2 MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT AND CEO Name the creative industry book and magazine publishing, film and television, music and interactive digital media and you'll see We ve got it going ON! in Ontario. Ours is the third largest entertainment and creative sector in North America, after California and New York. Ontario's cultural media industries bring depth to our quality of life and identity in this province and are recognized internationally. The added dimensions of these vital sectors from an economic standpoint are job creation and their significant contribution to Ontario's economy. Benefits of every kind spin off from the creative industries into other provincial sectors. Ontario Media Development Corporation (OMDC) plays a leading role not only in funding creative media industries at home, but in attracting foreign production to Ontario and showcasing our industries on international stages. We keep an ear to the ground and help nurture an ongoing dialogue with stakeholders as they fit together the many pieces of the creative puzzle and solution. The market for digital content is expanding rapidly, with digital spending expected to account for 33% of global entertainment and media spending by Ontario s cultural media industries are poised to take a leadership role on the world stage, and the time to invest in these industries is now. Convergent changes and growth opportunities are happening across all creative industries. OMDC actively promotes crosssector synergies that are opening the doors of our digital future. Ontario is well placed in the now-global sector of interactive digital media where constant change and innovation set the pace. From consumer magazines, business-to-business publications, trade and professional magazines, publications focusing on cultural production such as the visual arts right through to academic and scientific periodicals, almost half of all Canadian magazines are published in the province. This impressive number continues to grow. With OMDC support, Magazines Canada has created a Digital Newsstand, offering more than 150 titles online. Jeffrey Remedios, President, Arts & Crafts Productions Inc. Joint marketing initiatives with the Canadian Independent Music Association (CIMA) and government agencies assist Ontario labels and their artists to attend international trade shows like MIDEM in Cannes and SXSW in Austin, thus broadening their access to international markets. IDM companies in Ontario are divided into two streams: content creators and content enablers in such areas as software development, digital compression technologies, internet applications and interactive television, among others. Both streams regularly win prestigious national and international awards for their considerable accomplishments. The OMDC's IDM Fund was extremely helpful in assisting DrinkBox Studios in completing our first original game title: Tales from Space: About a Blob. 10 cross-sector partnerships CROSS-SECTOR PROMOTION Ontario's creative industries form a cluster of dynamic opportunity: the growing influence of digital technology over every sector points the way to new platforms and capabilities. OMDC conducts and supports research within and across sectors to support knowledge and innovation and advance cross-sector thinking. Creative collaborations effectively regenerate as they move across sectors to gather increased strength, vitality and capacity. OMDC's own Industry Profiles and funding to industry partners for research grants, projects and showcases help frame some of the dialogue. Creative SYNERGIES: OMDC IS AT AN ADVANTAGE WITH RELATIONSHIPS WITH SIX INDUSTRIES TO MAKE THESE THINGS HAPPEN. OMDC's cross-sector initiatives drive economic development and help support the growth of a common pool of skills, technologies, finance, management and marketing techniques. Marketing, business innovation, capacity building and skills development are the themes of the Entertainment and Creative Cluster Partnerships Fund. Supporting strategic partnerships within the film, television, book, magazine, music, IDM and commercial theatre sectors, projects must demonstrate an ability to develop fresh approaches to the priorities and needs of the cluster. From Page to Screen is an annual OMDC initiative connecting book publishers in one-on-one meetings with film, television and interactive production companies to encourage the screen adaptation of Ontario-published books and vice versa. The initiative has produced a number of book and film options since its inception.
