It takes place a long time ago in a land that s far, far away. In some fairy tales, the prince has to fight the evil dragon. This story is a little different. 10B Song Lyrics This is a fairy tale, kids. Listen up. Once upon a time, a couple years back, In the days that came before today, the past, Not right here and now; no, that s the present, This was years ago in a land that s different. In a castle by a lake there lived a prince named Charles Who didn t feel great. He was lonely, sad to be alone, Making bologna sandwiches in his home. There was no one in the castle except Charles, So he spent every night studying the stars. That s astronomy; he loved it the most, Charles looked at the stars with his own telescope, A tool you can use to see things that are far, Like the tops of mountains or even some stars. Charles was a scholar, a very good student, Someone who studies hard; he never felt stupid. Now in this land, there lived a dragon named Tessa, She was a girl dragon, but her family had left her. And now Tessa, she didn t know where to live, No home for the dragon kid. She d sleep in fields; land with no trees, And drink from the little rivers and the streams. I guess Tessa and Charles will be sad to the end, Living their lives with no friends 75

Now Charles didn t even believe in dragons, Until one evening, when he was hanging out In his castle looking at stars, He saw something big with wings and all. It was Tessa the dragon; she stopped to say hi, And Charles asked her what it was like to fly. Tessa said, Um, well, would you like to try? Hop on my back, and we ll touch the sky. Charles was slightly scared, scared a little bit, But it had been his dream to fly since he was a little kid. So they went for a ride like, Wow, Swooping in and out of the clouds. And what happened next? From that day on, they were BFFs, Best friends forever, always together, Alone they were lonely; now they were better. They put on their own puppet shows; imagine that, Cracking funny jokes that would make them laugh. To them, toys were a luxury, Like nice things that they didn t really need. True, they d give a gift, or present, or two, But they didn t live like some presidents do. No, they lived a simple life to the end, I guess you never know where you can find a friend. Paulo loved to study astronomy. He learned a lot about outer space. field (noun) A field is a big, open area that has no trees. It s usually used for playing games or growing things. The class played baseball in the field next to the school. lonely (adj) When you re lonely, you feel sad about being by yourself. Sumi moved to a new school. She felt lonely and missed all of her friends. luxury (noun) A luxury is something that you enjoy but don t really need. Luxuries usually cost a lot of money. Matt and his dad watched movies on DVD at home. Matt s dad said that going to the movie theater was a luxury. past (noun) Everything that happened before right now happened in the past. The past is all time before the present. In the past, Sierra and Sydney fought a lot. Now they are very good friends. (adverb/preposition) If you go past something, you go beyond it. Denise and her mom drove past the store. They had to turn around and go back. present (noun) 1. A present is a gift. It is something that you give to someone. Sonya got a lot of presents for her birthday. 2. The present is the time right now. It is not the future or the past. At present, Maya is sick. Her mom hopes that she will be better tomorrow. (adj) If you are present in a place, you are there. The teacher told the kids to make sure they are present in school on the day of the test. scholar (noun) A scholar is someone who studies a subject or knows a lot about it. In my town, they have a camp for young scholars. Each summer, the kids at the camp get to study nature. slight (adj) Slight means small in importance or number. Nadji only made a slight mistake on his math test. He just wrote one of his numbers backward. 77

My brother and I rolled up our jeans and walked across the stream. (verb) If something streams, it moves like water. Telephones have changed a lot over the years. The person who invented the telephone was Alexander Graham Bell. Mr. Bell was a teacher of the deaf. He helped teach children who could not hear. He taught them how to speak. Mr. Bell was also a scholar of science. He was always studying ways to help people communicate. In the year 1876, he introduced the world to the telephone. Now, almost everyone has at least one phone. Presently, there are two types of popular phones that people use. One type of phone is connected to wires at your home. These are called home phones. If you have a home phone, you need to be in your house, or very close to your house, to make and receive calls. There are also phones that you can take with you wherever you go. These are called cell phones. If you are using a cell phone, you can be almost anywhere to make or receive a call. With a cell phone, you can make a call from the middle of a field. A lot of cell phones also let you do cool things like 80
