1 The Sta as a Drawing One way to think aout the musical sta is to imagine it as a drawing o the marima keyoard. The lines and spaces o the sta represent each o the diatonic ars o the marima. Up and Down, Let and Right When the noteheads on the sta move rom lower to higher position they represent sounds moving rom lower to higher pitches. When you play these notes on the marima, your physical movement is actually rom let to right. While the notes on the music move up and down, your hands at the marima move let and right. -6-
2 8 Finding Pitches on the Keyoard The pattern o two and three ars on the accidentals give the visual cues necessary or inding all twelve pitches. In the ollowing exercises, look careully or how the pitch you are inding its into this pattern. Practicing looking or each pitch on the sta, the drawing and on your marima. Practice or each pitch Study the notes on the sta Find the corresponding ars on the drawing (the shaded ars) Memorize their position in relationship to the pattern o the accidentals (use the lightly shaded reerence ars when necessary) Find and play the notes on your marima B lat/a sharp œ œ œ œ E lat/d sharp œ œ œ œ -8-
