DIRECTOR S NOTE As we look ahead into 2019, the IFI, as always, has some exciting and ambitious plans for the New Year, with initiatives planned across our three core activities of exhibition, preservation and education. JANUARY AT THE IFI Colette In the coming weeks, we will be announcing more details around these plans with information on your favourite events and festivals, alongside brand new programming initiatives and strands. We re sure you ll be as excited about our plans as we are! January brings with it all the glamour of awards season, and this month sees the first of the main contenders hitting our screens. The latest offering from Yorgos Lanthimos The Favourite opens on January 1st and picked up five nominations at the recent Golden Globes shortlist announcements including Best Picture, Best Actress (Olivia Colman) and two nods for Best Supporting Actress (both Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone). Leading the pack at the Golden Globes with 6 nominations was Vice from director Adam McKay (with himself nominated for both Best Director and Best Screenplay), including three in acting categories - Best Actor for Christian Bale, Best Supporting Actress for Amy Adams, and Best Supporting Actor for Sam Rockwell. Green Book opens at the far end of the month (January 30th) also with five nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and two acting credits for both Viggo Mortensen (Best Actor) and Mahershala Ali (Best Supporting Actor). There are plenty of other fantastic new films on release, with many also featuring strongly across awards season including Jon S. Baird s funny and heart-warming Stan & Ollie which looks at the twilight years of two of cinema s great double acts; and Beautiful Boy from Felix van Groeningen, with a stunning performance from one of the biggest new names in cinema, Timothée Chalamet. Recent visitors to the IFI French Film Festival may have caught one of the three sold-out screenings of Gilles Lellouche s Sink or Swim starring Mathieu Amalric as a lost family man who joins an all-male synchronised swimming team in this touching comedy. It s now coming back to IFI for a limited release, giving those who missed this silent hit another opportunity to cross it off their lists! We are delighted to once again partner with mental health organisation First Fortnight in January. Screenings over the last few years were met with rapturous response, and this year s selection is equally fascinating. The programme includes the Irish Premiere of the aforementioned Beautiful Boy with Q&A; a screening of Labyrinthine (which explores how art and creativity can be used as a way to cope with psychosis) with the directors Marie de Hert and Ellen Pollard in attendance for a discussion; and Island of the Hungry Ghosts which is the feature debut from Australian documentarian Gabrielle Brady and examines the refugee crisis on Christmas Island, and we will be joined by both the director and one of the people featured in the film - Poh Lin, who works as a trauma counsellor for refugees. This year we re also delighted to be presenting a special family programme of shorts on Sunday 20th which is recommended for those aged 8 and over is certainly shaping up to be a particularly busy one for us here at IFI. I d like to take this opportunity to wish all of our patrons and supporters a Happy New Year, and we look forward to seeing you soon and throughout the year. Ross Keane Director 3

JANUARY 2019 THE FAVOURITE OPENS TUES 1ST 119 mins, Ireland-UK-USA, 2018, Digital Notes by David O Mahony SINK OR SWIM Two rivals vie for the affections of Queen Anne in Yorgos Lanthimos s deliciously caustic black comedy. Lady Sarah Churchill (Rachel Weisz), the Duchess of Marlborough, has long been the trusted companion of the insecure, jealous and physically ailing monarch (Olivia Colman), a position which allows her to manipulate affairs of state to her own ends. Enter Abigail (Emma Stone), Sarah s winsome younger cousin, who has fallen on hard times. Put to work as a scullery maid, the outwardly naive girl soon learns that Sarah s friendship with the queen is of an intimate nature, information which proves decisive as she leverages her position at court, much to the chagrin of the vengeful Churchill. There will be Open Captioned screenings at on Thursday 3rd and on Tuesday 8th. NEW RELEASE NEW RELEASE OPENS TUES 1ST (LE GRAND BAIN) EXCLUSIVELY AT IFI 122 mins, France, 2018, Digital, Subtitled Notes by Marie-Pierre Richard Bertrand, an unemployed family man having a midlife crisis, joins an amateur male synchronised swimming team in this heart-warming comedy. Bertrand is not the only one in crisis, and a bond forms amongst the middle-aged men as they tackle their demons by committing to the most unlikely of public acts. Inspired by a documentary about a group of Swedish synchronised swimmers, actor-director Gilles Lellouche has assembled an all-star cast of non-sculpted bodies, including Mathieu Amalric, Guillaume Canet, Benoît Poelvoorde, Jean-Hugues Anglade and Marina Foïs, for this energetic comedy with a feel-good 1980 s soundtrack. 5

NEW RELEASE JANUARY 2019 AN IMPOSSIBLE LOVE IFI DOC OPENS FRI 4TH (UN AMOUR IMPOSSIBLE) EXCLUSIVELY AT IFI 135 mins, France, 2018, Digital, Subtitled Notes by David O Mahony IFI FRENCH FILM CLUB Tickets for the screening on Tuesday 8th cost just 7.80 for IFI and Alliance Française members. RBG Beginning in 1958, Catherine Corsini s engrossing drama follows small town girl Rachel (Virginie Efira) as she meets and falls for Parisien charmer Philippe (Niels Schneider), and then spends decades of her life dealing with the repercussions of their tumultuous relationship, which has left her a struggling single mother. Rachel is working as a typist in Châteauroux when she begins a romance with Philippe, an intellectual from a wealthy family who refuses to marry her or allow their daughter, Chantal, to bear his family name. As the years pass and Chantal becomes a teenager, Philippe s occasional and aloof presence in their lives grows more unwelcome and manipulative. Adapted from the novel by Christine Angot who recently cowrote Claire Denis s Let the Sunshine In Corsini s assured film boasts a terrific lead performance from Virginie Efira. OPENS FRI 4TH 98 mins, USA, 2018, Digital Notes by Kevin Coyne 6 Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States Ruth Bader Ginsburg has over the course of her illustrious career moved from respected legal practitioner to feminist activist to pop culture icon. Despite the difficulties she faced entering into the legal profession after graduating at the top of her Columbia University class, she spent the 1970s fighting gender discrimination as co-founder of the Women s Rights Project at the American Civil Liberties Union, making significant advances in equal rights for women in the eyes of the law. Now one of the more liberal voices on an increasingly conservative bench, her frequent dissenting opinions are closely examined for indications of possible legislative reforms. However, the film is most valuable for its examination of Ginsburg s origins, her family life, and her extraordinary marriage, offering insight into her motivation and remarkable legacy.

COLETTE NEW RELEASE OPENS FRI 11TH 111 mins, UK-USA, 2018, Digital Notes by David O Mahony STAN & OLLIE The pioneering life of the titular 19th century French literary sensation is brought to the screen in handsome fashion by director Wash Westmoreland (Still Alice, 2014). Beginning in provincial Burgundy, young Sidone-Gabrielle Colette (Keira Knightley) is betrothed to the roguish literary impresario Henry Gauthier-Villars (Dominic West), who goes by the nom de plume Willy. Whisked away to the City of Lights at the height of the Belle Époque, Willy initially encourages her writing, yet takes sole credit for the huge success of her racy Claudine series of novels. An illicit affair with American beauty Georgie offers further creative inspiration as she strives to find her voice and define her identity as an artist. There will be Open Captioned screenings at on Sunday 13th and on Saturday 19th. NEW RELEASE OPENS FRI 11TH 98 mins, UK, 2018, Digital Notes by Kevin Coyne This joy of a film follows Laurel and Hardy, two of cinema s comedy giants, in their twilight years. On what would turn out to be their farewell tour in 1953, a series of performances in the UK and Ireland, though initially modest and met with underwhelming audiences, grows to be a success as public interest and affection is rekindled. However, behind the scenes, old resentments and health problems flare up. Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly inhabit rather than imitate the characters, while Shirley Henderson and a scene-stealing Nina Arianda form their own double-act as the pair s wives. A funny and genuinely heart-warming film, it will leave audiences with a smile on their faces in this perfect tribute to a beloved partnership. There will be Open Captioned screenings at on Wednesday 16th and on Tuesday 22nd. 7

NEW RELEASE JANUARY 2019 BEAUTIFUL BOY NEW RELEASE OPENS FRI 18TH 120 mins, USA, 2018, Digital Notes by David O Mahony MONSTERS AND MEN A devastated father struggles to deal with his son s debilitating addiction to methamphetamines in Belgian director Felix van Groeningen s (The Broken Circle Breakdown) first English-language film, an emotionally charged adaptation of separate memoirs written by the duo. Eighteen-year-old Nic Sheff (Timothée Chalamet) stuns his separated parents David (Steve Carell) and Vicki (Amy Ryan) when his experimentation with drugs lands him in rehab. Nic s subsequent recoveries and relapses are depicted in non-linear fashion; flashbacks to Nic s happy childhood juxtaposed with his spiral into addiction. Van Groeningen elicits a raw performance from Carell, with Chalamet playing an uncomprehending addict blinded to how perilous his situation has become. There will be Open Captioned screenings at on Sunday 20th and on Thursday 24th. OPENS FRI 18TH 96 mins, USA, 2018, Digital Notes by David O Mahony The shooting of an unarmed African American man in Brooklyn by a white police officer forces three men to interrogate their responses to the incident. Deftly utilising a tripartite structure, and avoiding outrage and indignation in favour of nuance and subtlety, the film seamlessly shifts perspective from one protagonist to the next, creating a cohesive image of how a community is impacted upon by racism and police brutality. Manny (Anthony Ramos) records the shooting on his cell phone, and is pressed upon by police to stay quiet. Dennis (John David Washington, BlacKkKlansman) is a conflicted black cop working the case, himself a victim of racial profiling, who must choose where his allegiances lie. High school athlete Zyric (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) begins to question his professional baseball ambitions as he becomes radicalised by the growing protest movement. 8

VICE NEW RELEASE OPENS FRI 25TH 132 mins, USA, 2018, Digital Notes by Kevin Coyne Adam McKay follows The Big Short, his 2015 film on the recent global financial crisis, with this loose biopic of former U.S. Vice-President Dick Chaney. Utilising similar formal and stylistic tics as his previous film, such as frequent breaking of the fourth wall and the unconventional use of cameo appearances, it stars Christian Bale in a typically committed performance, with fine support from, amongst others, Sam Rockwell, Amy Adams, and Steve Carell. From his ne er-do-well beginnings to his rise through Washington power circles, it is an entertaining recounting of events, careful not to characterise its subject as a villain while never erring into making him an overly sympathetic figure. There will be Open Captioned screenings at on Saturday 26th and on Wednesday 30th. GREEN BOOK NEW RELEASE OPENS WED 30TH 130 mins, USA, 2018, Digital Notes by David O'Mahony New York, 1962: when nightclub bouncer Tony (Viggo Mortensen) finds himself out of work, he answers an advert to chauffeur renowned African American classical pianist Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) through a tour of the Deep South where the refined musician will need a measure of protection. Using the Green Book as their guide on the road, which lists establishments that welcome African Americans, the mismatched duo form an unlikely bond as they are confronted by racism in the segregated south. With genuine chemistry, Mortensen and Ali essay their classic odd couple roles with aplomb, both actors relishing the opportunity to play against type. Irresistibly entertaining, Green Book offers a well-timed plea for tolerance and empathy. 9

FIRST FORTNIGHT The IFI is proud to again partner with mental health charity First Fortnight throughout January. LABYRINTHINE BEAUTIFUL BOY THUR 3RD (18.30) WED 9TH (18.15) Labyrinthine tells the story of a man who, after battling for years, developed ways to cope with his psychiatric disorder by means of art, imagination and innovation. Sven is a husband, a father and an artist. He suffers from a bipolar and schizo-affective disorder that caused years of psychotic episodes. This Belgian documentary is an ode to Sven and a reflection on his troubled past and hopeful future. At the same time, it expresses a universal story about living and dealing with psychosis. DIRECTORS: Marie de Hert and Ellen Pollard 53 mins, The Netherlands, 2016, Digital, Subtitled The screening will be followed by a Q&A with Marie de Hert and Ellen Pollard. Eighteen-year-old Nic Sheff (Timothée Chalamet) stuns his parents David (Steve Carell) and Vicki (Amy Ryan) when his experimentation with drugs lands him in rehab. The peaks and troughs of Nic s subsequent recoveries and relapses are depicted in non-linear fashion; flashbacks to Nic s happy childhood are poignantly juxtaposed with his spiral into addiction. Van Groeningen elicits raw performances from Carell as a father who cannot shed crippling feelings of guilt and Chalamet as an uncomprehending addict blinded to how perilous his situation has become. DIRECTOR: Felix van Groeningen 120 mins, USA, 2018, Digital The screening will be followed by a discussion. 10

IFI & TRADFEST 2019 We are delighted to present premieres of two powerful new documentaries about traditional Irish musicians, a compelling supplement to the live music offerings at Tradfest SLÁN LEIS AN gceol (FAREWELL TO MUSIC) SAT 26TH (13.00) STARBOARD HOME SUN 27TH (13.00) This lyrical portrait of a brilliant yet tormented artist follows accordionist Tony MacMahon, one of Ireland s most remarkable traditional musicians, who was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's and is rapidly losing his ability to play. His former skill is revealed through lively archival sequences which demonstrate his immense talent and the great pleasure he derived from performance. Now the loss of his creative voice is slowly killing his spirit and has led him to prepare for his own death through assisted suicide. Cathal Ó Cuaig follows MacMahon to India where he has spent recent winters working on his memoirs and reveals a difficult story of euphoric highs and devastating lows and a long battle with bipolar disorder through which MacMahon tried to use his passion and creativity to turn his darkness into light. DIRECTOR: Cathal Ó Cuaig 52 mins, Ireland, 2018, Digital, Subtitled This screening will be followed by a Q&A with Cathal Ó Cuaig and guests. Featuring the highly successful Starboard Home album and showcase gigs at the National Concert Hall, this documentary celebrates the formative bond between Dublin s port, city and river through music, song and spoken word. The film illustrates the songs, airs and words from Starboard Home in an impressionistic journey from the source of the River Liffey, deep into the heart of the docks. The music, which ranges from electronic minimalism to folk and rock, is performed by key artists in contemporary Irish music, including Bell X1 s Paul Noonan (who curated and produced the album with Gary Sheehan of the NCH), John Sheahan, Lisa O Neill, Cathy Davey, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, Paul Cleary, Duke Special and Gemma Hayes. Director Moira Sweeney has created an aural and visual delight, capturing the often hidden mysteries, stories and histories of the city s port. 14 IRISH FOCUS SHOOTING THE DARKNESS SAT 5TH (15.30) DIRECTOR: Tom Burke 52 mins, Ireland, 2018, Digital Notes by Sunniva O Flynn Q&A Trish Lambe (Gallery of Photography) will host a Q&A with Tom Burke, producer Thomas Kelly and photographer Alan Lewis. A powerful new documentary about the men who unwittingly became war photographers on the streets of their own Northern Irish towns. They did not leave home in search of war and adventure: the violence erupted around them. They expected a career of wedding photography and celebrity photo-calls and instead the images they produced during the worst years of the Troubles would come to define that conflict. The press photographer deals in single images that must distill story, character and context into a single frame which is often more impactful than moving images of the same event. What did it cost these men to take those pictures? What was the value of those images as the conflict raged on for 25 years? These moral and ethical questions are at the heart of this illuminating documentary by Tom Burke (Losing Alaska, The Liberties). IFI & AEMI PROJECTIONS: THE MEMORY-IMAGE TUES 29TH (18.30) EVENT INFO: Various, 51 mins, , Digital and 16mm Curated by aemi & Sarah Durcan MORE INFO For further details see and The moving image comes closer than any other medium to conveying and informing our experience of time and memory. The Memory-Image presents four films ranging from Alain Resnais s famous tracking shots exploring the collective memory housed in France s Bibliothèque Nationale to the Irish premiere of Turner Prize-winning artist Mark Leckey s extraordinary Dream English Kid , a film that acts as a journey into the artist's own past via found footage on the internet. Also including internationally acclaimed shorts by Lucy Raven, Rosalind Nashashibi and Lucy Skaer, this programme highlights the peculiar nature of the relationship between memory and media by fixing our attention on moments and institutions of shared history and experience. Curated by Sarah Durcan in collaboration with aemi, this programme is supported by the Arts Council and NCAD. 14

FROM THE VAULTS THE DEAD SUN 6TH (18.20) DIRECTOR: John Huston 83 mins, UK-USA-Ireland, 1987, 35mm Notes by Sunniva O Flynn Join us for our now annual visit on the Feast of the Epiphany to the household of Misses Morkan as they host New Year s dinner in John Huston s pitchperfect adaptation of James Joyce s The Dead. Set in Dublin in 1904, the mood of the evening is anguished as Gretta (Anjelica Huston) remembers a long-lost love, much to the incomprehension of her husband Gabriel (Donal McCann). John Huston s subtle direction, a wholly distinguished ensemble of Irish actors, and Anjelica Huston and Donal McCann s delicately wrought performances perfectly capture the social atmosphere and emotional nuances of Joyce s original text. This screening is dedicated to film distributor Arthur McGuinness who passed in Scriptwriter/actor Mark O Halloran will introduce this screening. WILD STRAWBERRIES THE WIFE FRI 25TH & WED 30TH (11.00) DIRECTOR: Björn Runge 100 mins, UK-Sweden-USA, 2018, Digital Notes by Alicia McGivern With her performance as the much put-upon wife Joan, behind a pompous Nobel prize-winning author, the Golden Globe nominated Glenn Close is deservedly back in the awards race. Travelling with her strutting husband (Jonathan Pryce) to become the Laureate, Joan is ever supportive, while secretly beginning to question the choices she has made to enable his success. Close is marvellous, stoic and measured, we see her transform from early ambivalence to her own career, to rage when she realises the truth. Wild Strawberries is our film club for over 55s. Tickets: 4.45 including regular tea/ coffee before the event. If you happen to look younger, please don t take offence if we ask your age. 15

NIGHT OF IDEAS 16 SUNRISES THUR 31ST (18.00) (16 LEVERS DE SOLEIL) DIRECTOR: Pierre-Emmanuel Le Goff 117 mins, France, 2018, Digital, Subtitled On November 17th 2016, French ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet took off for his first mission in space. For six months, 450 kilometres from Earth, where the world seems to fade into the unknown, a dialogue is established between the astronaut and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry s visionary classic The Little Prince, which he brought with him on the space station. This Irish premiere will be followed by a panel discussion on the objectives of space exploration featuring the film director Pierre-Emmanuel Le Goff, Science and Space communicator Dr Niamh Shaw & Prof Lorraine Hanlon of UCD, moderated by Elaine Burke from Silicon Republic. Presented in collaboration with: HAVE YOU SEEN MY MOVIE? TUES 1ST (18.15) DIRECTOR: Paul Anton Smith 124 mins, UK, 2016, Digital, Colour and Black and White Notes by Kevin Coyne As the new cinema going year begins, we present director Paul Anton Smith s filmic love letter to the experience. A supercut of over a thousand scenes from films in which characters go to the cinema, it follows a roughly chronological path, from the ticket queue to the experience of sitting in a darkened cinema to the exodus of patrons following the feature presentation. Smith, who worked as assistant editor on Christian Marclay s The Clock (2010), has brilliantly constructed the film so that characters from different films in different decades are seen to interact, often to humorous effect, or, in one wonderful sequence share the experience of watching Fred and Ginger dance. Featuring clips from every genre, it serves as a welcome reminder of just how magical seeing a great film on the big screen with an audience can be. 16

A devastated father struggles to deal with his son s debilitating addiction to methamphetamines in this emotionally charged adaptation of separate memoirs written Nic and David Sheff. Eighteen-year-old Nic (Chalamet) stuns his separated parents David (Carell) and Vicki (Amy Ryan) when his experimentation with drugs lands him in rehab. 18 THE BIGGER PICTURE THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE MON 28TH (18.15) DIRECTOR: John Ford 123 mins, USA, 1962, Digital, Black and White Notes by Kevin Coyne SPECIAL GUEST The screening will be introduced by broadcaster Dave Fanning. This month s selection sees John Wayne, James Stewart, Lee Marvin and Vera Miles star in one of John Ford s greatest Westerns. As the film opens, Senator Ransom Stoddard (Stewart) and his wife (Miles) arrive in a small frontier town to attend the funeral of local rancher Tom Doniphon (Wayne). Their connection is revealed through flashback to a time when Stoddard, then a young and idealistic attorney, began his political career after he and Doniphon encouraged a beleaguered townspeople to stand up to the ruthless and sadistic outlaw Liberty Valance (Marvin). Set in an era when the Wild West was on the cusp of being tamed, and when the role of the free press and democratic processes were becoming an integral part of broader American society, it has been described by The New Yorker s Richard Brody as the greatest American political movie."
