20 CULTURE 1 In the United States of America Dictionary work 1 Read the article and find these words in your dictionary. create electric lights filming films studio sunlight picture movie Hollywood was created in 1886 by a man called Harvey Wilcox. When he arrived in the area, the only other inhabitants were a few farmers living in adobe (mud) houses. Wilcox was a good businessman and he realised that the area had a lot to offer: a great climate and location (Hollywood is near both the sea and the mountains), as well as lots of space and the advantage of having a city like Los Angeles close by. He drew a map of his new town and started making roads and building schools and churches. By 1900 Hollywood had a population of 500 with its own post office, hotel, newspaper and markets. At the same time the film industry was starting to make its first films. Although electricity had been invented at that time, electric lights were still not strong enough for indoor filming and the studios needed lots of sunlight. Where better to go than Wilcox s new town with its wide open spaces, sunny weather and longer days! Now there are nearly 20 large film studios and many more TV studios in Hollywood that give work to thousands of people every year, and the name Hollywood is synonymous with the movie business CULTURE 1 Film firsts 2 Listen to the CD and write the order in which the following events took place. Then listen again and write the dates before each event.... Gone with the Wind was the first film in colour.... The first studio was opened in Hollywood.... The Jazz Singer was the first talking picture.... The first multiplex was opened.... Thomas Edison opened the first film studio.... The first television was produced.... Dreamworks was the first new studio to open in Hollywood for decades.... The first Oscar ceremony was held.... Kinetoscope was invented by Thomas Edison.... Charlie Chaplin made his first film, The Tramp.... The first video recorder was made by Sony. Did you know? The Oscars, or Academy Awards, are named after one of the Academy s secretary s uncles because she said the statue looked just like her Uncle Oscar.

21 3 Read the text. Choose the best title. a The history of film making b Hollywood a sign of the times c Where is Hollywood? Many people dream of going to visit Hollywood one day. But even people who have never been there have probably seen photos of the famous Hollywood sign. The thirteen big white letters spell out the city s name, high on the hill above it. In the 1920s, before it became famous for film making, Hollywood was just a quiet rural area full of farms. In the early 1920s, film makers began to come to Hollywood to make films. Hollywood was never the same again. Hundreds of actors came there. They were all hoping to make their dreams come true dreams of being rich and famous film stars. In 1923, they put the famous Hollywood sign up on the hill. It said Hollywoodland and had 4,000 lights in it, so that people were able to see it from far away. But sad times were on the way for Hollywood. In 1932, Peg Entwistle, a New York theatre actress, moved t o Ho llywood t o b ecome a f ilm s tar. Unfortunately, Peg wasn t a hit in Hollywood. Feeling very unhappy, she climbed up to the top of the H of the sign one night, and fell to her death. In the 1940s, there wasn t so much film-making success and Hollywood wasn t doing well. There was a war on, and later, film making in Europe began to take away some of Hollywood s business. And the sign showed these troubled times. It began to break. Letters began to fall off. There was a protest about it and nine rich people donated money to Hollywood to repair the sign. The new letters were even higher than before 13.7 m high and are still shining in the night, for everyone to see. 4 Match the questions and answers. Questions 1 What was Hollywood before it became famous for film making? 2 When did people start making films in Hollywood? 3 Why did hundreds of actors come to Hollywood? 4 When did the sign first appear? 5 Why were people able to see it from far away? 6 Why is Peg Entwhistle called The Hollywood Sign Girl? 7 Why were the 1940s sad times for Hollywood? 8 Who saved the sign and how did they do it? Answers a Nine people gave money to repair it. b In c It was a farming area. d She didn t become famous in Hollywood, and as a result, she fell to her death from the top of the sign. e There wasn t so much film making in Hollywood during the war, and the film business in Europe also didn t help. f Because it had 4,000 lights in it. g In the 1920s. h Because they wanted to make their dreams come true.
