The Big Blue Sometimes seen merely as entertainment, movies can also be inspirational, regardless of whether they are historical epics or nonsensical comedies. The epiphany may not result directly from the lessons taught, but in the aesthetics, the music or just the general ideas raised by the films. Here is a rather silly example. When I was studying abroad in Australia, I could barely cook those one-pot wonder meals, like beef udon. But simply by watching White Roses, starring Maggie Cheung and Roy Cheung, I learned to cook baked pork chop rice. I cannot recall the plot of that film anymore, but the cooking skill remains. After graduating from university, I worked in the film department at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, and was given the chance to watch an entire Éric Rohmer retrospective. This influential French New Wave filmmaker created works that are indeed love lessons. I was quite young and naive at that time, which made it hard for me to fully appreciate the reserved sentiments of the Korean film Christmas in August. However, sometimes the lessons reside in your subconscious and create brand new life experiences. Now I appreciate the film even more. A trivial conversation moved me lately. One day, out of the blue, a good friend of mine suddenly said, You have to give your best to MOViE MOViE in a very sober tone. This resulted from a rewarding experience watching the documentary The God of Ramen on the channel. Were it not for MOViE MOViE, these buried treasures might never have been seen in Hong Kong. This kind of appreciation keeps us going, to bring more excellent works to the local market. As supply & demand dictates, when there is a good market for these films, viewers will be given more choices. The upcoming MOViE MOViE Cityplaza cinema will showcase both mainstream blockbusters and art-house treasures with the aim of promoting better film culture. It is indeed a challenging aim, but definitely doable with the support of friends, movie lovers and my wonderful colleagues. The trivial things I ve shared above may seem a little too personal. Watching movies is a personal thing after all. Even though a film is capable of moving hundreds of thousands of people, it doesn t concern you if it fails to mean anything to you. 3 NEWS & BITES N : + Film History: Meeting Dr Sun + Sharing Session 2017 MOVIE MOVIE HONG KONG MUSE FEST MOViE MOViE Hong Kong Muse Fest MOViE MOViE At MOViE MOViE, we believe that movies offer not only a visual experience but also a chance to enhance your cultural and historical awareness. In July, MOViE MOViE Muse Fest HK 2017 presented Rippling: Film Crossover Series, offering an insightful weekend of events. On Saturday, we held Film History: Meeting Dr Sun + Sharing Session and on Sunday, Film x Curatorship: The First Monday in May + Post-screening Talk. Hong Kong Muse Fest + Film Curatorship: The First Monday in May + Post-screening Talk MET Saturday s event took place at the Dr Sun Yatsen Museum, where our eager audience was able to learn more about Dr Sun himself. Mr Sunny Chan, the Assistant Curator of the museum, offered enlightening stories about the Dr Sun Yat-sen statue, and shared interesting historical facts before the screening of Meeting Dr Sun began. On Sunday, we screened The First Monday in May at the Hong Kong Heritage Discovery Centre. 4 IN CINEMAS C Manifesto Director Julian Rosefeldt Cast Cate Blanchett IN CINEMAS 14/9 DIRECTOR S STATEMENT Manifesto Dadaists Fluxus Situationist International Futurists Dogma Andre Breton Film Info Julian Rosefeldt s film Manifesto pays homage to the moving tradition and literary beauty of artistic manifestos, ultimately questioning the role of the artist in society today. Manifesto draws on the writings of Futurists, Dadaists, Fluxus artists, Suprematists, Situationists, Dogma 95 and other artist groups, and the musings of individual artists, architects, dancers and filmmakers. Passing the ideas of Claes Oldenburg, Yvonne Rainer, Kazimir Malevich, Andre Breton, Sturtevant, Sol LeWitt, Jim Jarmusch, and other creators through his lens, Rosefeldt has edited and reassembled thirteen collages of artists manifestos. Performing these new manifestos as a contemporary call to action, while inhabiting thirteen different personas among them a school teacher, a puppeteer, a newsreader, a factory worker and a homeless man Academy Award winner Cate Blanchett imbues new dramatic life into both famous and lesser-known words in unexpected contexts. Rosefeldt s film reveals the performative component and the political significance of these declarations. Often written in youthful rage, they not only express the wish to change the world through art but also reflect the voice of a generation. Exploring the powerful urgency of these historical statements, which were composed with passion and conviction by artists many years ago, Manifesto questions whether the words and sentiments have withstood the passage of time. Can they be applied universally? And how have the dynamics between politics, art and life shifted? When I was young I had studied probably like most people interested in art Dada, Fluxus, the Surrealists and the Futurists, but only superficially. A while ago, during the research for another project, I came across two manifestos by the French Futurist poet and choreographer Valentine de Saint-Point and was immediatley set on fire. Two years earlier in Berlin, Cate Blanchett and I had been introduced by a mutual friend during an opening of an exhibition of my film and photo works and very spontaneously the idea was born to do something together. Onreading these manifestos, other texts of famous artists came back to my mind and I suddenly had the idea for our collaborative project. In the following months, I read any manifesto I could find including theatre, dance, film and architecture manifestos. It was exciting to discover that the same ideas appear again and again. And these common ideas all came along with so much energy and utopian enthusiasm. These manifestos were not only texts which were intended to turn art and eventually the whole world upside down and revolutionise it; at the same time they are testimonials about the search for identity, shouted out into the world with great insecurity. So I read the artist s manifesto firstly as an expression of defiant youth, then as literature, as poetry so to say, Sturm und Drang remastered. The writing was beautiful and mesmerizing; I could hear the words as if they were spoken. I realised that they weren t just historical art documents, but the most lively, performable text material. They reminded me more as theatre, and so I began to imagine these manifestos as a performance, liberated from the dust of art history and relocated in the present time. Art history is a derivation of history and we learn from history. Artists, as well as writers, philosophers and scientists, have always been the ones who have dared to formulate thoughts and visions whose consistency had yet to be proven. The Draft Manifesto of the John Reed Club of New York for example, published in 1932, in which a scenario of a capitalist worldorder run out of control is described, reads as if it were written yesterday. We seem to be well advised to read artist manifestos as seismographs of their age. And in a time where neo-nationalist, racist and populist tendencies in politics and media threaten again democracies all over the world and challenge us to defend our allegedly achieved values of tolerance and respect, Manifesto becomes a clarion call for action. The main idea for Manifesto was not to illustrate the particular manifesto texts, but rather to allow Cate to embody the manifestos. She is the manifesto. And it was clear from the beginning that she would become many different persona at once. In the end, Cate played 13 characters: a broker, a conservative mother, a manager, a funeral speaker, a punk, a choreographer, a teacher, a factory worker, a newsreader, a reporter, a puppeteer, a scientist and a homeless man. As we only had 11 days to shoot with her, all in Berlin and its surroundings, we had to produce an average outcome of twelve minutes a day, which is pretty similar to the timeframe of a very cheap TV soap opera. But of course we didn t want to work on the aesthetic level of a TV soap. So we needed a very generous team most department heads have long been a part of our growing art-film family. But most of all we needed a very generous Cate to work under these conditions. It was a tour de force for everybody involved. But certainly Cate outstripped us all with her immeasurable enthusiasm and commitment. MM RECOMMENDS 5

5 DIRECTOR FRANCOIS OZON S STATEMENT Twins The Mothers Psychoanalysis IN CINEMAS C L Amant Double Director François Ozon Cast Marine Vacth Jérémie Renier IN CINEMAS 10/8 This twin-centric erotic psychological thriller from François Ozon marks a welcome return to the frisky pleasures of his early career. Variety O L Amant Double Chloé, a fragile young woman prone to depression, begins psychotherapy and falls in love with her psychiatrist, Paul. Several months later they move in together, but she soon discovers her lover is keeping part of his identity a secret. Official Selection Cannes Film Festival. I wanted to treat the subject of twins as something fascinating, monstrous and artistic. I got the idea of having Chloé work in a museum. Chloé is contaminated by the artwork she s guarding. At the beginning of the film, the pieces in the museum are fairly esthetically pleasing, but as the film progresses they become increasingly organic and monstrous, reflecting Chloé s inner turmoll. I naturally thought of Dead Ringers. I suspect Joyce Carol Oates wrote her book after seeing Cronenberg s film, which is also very organic and preoccupied with gynecology. However in his case the story is told from the point of view of the twins, whereas J.C. Oates focuses on the young woman caught between two brothers. It was important for me to place Chloé at the center of the story, to show her stomach, swelling and hurting her, and illustrate her confusion between eariy pregnancy and a parasitic fetus. The three women in Chloé s life can all be seen as mother figures. Myriam Boyer, who plays the neighbor, is the intrusive, slightly grotesque, devouring mother, a bit of a witch with her taxidermy cat. I ve always loved Myriam Boyer s voice. In no time at all she establishes her character, the only one in the film who brings a little humor and lightness to an otherwise disturbing presence. Jacqueline Bisset is the real mother, the absent mother Chloé mentions at the beginning of the film during her session with Paul. In her fantasy world this maternal figure becomes Mrs. Schenker, a nurse-cumprison warden who cares for her incapacitated daughter at home. Jacqueline Bisset was an obvious choice, with her Anglo-Saxon charm, feline beauty and resemblance to Marine in her facial features, skin tone, freckles and piercing eyes. Dominique Reymond is the clinical mother, the scientist who gives Chloé information about her condition kindly, but without emotional attachment. I love the combination of coolness and empathy Dominique brings to the role. For a long time now I ve wanted to try to capture the experience of a psychoanalytical session on film. Initially Chloé sits across from her shrink, monologuing about her breams, her feelings and emotions, her family... The audience is plunged into her private life and might get nervous: Will this be going on for an hour and a half? I didn t want to confine myseif to the classic analytical setup represented by a neutral, static setting with predefined codes. I sought to capture something more fluid. I wanted the audience to follow Chloé s therapy the same way a psychiatrist might listen to his patients, in a floating way. The visual effects and changing viewpoints in these first sessions almost play against the dialogue. If you Iisten carefully or see the film a second time, you realize everything is said in these first ten minutes. But you don t necessarily hear it. 6 IN CINEMAS MM RECOMMENDS 7

The director and cinematographer brilliantly depict the narrow roads, the dirt and bleakness; and together with actors Jen-Shuo Cheng and Hong-Chi Lee, the movie was nominated for 19 awards, winning 11, including prizes at the Taipei Film Awards and Golden Horse Film Awards for Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Cinematography. Though they have different personalities, they get along very well. However, their relationship suddenly comes to an end as their parents have a falling out over the rent. Sometimes, you just have to get used to the way the adult world works, because that s exactly what life offers you. As an openly gay director, Ira Sachs specialises in presenting the possible connections between people as seen through the lens of sexuality. Keep the Lights On as a semiautobiographical work of the American director and screenwriter Ira Sachs, Keep the Lights On was a Teddy Award winner in 2012, and examines the nature of relationships in an explicit and, to some extent, cruel way. It tells the story of a young gay couple s continuous endeavours to battle each other s imperfections and addictions. Though the film features a gay couple, the struggle the two main characters share could be faced in any romantic relationship, whether homosexual and heterosexual. The couple seeks answers to various questions in life as they grow old together. Over several decades, they struggle to accept each other, while they also struggle to leave each other. As love develops into addiction, will they find a way to quit each other? When the epiphany finally comes, will they still be able to keep the lights on? Love is Strange Ira Sachs Love is Strange continues to expand on the topics of love and relationships. Ben and George have been together for over 39 years, and their recent decision to get married causes some trouble. They have to move out from their apartment when George is fired regarding his homosexual marriage, and stay with different relatives. What changes will this forced separation bring to their relationship? Similarly, Love is Strange pays more attention to depicting relationships as a whole instead of an exclusively same-sex relationship. Though films that deal with queer relationships have been getting more exposure in recent years, the lives of queer seniors are largely underrepresented. 14 DIRECTOR IN FOCUS: AKI KAURISMÄKI Text by Lee Ka Lui & Lulu Liu ( - ) The Other Side of Hope ( ) MOViE MOViE Aki Kaurismäki (1957- ) may still be an unfamiliar name to many Hong Kong viewers. In fact, this Finnish director acquired a reputation comparable to the talented Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar as early as the 1980s. Since 2000, his talent has been even more exposed to the rest of the world. His work in The Man Without a Past was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film Academy Award, followed by The Other Side of Hope winning the Silver Bear for Best Director at the Berlin International Film Festival in You may not believe that Kaurismäki had more than 40 part-time jobs before he finally got his chance to be a director. As a result, his work focuses a lot on the mundane lives of ordinary people, employing a rather simple and direct film language. He worked as a dishwasher, bearer and stevedore among others, and would likely be viewed as an unmotivated young man today, since being inactive is perceived as an original sin nowadays. However, it was precisely this working class that inspired him to create his own movie world. His film language is simple and direct, which demonstrates resilience, the everyday encounters with ordinary people and the capability of black humour. MOViE MOViE proudly presents six of his most stylish works. He hides the boy from the police out of sympathy and plans to raise the necessary funds to send him to London. Kaurismäki touches on many different social issues, including illegal immigration, and marginalised residents.
