1 MATH MANIAC - MAX MILLIONS By: Cristina Rego - Hillside School, Naugatuck Ticket please Ah, the Palace Theater is a perfect place filled with entertaining acts but also filled with architecture everywhere you go. The palace theatre was built in 1920 and opened in 1992 until And it was built by Sylvestor Poli. Most importantly it s amazing back ground that the Palace Theatre has. So let s get this show rolling Too start off, the Palace Theater is so entertaining. Moreover, you can even learn from some of the shows. For example, Math Manic teaches you about how easy math is. The smart guy with the crazy hair says how special zero is because anything times zero is zero. Also, he reviewed our thousands places and got a lot of volunteers to say what value was next and they got a million dollars after (the money wasn t real sadly). Most entertaining are the actors; they can be very funny with the audience. When they went out to pick volunteers, he would ask for their names and then gave them random different names! When we got to interview him we got to ask questions but also fool around with him. We studied his hair and found out it was a wig (a very colorful one). Not only that but, this theatre is filled with absolutely beautiful artwork and filled with architecture. Like, the ceiling has gold foil all around it and is about 60,000 square feet wide; imagine how long that took those construction workers. The stairs are real marble but the walls kind of look like real marble but it s just paint; in other words to say it, the walls are faux (fake). Back a few years ago, the floor had a huge poster on the floor of a movie ad. A very popular show was called Vaudeville. In the weather lobby there are eagles on the walls of a sign of peace and war. There are a lot of types of art like Greek. The theatre is shaped like a megaphone really and in anywhere in the theatre you can hear the person talking on the stage! The parabolic dome catches sound and is 65 feet long. The stage is one

2 of the biggest ones in Waterbury; it is about 5,000 feet wide and 7 stories high (70 feet). There are sprinklers in the theatre, if there was a fire be ready to get wet because they would all pop out water. Lastly, is the amazing background of the Palace Theater. Surprisingly there once was a fire in the Palace Theater in front of the door way and all the details had to be remade cause everything was burned down. A company was willing to pay 30 million dollars to re-open this wonderful theatre. Right under the theatre a river flows; well that s why they call WATERbury, and they have cracks on the floors but don t worry you won t fall in! Some of the rooms in the Palace Theater are the green room. In the green room the actors just stay there and wait till there performing, they can hang out there, watch TV, and eat. There is also the wig room where they comb, fix, and put on the wigs. Also there is a wardrobe room. If any actor ripped their costumes or something wrong with their clothes they go there and get them fixed. For sure the Palace Theatre is such an amazing place to go to. We even got to interview him and here are some questions he answered, he says he liked math since second grade and loved mostly patterns. He has started performing in 2006 and never gets nervous because he s cool like that. Also he doesn t do Broadway shows but he thinks of his own ideas. He memorizes his lines because he is always practicing and he loves math more than performing but he also loves math and science. He says the answers to the kids when they volunteer because they get nervous and forget the answers. He loves to do shows with math cause kids like anything with magic. PALATIAL NEWS - THE MATH MANIAC SHOW, WITH MAX MILLIONS By: Raymond Lucarelli - Grade 6, Hillside School, Naugatuck Opened in 1922, the Palace Theater in Waterbury, CT is admired by many people across the state. It is a magnificent building. The Palace Theater wasn t always called that. It started out as, The Poli Palace, named after Sylvester Z. Poli. But, a lot has changed since then. One of the biggest problems for the Palace Theater was the weather room. It was a room in the theater that back then, had no walls and was exposed to weather. One day there was a fire near the Palace Theater. To prevent the Palace Theater from burning down if the fire spread; they had to spray the whole building with water. The only problem is most of the decorations were made out of plaster. When plaster gets wet, it falls apart.

3 After the fire was put out near the Palace Theater, the destroyed plaster was devastating. All of the fine detail put into it was destroyed. But, luckily it got restored. Shockingly, it costs $1,000,000 to make in 1922, and $30,000,000 to restore now! The Palace Theater was then opened in 2004 after four years of restoration. On May 7, 2013, students were chosen to visit the Palace Theater for a journalism program. The students that went got to see a show, and write an article about it. Their articles will then be published. In this case, the show was, The Math Maniac Show, with Max Millions. It is a delightful and hilarious math show teaching kid s math through fun games and activities. Kids are having so much fun, they forget that they are actually doing math! It is an excellent show! After the show, we got to interview Max Millions himself! Here are some of the interview questions and answers Q: When did you start your show? A: the year the Palace Theater got re-opened! Q: What is your favorite type of math? A: Patterns! Q: Do you like math or performing better? A: Math! Going to the Palace Theater for the journalism program was a great and unforgettable experience. If you like writing and theater, then I would defiantly recommend this program. I had so much fun, and hope I can participate in the program again. THE MATH MANIAC SHOW By: Autumn Burgos - Grade 5, Maloney Magnet School, Waterbury Ninety one years ago, a man named Sylvester Poli built the Poli Palace for one million dollars, but unfortunately it closed in 1987 as a hotel. Luckily in 2000 it reopened, but they had to re-do the

4 ceiling and all the intense detailing because next door to the building there was a fire and they splashed water around the Palace to prevent it from catching on fire. The certain material that the ceiling was made with was destroyed. Instead of the Poli Palace, they re-named the theater as the Palace Theater. Since they remodeled the Palace, they wanted to keep a couple of things; like the original railing, the self-painted wallpaper, and the marble stairs are still there. So what was the price to re-do the Palace? The state of Ct gave 30 million dollars to fix the Palace, which is 29 million dollars more than its original cost. Max Millions, the math lover of all time, had a totally fantastic show, with magical math, and a lovely assistant. The show was very exciting; personally since I went on stage as an assistant during the show. I think he is a really funny guy! Max Millions gives you short cuts with your math if you struggle in the subject, whether its multiplication or addition! Max includes magic in his show including number guessing and making money appear or disappear. What s really surprising is that if you re lucky enough to be an assistant, in return for your help you get a Max Million s million dollar bill. THE MATH MANIAC SHOW By: Olivia Pawlik - Grade 5, Maloney Magnet School, Waterbury Are you looking for a great experience at Waterbury s own, Palace Theater? Well if you go see Max Millions and his show, The Math Maniac Show you ll defiantly enjoy it! Max, a math man, is CRAZY for math! He even thinks of his own ideas for his performances! Max likes to make math fun by picking volunteers from the audience and performs math with magic. If you get the question correct, he gives you a one million dollar bill! His shows are for upper and lower levels. He even teaches you cool ways to check your math answers. You will really learn a lot! The Palace Theater has some very rich history. The building was built in 1922 and has been successful for 91 great years! But, in 1987, the interior was destroyed because it was drenched with water do to a fire next door. Many years later they redid the entire inside and it reopened in 2000! It took 30 million dollars to fix! I totally recommend seeing Max Millions at the amazing Palace Theater!

5 THE MATH MANIAC SHOW By: Kayleigh Theroux - Grade 3, Algonquin School, Prospect It all started with a man who was from Italy. His name is Mr. Poli. He loved to design buildings. In 1920 he helped to design the Palace in Waterbury, CT. It cost 1million dollars. In 1922 the Palace Theater opened! On the ceiling of the theater there is gold foil and lots of beautiful designs. The Palace was built to look like a castle. The building next door caught on fire many years later. The Palace didn t burn, but some things got ruined from water and smoke. In the early 2000 s the Palace was re- built. The Palace re-opened in It cost $30,000,000 to repair the Palace. On May 7, 2013 we went to see the show Math Maniac. Max Million was the star of the show. Max was very funny. During the show Max pulled people from the audience to help him out with the show. After the show, we got to meet Max in person. We asked him questions about his life as an actor. Max was very nice. And not to mention Mrs. Streeter was very good with explaining things that we were not so sure about. THE MATH MANIAC SHOW By: Jose Calles - Grade 5, Maloney Magnet School, Waterbury I am Jose Calles and I am a member of Tiger Talk (my school newspaper). On May 7, 2013, two other reporters and I got to go to the Palace Theater for a very special experience. When we arrived at the Palace, we were greeted by our tour guide, Karen Streeter. Then we learned some of the Palace s fascinating history. For example, it was founded by Sylvester Zefferino Poli in 1922 (it is now 91 years old) and it was called the Poli Palace. Also, it closed down in 1987 due to a fire next door and reopened in Then we got a tour of the Palace. We went downstairs and saw the paintings that the main actor of a show paints and the rest of the cast signs. We also saw the dressing rooms with large mirrors and brilliant lights.

6 Then, the part I d been waiting for--the show! Max Millions uses magic in his show, like making a million dollar bills into a one million dollar bill. He also chooses volunteers from the audience to help him. Once you finish the helping, he gives you a one million dollar bill! He shows great techniques to help you learn. Overall, it is a fun and educational show. After the show, we even got to interview him. He started his show in He liked math since second grade and thought since he was good at math, he could teach others in a fun way. His favorite type of math is patterns. He s so smart, he even thinks of his own ideas by looking through our school curriculum. This was a great experience and I would love to do it again. PALACE THEATER By: Jacob Theroux - Grade 4, Community School, Prospect On my tour of the Palace Theater I had a great time. Let me tell you some history of the Palace. A man named Mr.Poli opened it in 1920 and there was one box office and the room that it was in was opened to the weather so it was either hot or cold. It was only open until All the pieces that were put on the ceiling were plastic, so if they got wet they would fall off. One day there was a fire next door and the firemen came in and soaked everything and all of the decorations came off the ceiling. After years of it not being touched, the state gave them $30,000,000 dollars to reopen it. There used to be a hotel there, but now they call it the grand foyer. Also, when they redid the Palace they wanted it to be fit for a king. The right stairs are from when it first opened. They just flipped them over. In the grand foyer there are cracks in the floor because there is a river under it. The ceiling is covered in gold foil and the stage is 5,000 square feet. The stage has 56 pullies.
