE 1. Movement or procedure with uniform or patterned recurrence of a beat, accent, or the like. 2. Music -- the pattern of regular or irregular pulses caused in music by the occurrence of strong and weak melodic and harmonic beats. 3. Measured movement, as in dancing. 4. Art, Literature. a patterned repetition of a motif, formal element, etc., at regular or irregular intervals in the same or a modified form. 5. The effect produced in a play, film, novel, etc., by the combination or arrangement of formal elements, as length of scenes, speech and description, timing, or recurrent themes, to create movement, tension, and emotional value in the development of the plot. 6. The pattern of recurrent strong and weak accents, vocalization and silence, and the distribution and combination of these elements in speech. (dictionary.com) CONNOTATIVE Rhythm creates the background energy we feel but aren t always conscious of. Rhythm has a groove, usually has to do with music. If someone has rhythm, we praise them. It s embarassing not to have rhythm when you re dancing or bopping along to a song.

16 GESTURE DENOTATIVE 1. A movement or position of the hand, arm, body, head, or face that is expressive of an idea, opinion, emotion, etc.: the gestures of an orator; a threatening gesture. 2. The use of such movements to express thought, emotion, etc. 3. Any action, courtesy, communication, etc., intended for effect or as a formality; considered expression; demonstration: a gesture of friendship. 4. Digital Technology. a particular movement of the body, typically the fingers or hand, used to control or interact with a digital device (often used attributively): a gesture command. (dictionary.com) CONNOTATIVE Gesture used to bring to mind mostly ballerinas and conductors, but now I think of tech buzzwords like gestural interface. Gesture has been co-opted by the tech industry and blurred the definition of artistry. A gesture can also be obscene (flipping someone off), or friendly (waving at someone to walk over to you).

21 FABRICATED DENOTATIVE 1. To make by art or skill and labor; construct. 2. To make by assembling parts or sections. 3. To devise or invent (a legend, lie, etc.). 4. To fake; forge (a document, signature, etc.). (dictionary.com) CONNOTATIVE When I think of a fabricated thing, I think of artificiality. A lie, an imagined thing, something woven out of thin air. I also think of the fabrication of objects, either artistically or on an assembly line. Fabrication can also have a mechanical quality.
