Given out on Friday 15 th February Due in on Wednesday 27 th February 2019 Spellings: scheme, chorus, echo, character, ache, chaos, stomach, chemistry, orchestra, technology (10 words to be tested on ) Choose 5 words and write a sentence for each one of them. For this half term break we want you to start learning your lines for our Roman Year 3 Assembly the 20 th of March. Please do your best to memorise your lines in order to be able to be ready when we come back. There will be no Maths homework so there should be no excuses! You have more than 10 days! Do your best! Romans Assembly Harry Lear Leah Lexi M Raj Oskar Jack Sam Izzy Ellie-May Sebastiano Alfie Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Year 3 s assembly. Please turn off your phones. Romans didn t have mobile phones 2000 ago! This term we have been learning all about the Romans. So, sit back and relax, and prepare for a real Roman adventure! Hang on a minute don t you think we should tell them out there who the Romans were first? Good idea! The Romans were the people who came from the city of Rome and lived over 2 thousand years ago. Rome was the greatest city of its time. The Romans invaded most of Europe and parts of North Africa, and made them all part of their empire. They even invaded Britain, and beat the Celts in AD 43. They had the best army in the world. They were unbeatable! They were really well organised. The Romans invented central heating and public toilets. Thank heavens for that!

At school,, and had been learning all about the Romans - about their smelly towns, their unusual food, their amazing army and their brilliant public baths. Who can tell me a fact about Roman towns? The buildings were all built in blocks on straight roads. Rich people had large houses with a courtyard which had a pool in it to keep their house cool in the summer. Poor people had to live in blocks of flats which were really crowded. The streets were really smelly because they threw their dirty water out in the road. (Looks to audience) That means their wee! Urrgh!! That s enough, children! And and went back to s house, thinking about how dirty and smelly Roman streets must have been. I really wish we could go to Ancient Rome! Come on, I can t wait for our sleepover! (children find positions). That night, and went to sleep dreaming about Ancient Rome. They were woken up in the morning by an unfamiliar sound. It sounded like marching feet. When got to his feet to look out of the window he realised he was not in his own bed, or his own room, or his own house! Where on Earth are we? They went to the window to look out, just in time to see a column of soldiers marching by. Hang on a minute those are Roman soldiers! Where are they going? decided to follow them. Where are you going? Wait for us! When they got out into the street people started looking at them and pointing. It was then that realised just what exactly had happened to them. Oh no! I don t believe this! We ve spent so much time

3 Alice / Elliot / / Amber Nicole Ruby Daniel Everyone learning about the Romans at school that we ve gone back in time to Ancient Rome! They tried to hide at the back of the line of soldiers who had now marched into their barracks. (shouting) Squad halt! You there at the back, what do you think you re doing? Er They realised they d been spotted by the Centurion. They had heard all about how tough life was in the Roman army, and the awful punishments the soldiers sometimes had, so they hoped the Centurion was feeling in a good mood. I asked you a question! Er We were just following you? So, you want to be in the army, do you? Good decision. Sign here (soldier runs up with clipboard and pen) Er SIGN IT!!! (they all sign) It wasn t quite what the friends had in mind, but they were too frightened to say no. The Centurion looked scary. Can we go now? Call me sir! Can we go now Sir? Very funny! You ve just signed up for the Roman army, mate. You re spending the next 20 years with ME!! suddenly remembered that Roman soldiers joined the army for 20 years. His heart sank. Oh no! 20 years of marching in mud and wearing a skirt!! And, how am I going to explain to Mrs Baggaley why my homework is 20 years late? That night while, and lay in their hard beds in the barracks, they hoped that they would wake up in the morning and it would all be just a bad dream. WAKEY, WAKEY!! But it wasn t. It was definitely NOT a dream. So they decided they had to escape at the earliest chance they got. Squad fall in! Today we are building a new road! Groan!!!

They made a dash for it and hid in one of the side streets. Phew! That was a lucky escape! I didn t fancy building a new road! Listen, I think it s time we got ourselves some proper Roman clothes, because everyone s looking at us! There s a market over there. (walking towards the market, everyone milling around) They came into an open market, with everyone going about their daily business. There were people selling food and vegetables, clothes and pots. And on the other side of the market there was an auction going on. How much is this young man slave worth? Look at those lovely big muscles! I ll take him! Sold to the man on the right for 10 silver coins! Then remembered what they had learned in class about slaves, how they were made to do the most horrible jobs and never got paid. I d hate to be a slave. It can t be much fun spending all day cooking, cleaning and working for your master, and then not even get paid! And they get beaten if they don t work hard enough! Yeah, and they never get any time off to have fun!, and went nearer the front to get a better view. But it was the wrong thing to do. Before they knew what had happened, the slave trader had grabbed. You look like you ve got a good bit of meat on those bones. You ll make an excellent farm worker! No way! I didn t want to be in the army, and I certainly don t want to be a slave! He managed to struggle free with the help of a wicked tackle he d learned at football training, and they made a dash for it. Run for it! They ran away into an impressive looking building, and

5 Jude Ashley Jacob Lexi / Jack Molly suddenly realised that they were a bit overdressed. Because they were now in the public baths, and it was rather hot and steamy! Hey! We re in the public baths! Cool! It s definitely not cool, it s boiling! Then remembered what they had learned at school about how people came to the baths to get clean, have a massage, play board games and socialise. I don t know about you, but I d love a quick swim. Quick, let s have a look around. They wandered into the steam room, and saw lots of men talking and sitting around. Stop! Today is for men only, no women allowed! Ah yes! Remember that men and women had to take it in turns to use the baths; they weren t allowed to use them at the same time. I ll wait for you outside! They wandered into the changing room, where they were spotted by an important looking man. Hello, you re new around here aren t you? Let me introduce myself, I m Marcus Julius. Nice to meet you. I m a Senator. I expect you re impressed at meeting someone so important! What do you do? and remembered that a Senator was like an MP in Britain; in other words, someone very important. They had to think quickly. So said the first thing that came into his head. We are footballers! What is a footballer? Do you make lots of money? Oh yeah, loads! A footballer plays football for a team. It s a game. It sounds very interesting. You must come to my dinner party tonight and tell me all about it! (Senator leaves scene) Excellent! I ve never been to a Roman diner party before! I wonder what we ll have to eat? Come on, let s go for a swim and a quick massage! (Roman baths scene) The Senator s slave helped and to get

6 Leon Fraya Albert Ronnie Amber Lexie Borner Jakub dressed after their swim. They didn t have the heart to tell him that the 2 togas he dressed them in didn t actually belong to them! (put on togas, leave baths) Where s my toga gone? Outside, they met up with. They told her their news. Did you have a good swim? Yeah, excellent. And we ve been invited to a dinner party! Brilliant! I m starving! Yeah. I can t wait to see what we re having for dinner! I hope it s roast! The Senator s slave showed them the way to the Senator s house where the dinner party was being held. They were amazed at the mosaics on the floor and the marble statues in the rooms. Then remembered how rich Romans didn t have carpets, but instead had mosaics on their floors, which were made of many small pieces of coloured tiles. Wow! Those mosaics must have taken ages to make! This Senator must be really rich! They were shown the way into the dining room, where everyone was lying on their side. Then remembered something he d learned in class. Look! Do you remember how the Romans didn t sit on chairs, but lay on their side to eat? My mum would kill me if I did that at home! (, and recline) A slave came over to them and offered them something to eat. It looked well interesting. They took a bite. I m not sure what this is, but it tastes like chicken! Then remembered the kinds of foods that rich Romans liked to eat. They liked food that was spicy or sweet, and they liked to impress their dinner guests. They sometimes had whole plates of peacock tongues or dormice for their main course! I have a bad feeling this is roast dormouse. The Romans really liked dormouse for dinner. Yuk! It s not so bad really. The Senator s wife came over to talk to the friends. Her

7 Mrs Senator Ada Mrs Senator Ada George Mrs Senator Ada Luke George R Harry Sharp Thea husband had told her that they were footballers, and she wanted to find out more. So tell me about this football game you play. How do you play it? Well, you have a leather ball which you kick. Two teams play against each other. You have to try and score lots of goals in your opponent s net, and then you beat the other team. The bit with the leather ball sounds boring, but the beating at the end sounds interesting. Do you beat them with big sticks? Then remembered that the Romans were very bloodthirsty people. They enjoyed nothing more than going to the Colosseum to watch gladiators fight to the death, or to see someone be thrown to the lions and eaten alive. It s not quite like that. No-one s supposed to get hurt. That s a shame! At the end of the evening, the Senator offered the friends the chance to stay the night in his house as they were from out of town. They decided to accept. That dormouse has given me indigestion! Good night! They were woken up in the morning by a familiar sound. It sounded like s mum calling him. When got to his feet to look out of the window he realised he was back in his own bed, in his own room, in his own house. Thank goodness for that! I m never going to be able to explain to my mum where we ve been! But when he tried to explain, his mum didn t know what he was talking about.
