2 The Will Rogers Institute is a program that perpetuates the memory of Will Rogers by promoting and funding medical research of cardiopulmonary diseases, purchasing neonatal ventilator equipment for medical facilities across the country and by educating the general public on topics of health and fitness. 500,000 babies are born prematurely each year.* That s one in every eight babies who come into this world in need of immediate intensive care. Seeing such desperate need for help, members of the Will Rogers Institute (WRI) created the Neonatal Ventilator & Pulmonary Program. Since the program s inception in 2006, its mission has always been clear: To be the national leader in providing grants for the purpose of ventilator equipment and critical care pulmonary services to hospitals in the United States. To date, the program has committed $ 2.3 million to 29 facilities nationwide, dedicating $400,000 in 2011 alone. One of the highlights of our 2011 program was saving the lives of conjoined twins born at Le Bonheur Children s Hospital in Memphis, TN, thanks to neonatal equipment purchased for the hospital through the Neonatal Ventilator & Pulmonary Program. *Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 24,000,000 adults and children suffer from asthma in the U.S.* While this is an alarming statistic, even more alarming is the fact that many people are unaware that the numbers are so high. Struggling to breathe, 24 million Americans cope with this disorder every day, yet very few know about it. To help raise awareness of this debilitating condition, WRI teamed up with Emmy Award-winning actor, Bryan Every summer since 1936, in movie theaters across the country, WRI runs a special fund-raising event the Summer Theatrical Fund-Raising Campaign in order to raise money for pulmonary research, medical school fellowships, ventilators and health education. The 2011 campaign featured Golden Globe Award-winning actress Sarah Jessica Parker. To date, the program has raised over $100 million and continues to look for new and Neonatal grants Research fellowships Cranston to create a PSA about asthma. The spot was a tremendous success and was distributed across various channels, including 1,678 television plays, 2,763 movie theater screen plays, 516 TrailerVision kiosks placements (located in movie theater lobbies), and reached a total audience of 1.4 million people via the Internet and social media outlets. As a result of the PSA, just under 150,000 visited the WRI website and requested information. *Centers for Disease Control and Prevention 76-year-old WRI tradition has raised more than $100 million. To be eligible one must be a member of the Will Rogers Motion Picture Pioneers Foundation, give a minimum of $50 per year for 10 years and be of retirement age. Currently, we have over 1,600 members, with an average age of 74 years old. This program exists thanks to the generosity and full cooperation of our exhibitor partners. Since 1947, the Motion Picture Pioneers Assitance Fund has honored an individual(s) as Pioneer of the Year. The honor has become an annual mainstay in the motion picture industry and attracts members from every area of the community. The 2011 Pioneer of the Year dinner honoring Dick Cook was celebrated at the first annual CinemaCon, the official convention of the National Association of Theatre Owners Dick Cook, 2011 Pioneer of the Year and Tim Allen (NATO). The gala raised over $1 million for the MPPAF. Comedian and actor Tim Allen hosted the festive evening while ventriloquist, singer and impressionist Terry Fator entertained 2,300 guests. This event would not have been possible without the support and cooperation from NATO and CinemaCon, which allowed us to execute a first-time-ever fund raising dinner as a scheduled event at an industry convention.

Will Rogers The Bernie Myerson Scholarship Fund The WRMPPF is committed to helping students pursue their goal of higher education through the Bernie Myerson Scholarship Fund. This fund was established in 2003 as a tribute to our long-time board member and the former president and chief executive officer of Loews Theaters. Each year since, the WRMPPF offers scholarships for up to $3,000 to qualified students who will attend an accredited college, a vocational/technical school or university full time during the upcoming academic school year. The scholarship is intended to provide financial support for employees of the exhibition, distribution and trade services industry and their children who exhibit financial need. To date, the WRI has spent almost $50,000 providing students with the opportunity to attend college. The 2011 scholarship recipients were Scott Morin (Tri-City Cinema 8, MI), Jo Ann Scott (Carmike Cinemas, IA) and Andrew AJ Young (Harkins Tempe Marketplace, AZ). Congratulations to last year s winners. Dr. Anthony S. Fauci: Eminent Scientist Receives WRI Award for Pulmonary Research The 2011 Will Rogers Institute s Annual Award for Outstanding Contributions to Lung Research was awarded to Dr. Anthony S. Fauci. He is the fourth recipient of the prestigious $50,000 prize and joins three other esteemed members of the medical research community. The annual award is presented to an eminent scientist for a body of extraordinary and meritorious research contributions to the advancement of lung health. Dr. Fauci is the director of the National Dr. Anthony S. Fauci including HIV/AIDS, sexually transmitted diseases, illness from potential agents of bioterrorism, tuberculosis, malaria, autoimmune disorders, asthma and allergies. Early in 2011 Dr. Fauci met with the WRI board of directors, where he accepted the award and gave a special presentation regarding his clinical work and research activities. It is with the help of individuals like Dr. Fauci and our other award recipients that we can better understand the complexities of the human Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, where he oversees an extensive research portfolio of basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose and treat infectious and immune-mediated illnesses, lung and make the necessary medical advancements to save the lives of those affected by pulmonary disorders. For a list of past award recipients, visit WRI 2011 American Association for Health Education Fellowship Diana Reindl In 2005 the WRI teamed up with the American Association for Health Education (AAHE) to award a fellowship to a graduate student who has completed at least one year of doctoral study in a health education program at an accredited college/university in the U.S. or a U.S. territory. A history of work related Diana Reindl is the 2011 AAHE Will Rogers fellowship recipient. Diana is receiving her PhD in health education from the University of Toledo, OH. Her focus is studying, researching and advocating tobacco-control policies on college campuses. She assisted in authoring Strategies for Implementing a Tobacco-Free Campus Policy, which has been accepted for publication in the Journal of American College to research in lung health or a commitment to conduct lung health research during the course of his or her doctoral studies is required. The student must have a current minimum overall grade point average of 3.5 on a 4.0 scale. Health, and she has presented at both the state and national levels on tobacco control. So far there have been six fellowships awarded to students like Diana, helping them make a difference through their research endeavors.
