Departmental Professional Development In this section, please provide details about your department s emphasis for professional development during this year. Please limit your response to the space provided in the text box below. The music department faculty prepared and presented the Faculty Recital on September 16 th, The primary focus of professional development for the faculty is centered on the study and preparation of this repertoire and collaborative performance. Departmental Advising Plan & Outcomes In this section, please describe your department s advising plan and outcomes for this year. Please limit your response to the space provided in the text boxes below. The Music Department Full-time Faculty are assigned approximately twenty music majors each as their primary advisees. The faculty schedule appointments each semester to examine the academic plans of these students and determine the best options for semester enrollment. Each semester the Music Department holds an academic advising day where all full-time faculty meet with the music majors and assign them to their classes for the coming semester. This collaborative approach to advising allows the faculty to interact regarding the student s academic progress in core music classes and determine the best course choices for the coming semester. The academic advising days were held on October 4 and March 1. Students that were unable to attend the scheduled academic advising days met with Kevin Dobreff later on in the semesters.

This hands-on approach to academic advising allows the music department to carefully guide each of our majors toward successful completion of their program. It also allows us to develop good working relationships with our students and helps them understand how much we value their success. Program Accreditation Updates In this section, please provide details regarding any program accreditation or re-accreditation that occurred this past year, if applicable. Please limit your response to the space provided in the text boxes below. The Music Department received notification from the National Association of Schools of Music in January that the commission on community college accreditation had accepted our progress report on the renovation of the music center. The commission determined that the renovation of the building and specifically the work completed to redesign the recital hall had met the specific standards required for completion of the re-accreditation process. The Music Department continues to hold accreditation in good standing with NASM and is scheduled for another accreditation review during the academic year. GRCC continues to be the only community college in Michigan with NASM accreditation.

Learning Outcomes Assessment Data & Findings on Past Year s Projects In this section, please summarize your department s assessment work for this year, outlining the Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs) or Institutional Learning Outcomes (ILOs) assessed, the assessment measure, the findings, and the improvements planned based on the findings. Please limit your response to the space provided in the text boxes below. Critical Thinking and Harmonization at the Keyboard Assessment Program Learning Outcomes: o Students will be able to harmonize a melody using primary and secondary chords and secondary dominants and/or secondary leading tone chords. Institutional Learning Outcome: o Students will be able to gather and synthesize relevant information, evaluate alternatives, and implement creative and effective solutions. Direct measure: final examination harmonization and student s written explanation of choices made. Project description: Given a melody and a set of harmonic parameters, students harmonize a melody at the keyboard that is logical within a system of tonal harmony. Students are restricted to chords they have learned about in both music theory and piano techniques classes. Findings: o Many students demonstrated a very high level of harmonization but their reasons were based on the harmonization sounding good, and not based on theoretical thinking! Many students rushed to complete the written part of the assignment too quickly, but they may have actually spent a lot of time on the actual harmonization. Improvements planned for the coming year: o Implement more sight-harmonization o Require fewer out of class assignments in order to give more attention in class to harmonization.

Part II: Plan for Upcoming Year Part II is intended to provide a guide for your department s plans for the upcoming year with regards to the following: Operational Goals and/or Plans, Curriculum Goals and/or Plans, Learning Outcomes Assessment Plans, and Advising Plans. When answering the questions or completing the sections below, please consider the main points/highlights of each category. A. Operational Goals and/or Plans What are your departmental goals and plans for ? Monitor the space use in the newly renovated music building. o Examine the Raider-card entry logs for students entering the practice room corridor after 5:00 p.m. to determine if the number of students making use of the renovated facility has increased in relation to previous years where this data was collected manually. o Collect data on facility rental and space usage by outside organizations to determine if the usage increases now that the renovation has been completed. o Continue to collect data on concert attendance and compare overall attendance to the last three years of collected data. o Create an online survey for our patrons to complete following their attendance at any concert or recital in our newly renovated recital hall. Use this data to assist in improving the overall aesthetic of the music center. o Monitor enrollment in music classes to determine if the renovation of the music center positively impacts enrollment in all music courses but also specifically musical ensemble participation. o Implement the newly developed space rental policy for those individuals and organizations that would like to lease space in our building. o Develop the programming for the Wenger Acoustic Banners in the recital hall. o Develop a protocol for preparing the recital hall for performance In collaboration with facilities, create the procedure and steps for the following: The patron seating will be deployed The acoustic banners will be raised/lowered according to a previously determined setting The Orchestral Shell Doors will be opened and locked in place. The Screen will be lowered/raised. Additional audience seating will be set up within the recital hall.

Implement the newly designed instrument checkout procedure. Increase the amount of student travel to allow more ensembles to travel to area High Schools for presentation of recruiting concerts. Increase the level of financial underwriting that we receive for the International Guitar Series and the Kent Philharmonic Orchestra. o Examine the possibility of collaborating with the Spectrum Health Foundation to allow them to publicize our concerts as fundraising activities for research in exchange for a share of the concert revenue. Develop and implement an alumni recital series where we feature performances by our music program alumni. o This is already underway for the academic year with four recitals already scheduled.

What new information from external sources has influenced your planning for next year? Conversations with area high school instrumental and choral directors have influenced our decision to provide more recruiting concerts to area schools. Are your goals targeting any Perkins or Key Performance indicators? If yes, please explain. No.

What resources do you need to accomplish your departmental goals for the upcoming year? Data provided by IT showing Raider Card Entry Logs. Possible mid-year budget request to support additional student travel. Technical Support from the Wenger Corporation Do you need support from other departments to accomplish these goals? If yes, please explain. Cooperation and support from IT to assist with data gathering from Raider Card Entry logs Collaborative support from facilities in preparing the recital hall for the increased number of concerts and recitals that will be held during the academic year. Support from Facilities in monitoring the HVAC and humidity control in the Music Center. These systems will critically affect the musical instruments in the building and the success of the faculty and students in teaching and learning.

Do you need professional development in order to accomplish these goals? If yes, please explain. At this time, no. For each of your departmental goals/plans/projects, please list the name of the lead faculty member(s) involved. Monitor the space use in the newly renovated music building. o Kevin Dobreff and Kathy Kolehouse Instrument Checkout procedure o Kathy Kolehouse and Jared Staub Student Travel Increase for Recruitment o Steve Barton, Libor Ondras, Jared Staub, Brian Morris Increase the level of financial underwriting that we receive for the International Guitar Series and the Kent Philharmonic Orchestra. o Jonathan Marshall and Libor Ondras Develop and implement an alumni recital series. o Kevin Dobreff

For each of your departmental goals/plans/projects, please provide a brief timeline for completion. I anticipate that each of these goals will require the entire year with possible multiyear extension needed.

B. Curriculum Goals and/or Plans What are your departmental curriculum development goals and plans for ? Design and create the first of two introduction to music therapy courses with the collaboration of the Music Therapy Faculty of Western Michigan University and the music therapists of the Franciscan Life Process Center. Offer MUS 117, Jazz Theory 1 during the winter semester, This course has run only once before, with great success however, the faculty team that designed and implemented the course is no longer with us. An adjunct faculty specialist will teach the course. Evaluate the student learning outcomes for MUS 118, Jazz Arranging, by involving this course in the review and revision process. Continue the development of an online music fundamentals course for a student population that is unable to successfully complete Basic Music Theory MUS 112. Carefully observe how the new Curriculum Pathway for music is implemented and monitor those students that are identified in this pathway.

Click here to enter text. Review of Department s Curriculum Transferability Please note: this section should be completed by all SAS Departments, Business, and CIS. Using transferability data provided by Instructional Support, please summarize your perceptions of how courses in your department transfer to our four-year university partners and how this understanding will impact your curriculum goals for the upcoming year. Kevin Dobreff has worked closely with Matthew Novakoski over the past year to carefully assess the transferability of our program courses. At this time our articulation agreement with Western Michigan University and transfer guides with GVSU, EMU, and CMU clearly indicate that our core music courses in music theory, aural comprehension, group piano, music history, and applied study, transfer seamlessly to these senior institutions.

Click here to enter text Academic Department

What new information from external sources has influenced your curriculum development planning for next year? Western Michigan University has recommended that music students not complete the MTA. Western Michigan University has also recommended that Music Therapy transfer students delay enrollment in a lab science until transferring to WMU. Matt Novakoski and I are continuing conversations with GVSU to iron out some lack of clarity in the transfer of applied music courses and ensemble participation. Are your curriculum development goals targeting any Perkins or Key Performance Indicators? If yes, please explain. NO.

What resources do you need to accomplish these curriculum development goals? Continued support from Matt Novakoski and Katie Daniels. Do you need support from other departments to accomplish these curriculum development goals? If yes, please explain. At this time, NO. For each of your departmental curriculum development goals/plans/projects, please list the name of the lead faculty member(s) involved. 26 D. Departmental Advising Plan for In this section, please outline your department s advising plan for the upcoming academic year. Please limit your response to the space provided in the text box below. The music department program director meets with all incoming music majors and certificate students for their initial academic advising appointment. At this time the student s complete the music theory and piano pretests. Students are then enrolled in classes based on their ability to begin college level music study. The program director then assigns all music majors and certificate students as advisees to one of the full-time music faculty members. These professors meet with each of their advisees at least once during both the fall and winter semesters. In addition, each semester the music department holds an academic advising day prior to the dates for open enrollment. All music students are required to attend this event where the full-time music faculty evaluate their academic standing and they are subsequently enrolled in the proper classes for the next semester. Part III: Faculty & Staff Accomplishments/Awards Part III is intended to provide a space to share the accomplishments, awards, and/or accolades achieved by faculty and staff in your department during the course of this past year. Libor Ondras - granted tenure Timothy Heldt promoted to full professor Yelena Wells received the Excellence in Education Award for adjunct faculty. Sheryl Iott received a Fulbright award to lecture in South America The music faculty presented a faculty recital early in September that was a wonderful representation of their collaborative skills as musicians. Libor Ondras and Brian Morris collaborated once again on a duet recital in January. Kathy Kolehouse remained focused and undaunted by the particularly horrible working conditions that she had to endure for the entire year during our renovation.

Libor Ondras conducted the first ever-staged opera production with the Great Lakes Chamber Orchestra. The production of Carmen by Georges Bizet was very well received and resulted in an invitation for Libor to serve as opera director at the Bay View Summer Festival for the summer 2017 festival. Debora DeWitt served as a judge for competitions held at Aquinas College, Great Lakes Christian College, Hope College, Grand Valley State University. Jared Staub- served as a judge for the Indiana State Music Association Organizational contest on March Kevin Dobreff completed his final term as a member of the commission on community college accreditation for the National Association of Schools of Music. Timothy Heldt passed his re-certification for updating his Avid Certified Instructor Certification from Pro Tools 11 to Pro Tools 12. Thank you for completing this report.
