1 Grade Level: Course #: 4168 Length: Full Year Credits: Two Diploma: Core 40, Academic Honors Prerequisite: Beginning Concert Band COURSE DESCRIPTION: Intermediate Concert Band This is an intermediate level of concert band which further develops elements of musicianship in the following areas: (1) tone production, (2) technical skills, (3) intonation, (4) music reading skills, (5) listening skills, (6) analyzing music, and (7) studying historically significant styles of literature. The band will present three or four concerts per year and perform in the district concert band contest in April. Participation in solo ensemble contest is encouraged. Members of this group will be part of the marching band during the first nine weeks or will be required to complete alternative projects designated by the band director. COURSE OUTLINE: I. Demonstrate the Language Art of 40% of course time Reading and Interpreting Music Notation - Identifies, Defines, and Notates all Interpretive Symbols Appropriate to the Music Being Performed - Writes the Key Signatures for the Following Major Scales, in the Clef Sign of His / Her Instrument: Concert C, F, Bb, Eb, Ab - Identifies all Pitches on the Grand Scale - Performs at Sight Rhythms Containing the Following Notes and Rests, Including Dotted Notes and Rests: Whole, Half, Quarter, Eighth, Sixteenth in the Following Meters: 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 2/2, 6/8, 3/8, 5/4 - Demonstrates Legato, Tenuto, Staccato, Marcato Tonguing Patterns as Required in Given Pieces of Music - Interprets and Performs Dynamic Changes as Noted in Given Music Selections - Interprets and Performs Given Tempo Markings and Alterations as Notated in Appropriated Music Selections - Interprets and Performs Music Containing First and Second Endings, Measure Rests and Repeats, DC and D.S. Indications and Codas - Interprets and Counts (Orally and in Written Form) Given Rhythms from Grade III Level Music Using the 1&2&3&4& Counting System - Interprets and Performs at Sight Music at the Grade III Level

2 C. Participation in Marching and Concert Band D. Individual Time with Director to Check Off Skills II. Perform Music Independently and with Others 35% of course time - Demonstrate Correct Fingerings, Including Alternate Fingerings, for all Notes within the Practical Range of His / her Instrument - Performs Major Scales Appropriate to the Music Being Studied, Over the Practical Range of the Instrument, Including the Following: C, F, G, Bb, Eb, Ab. These Scales will be Played in Eighth Notes at a Metronome Marking of Performs a Chromatic Scale Over the Practical Range of His / Her Instrument - Identifies and Responds to Standard Preparatory Conducting Beats, Release Motions, Entrance Cues, and Expressive Gestures - Adjusts the Pitch of His / her Instrument to a Given Standard During Actual Performance and with the Use of a Tuning Device - Demonstrates the Attack and Release of a Tone, in Accordance with the needs of Given Musical Selections at Grade III and III+ Levels - Demonstrates Appropriate Playing Position for His / Her Instrument in all Registers and Dynamic Levels - Demonstrates a Tone Quality Characteristic of His / Her Instrument in all Registers and Dynamic Level - Performs Music with Rhythms that Contain the Following Notes and Rests, Including Dotted Notes and Rests: Whole, Half, Quarter, Eighth, and Sixteenth - Performs Musical Selections that Contain the Following Time Signatures: 4/4, 2/3, 3/4, 2/4, 3/8 6/8, 5/4 - Perform Works for Three of the Following Compositional Periods with Characteristic Interpretive Elements: Baroque, Classical, Romantic, Impressionistic, 20 th Century - Perform with Other Instrumentalists to Achieve a Refined Ensemble Sound, Including Volume, Timbre, Balance, and Blend - Demonstrates Appropriate Care of His / Her Instrument(s)

Describe, Analyze, and Create Music 10% of course time - Names Pitches Found on the Grand Staff - Defines Given Musical Terms Used in Band and / or Solo-Ensemble Music Being Studied - Identifies and Describes the Five Elements of Music (Melody, Harmony, Rhythms, form, Timbre) - Analyzes, Writes, and Counts Rhythmic Notations Involving the Following Notes and Rests, Including Dotted Notes and Rests: Whole, Half, Quarter, Eighth, Sixteenth; Using the 1&2&3&4& Counting System - Describe the Following Time Signatures by the Number of Beats Per Measure and the Unit of Beat: 4/4, 2/2, 3/4, 2/4, 3/8, 6/8, 5/4, 7/8, 5/8 - Describes the Basic Form of All Music Being Studied - Identifies, Aurally and visually, Key Changes in a Given Composition - Spells Scales in the Following Major Keys: Concert C, F, G, Bb, Eb, Ab IV. Evaluate Music by Using Critical Thinking and Listening Skills 5% of course time - Aurally Identifies Correct Performance of Given Rhythmic Notation in the Following Meters: 4/4, 2/2, 3/4, 2/4, 3/8 - Names the Order of Flats and Sharps in Key Signature - Matches Pitch to a Standard, Given Note in the Practical Playing Range of His / Her Instrument

4 - Aurally Identifies the Following Styles of Attack and Release, Given the Written Music Notation: Tenuto, Legato, Staccato, Marcato - Visually Identifies the Following Standard Articulation Markings: Slur, Tenuto, Staccato - Visually Identifies and Diagrams Conducting Patterns for the Following Meters: 4/4, 3/4, 2/4, 3+2, Evaluates Music Performances (Written) Using the Elements of Music (Melody, Harmony, Rhythm, Form, Timbre) - Aurally Evaluates His / Her Individual Tone Quality as it Applies to a Particular Passage or Need of the Music Being Performed - Aurally Discriminates Among Various Instrumental Timbres V. Demonstrate a Knowledge of Music History and 10% of course time Cultural Heritage - Observes and Describes Live and / or Videotaped Performances by Professional Players and / or Composers - Studies the Creation and Re-Creation of Music Through Individual, Small, and Large Group Performance - Performs Music in a Variety of Styles and Periods of Composition - Demonstrates Self / Group Confidence, Discipline, and Accepted Performance Decorum - Selects and Listens to Recordings of Quality Music A.
