1 DEPARTMENT/GRADE LEVEL: Band (Beginning Band) COURSE/SUBJECT TITLE: Instrumental Music #0440 TIME FRAME (WEEKS): 40 weeks (4 weeks-summer, 36 weeks-school year) OVERALL STUDENT OBJECTIVES FOR THE UNIT: Instrumental Music provides students with the opportunity to apply knowledge learned in the kindergarten through grade six (K-6) exploring music curriculum by learning to play an instrument. Instruction is designed to enable students to connect, examine, imagine, define, try, extend, refine, and integrate music study into other subject areas. The instrumental classes provide beginning instruction in any of the following areas: (1) woodwinds, (2) brass, and (3) percussion. Ensemble and solo activities are designed for students to develop elements of musicianship including, but not limited to, tone production, technical skills, intonation, and music reading skills. Experiences may include improvising and playing by ear. Students also participate in performance opportunities outside of the school day that support and extend the learning in the classroom.
