Rakesh Sood Paris 14 th March 2012 Under the High Patronage of the Embassy of India in France Lire: India Celebrating Indian Literature in France Literature from Indian writers delights French Readers. Celebrating an amazing success story during a special evening with a conference, dance and dinner. "#$%&'()*+,-.(*% "#$%&'(#)*+#,*-./#'$*
2 Indian Literature is becoming popular in the West and in France it is quite common these days, to come upon a book by an Indian writer in a French bookshop. This success has been further accentuated by the increasing success each year of the Jaipur Literature festival in India. Indian Writing Indian Literature seems to be riding a powerful economic wave. Indian economy with its high rate of growth has generated much development of art and culture. Indian writers have been winning many international awards. Arundhati Roy was awarded the booker prize, Jumpa Lahiri the Pulitzer, V.S Naipaul the Nobel, Kiran Desai a Man booker prize are some that have had great success in France. Others such as Salman Rushdie, Tarun Tejpal, Suketu Mehta, Amitav Ghosh, Vikram Seth are just the tip of the iceberg there is a wealth of regional language writers and classical texts to be discovered by publishers in France as yet. It is vital for the French publishing world and the press to take notice of this immense world of literature that seems to be in the starting blocks. This world of Indian Writing promises a future full of interesting reads and publishing potential. Exploring and analysing this trend in depth in company of a series of speakers who have been associated with Indian writing for some time now, we hope to provide each one with interesting perspectives into the present and the future of Indian writing.
3 20h Keynote Address by His Excellency the Ambassador of India to France Shri Rakesh Sood Followed by Roundtable conference Speakers are key figures from the world of Indian Literature and the French publishing world. The programme The round table will discuss the need to explore the rise of Indian Literature in the world and especially in France in all its aspects. The analysis of the present situation and a pertinent projection on the future of Indian Literature in France will be the key focus of the roundtable. 21h - Kathak performance Kathak Performance with story telling by Sharmila Sharma one of India s leading Kathak dancers based in Paris. Story telling is one of human kind s oldest traditions. It has been conveyed in myriad forms including literature. One of the major dance forms of Indian Classical traditions is Kathak. It literally means telling a story. Katha, in sanskrit, means story and the dancer is given the role of the storyteller. He or she uses the body and expressions to tell the story to a background of music and song. Sharmila Sharma presents a beautiful and unique performance accompanied by Tabla and the Bamboo Flute to a rendering of an episode from one of Indian Literature s timeless classics Shakuntala. Shakuntala appeared in the initial chapter of the Mahabharata as a tale. The classical Sanskrit poet and dramatist one of the forefathers of Indian writings Kalidasa in the 4 th Century AD retold this story in his marvelous theatrical work Abhijnanasakuntalam. 21h30 Dinner
