2 A very warm welcome to you all, from everyone in the 51st State Band A very warm welcome to tonight s concert from everyone in the 51st State Band. We are thrilled to bring you a fun and varied programme and hope that you will enjoy it! The 51st State Band has introduced hundreds of children to the joys of making music together, and today comprises over 100 young musicians from the age of 7 upwards. Our musicians learn to play in a mutually supportive environment, often achieving the impossible, simply by turning up every week, working hard and learning from those more experienced musicians around them it is these young people who have taught us to expect more from music-making, to look beyond conventional wisdom, to place music at the heart of a life transforming journey. Many musicians playing tonight have been with us since the start and have now themselves become accomplished young instrumentalists many of who decide to go off to study music either at colleges or at university. We are delighted tonight to welcome Jeffery Wilson as our MC! Jeffery Wilson is one of the country s foremost composers and educators in music. He studied composition at the Royal College of Music with John Lambert, Herbert Howells and later with Aladar Majorossy, Gordon Jacob and in Paris with Olivier Messiaen. Jeffery has been commissioned by dozens of top artists to compose especially for them, producing over 200 works to date. He s been composer in residence in over a dozen European cities, and with some notable orchestras, such as the London Festival Orchestra, London Mozart Players and the Northern Sinfonia. We first met Jeffery over 15 years ago when he came to examine all our woodwind players here in Wandsworth. The Jack Petchey Foundation, established by East London entrepreneur Jack Petchey in 1999, is now among the largest and most influential of London s charitable foundations. It focuses on projects and programmes for year olds, and we re very grateful to the foundation for their continued support.

4 Building on 10 years of success with the 51st State Band one of the country s largest youth bands and based in Wandsworth, the Academy opened in May It seeks nothing less than to change the landscape of music education in the inner boroughs of London by bringing together young people from different backgrounds to pursue an extraordinary rich programme of musical learning and performing. In our quest to deliver a really fun, vibrant and fresh music education programme, we have a team of superb teachers offering lessons in: Piano, Jazz Piano, Cello, Drums, Guitar, Bass Guitar, Singing, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Trombone, French Horn, Trumpet, Violin, Composition, Bansuri Flute, Advanced Flute Technique, Flute Ensemble, Tabla, Brazilian Percussion, Reggae, Grade 5 Theory PLUS the 51st State Band, 50 and a Half State Band AND the UK s first Jazz Improvising Choir entitled The Stardust People Choir (open to all ages) BOOK YOUR LESSONS NOW We really welcome your continued support... fundraising ideas, instrument donation, administration skills... and, most of all, enthusiasm to spread the word about this wonderful centre of excellence. Reggae School at the World Heart Beat Music Academy has been driven by our vision to make music education accessible to all. With help from Wandsworth s Youth Opportunity Fund, we are extremely proud to be the first music academy in London to lead the way in teaching musical instruments through the groove of Reggae. Our aim is to rekindle a young person s passion for playing their musical instrument through the rich cultural heritage of Reggae music. Next week, we are welcoming Levi Roots to the academy, as music is at the heart of Levi s famous Reggae Reggae Sauces, Reggae Reggae Cookbooks and Reggae Reggae foods and drinks range. The Stardust People Choir Tuesdays 7pm 9pm The Stardust People Choir is a Jazz Improvising choir led by one of the UK s finest and most charismatic Jazz vocalists, Cleveland Watkiss. It is a perfect place to unlock inhibitions and inspire the latent creativity that lies within us all. The Watkiss Workshops are legendary because he s committed to sharing his great skill and artistry with the community. Cleveland has great conviction that everyone has a voice and something to contribute. If you can already sing, or you ve always wanted to sing, come to the Stardust People Choir, all our welcome. 6 MORE CLASSES AND WORKSHOPS Singing Lessons with Daisy Chute Mondays Daisy is an acclaimed, platinum recorded artist with the group All Angels. As a professional singer who enjoys singing many different styles of music, from opera to classical and jazz to pop, she teaches that the basis of any good, sound singing is through a technique grounded in solid principles. Her classes are extremely popular as she is a fantastic teacher! We now offer small, age-specific singing groups on Mondays: Ages from 3.15pm 4pm Ages 14+ from 4pm 4.45pm Ages 11 and under (Years 3, 4, 5 & 6) from 4.45pm 5.30pm Tabla Tuesdays Playing drums or other percussion instruments has been shown to greatly improve IQ scores of children. Tabla, originally from India, are now played all over the world and are brilliant fun to learn.
