4 ABOUT THE ARTISTS JOSEPH KALICHSTEIN Acclaimed for the heartfelt intensity and technical mastery of his playing, pianist Joseph Kalichstein enthralls audiences all over the globe, winning equal praise as orchestral soloist, recitalist, and chamber musician. As an Australian critic exclaimed: "To hear Kalichstein play is to fall in love with music all over again! With his diverse repertoire of works, Mr. Kalichstein has collaborated with such celebrated conductors as Daniel Barenboim, Pierre Boulez, James Conlon, Christoph von Dohnányi, Charles Dutoit, Lawrence Foster, Zubin Mehta, André Previn, Leonard Slatkin, Edo de Waart, and David Zinman. He has performed with the world s greatest orchestras, from Boston, Chicago, and Cleveland to the Berlin Philharmonic and the London Symphony. Mr. Kalichstein has also been a frequent partner with the world s most beloved string quartets, including the Emerson Quartet, with whom he played in London and Washington. A favorite of New York concertgoers, Mr. Kalichstein has appeared in several recitals at Carnegie Hall. He serves as the Chamber Music Advisor to the Kennedy Center and is the Artistic Director of the Center s Fortas Chamber Music Concerts. He continues to hold the inaugural Chamber Music Chair at The Juilliard School, where he also teaches a limited number of advanced piano students. Joseph Kalichstein is a founding member of the famed Kalichstein-Laredo- Robinson Trio, now celebrating its 40th anniversary touring season. The trio's most recent recording on Azica is a CD devoted to works that the eminent American composer Ellen Zwilich has written for them. Born in Tel Aviv, he came to the United States in 1962 and completed his studies at The Juilliard School. Prior to winning the 1969 Leventritt Award, he had won the Young Concert Artists Auditions, and as a result he gave a heralded New York recital debut, followed by an invitation from Leonard Bernstein to perform Beethoven s Piano Concerto No. 4 with the New York Philharmonic in a nationally televised concert on CBS. ZIQING GUO Ziqing Guo, a native of China, made his first public appearance at the age of nine, performing Saint-Saëns s violin concerto in Shanghai Concert Hall. He has participated a variety of music festivals and competitions including The Morningside Music Bridge in Poland, Summit Music Festival, where he won the Concerto Competition, Heifetz International Institute, and Aspen Music Festival. He won the FUCHS Chamber Music Competition, received second prize in the J.C. Arriaga Chamber Competition as the youngest competitor, and second prize in the Eisenberg-Fried Concerto Competition from Manhattan School of Music. His string quartet won the 2011 Shanghai Chamber Competition and performed in China and Germany. Mr. Guo's teachers include Qing Zheng and Yang Song from The Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He has participated in master classes with Sylvia Rosenberg, Aaron Rosand, Leonidas Kavakos, Kun Hu, Elmar Oliveira, Mihaela Martin, and Pamela Frank. Mr. Guo is currently studying at the Manhattan School of Music
5 with a full Scholarship and Robert Mann Endowed Scholarship under the tutelage of Nicholas Mann. TZU-WEI HUANG Cellist Tzu-Wei Huang was recently awarded second prize in the East Coast International Competition in New York. He has participated in many music festivals including Performing Art Institute at Wyoming Seminar, Hidden Valley Music Seminar at Monterey, the Banff Centre in Canada, and the Asian Youth Orchestra. Serving as the principal cellist of Asian Youth Orchestra in 2015, Mr. Huang received a full scholarship and toured eight major cities in Northeast Asia including Tokyo, Beijing, Hong Kong, and Taipei. Highlighting the 25th anniversary of Asian Youth Orchestra and the inspiring spirit of young classical musicians, he also participated in the documentary film In Search of Perfect Consonance, directed by the Oscar-winning filmmaker, Ruby Yang. He is a native of Taiwan and a graduate of the music program at Kaohsiung Senior High School. He is currently studying with Philippe Muller and pursuing his Bachelor of Music Degree at Manhattan School of Music with the stipend of the President s Award. His previous teachers were Stephen Geber, Moky Gibson-Lane, and Leewen Dai. YOON LEE The Special Prize winner of the Anton G. Rubinstein International Piano Competition, Yoon Lee is a solo pianist, chamber musician, and teacher in the New York metropolitan area. A pianist characterized by her grounded interpretations and solid sound, Ms. Lee has been on the stages of Carnegie Hall, Château de Fontainebleau, the Schumann-Haus Museum in Leipzig, Hamarikyu Asahi Hall, and Seoul Arts Center. Her live performances have been featured on WQXR, America s leading classical radio station in New York, and KBS, the national television station of South Korea. She is the pianist of Noree Piano Trio, who won the title of Honor s Piano Trio from the prestigious Juilliard School. As a collaborative pianist, she has been the pianist for master classes and studios by masters such as Itzhak Perlman, Leonidas Kavakos, Steven Isserlis, Frans Helmerson, David Geringas, Ida Kavafian, and Pamela Frank. She has taught piano and chamber music at Kneisel Hall Adult Chamber Music Institute, Manhattan School of Music Precollege Division, and Bergen Academy of Music. Her interests in other forms of art have led her to be involved with Noree Performing Arts, where she serves as a Principal Dancer and the Music Director. Ms. Lee is currently co-artistic Director of Noree Chamber Soloists, while pursuing both a Doctor of Musical Arts degree at Manhattan School of Music (Piano Performance) and a Graduate Diploma degree at The Juilliard School (Collaborative Piano). LUKAS STEPP Violinist Lukas Stepp was born in Stuttgart, Germany. He has appeared as a soloist with chamber music groups at festivals throughout Germany and has won prizes in competitions including the Klassikpreis Munster, Concertino Praga, Charles Hennen Concours, the youth prize of the Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Brahms Competition, Portugal s Competition Julio Cardona, The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center
6 and at the Schoenfeld String Competition in Harbin, China. As a soloist, he performed with the Karntener Symphoniker, Macau Youth Orchestra, Youth Orchestra of Baden-Wurttemberg, Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, and Staatsorchester Hildesheim. He was a 2016 graduate of the Hanns Eisler University of Music Berlin where he studied with Feng Ning and Stephan Picard. In 2013, Mr. Stepp participated in the Deutsche Stiftung Musikleben Competition and was provided with the 1663 Andrea Guarnerius violin that he is playing today. His studies in the US are sponsored by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). He is in the master s program at The Juilliard School studying with Ida Kavafian as a recipient of an Irene Land Scholarship. SI YI WU Originally from China, Si Yi Wu began her piano studies at age six. By the age of 11, she had completed the grade 10 exam held by the Music Examination Committee of the Chinese Musician s Association. In 2007 she was admitted to Sichuan Conservatory of Music High School, where she studied piano with Professor Daxin Zheng. She studied with Eleanor Wong in the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts, and joined the studio of Lee Kum-Sing, head of the piano department at the Vancouver Academy of Music, when she immigrated with her family to Vancouver, Canada in Ms. Wu holds a Bachelor of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music under the tutelage of Marc Silverman. She is currently pursuing her Master's Degree in collaborative piano with Heasook Rhee at the Manhattan School of Music. YI QUN XU Praised for displaying great poise and masterful technique and possessing an amazing rich tone, cellist Yi Qun Xu has performed extensively as a soloist and chamber musician across the United States. Recently, she was invited to participate in the prestigious Marlboro Music School and Festival. She has appeared at the Perlman Music Program, Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Music@Menlo, Four Seasons Music Festival, Heifetz International Music Institute, Kneisel Hall, Olympic Music Festival, and Orford Arts Center. She came to the US after studying with Yi-Bing Chu at China s Central Conservatory of Music, where she won multiple top prizes in Chinese national cello competitions. Additionally, she has received many honors including first prizes at the 2017 Eastern Connecticut Instrumental Competition, the 7th Antonio Janigro International Cello Competition in Croatia, the ASTA National Solo Competition, and the Wellesley Concerto Competition. A passionate chamber musician, she has collaborated and performed with notable artists including Itzhak Perlman, Ani Kavafian, Ida Kavafian, Ralph Kirshbaum, Carter Brey, Timothy Eddy, David Finckel, Hsin-Yun Huang, Mark Kaplan, Tessa Lark, Merry Peckham, Jon Kimura Parker, Itamar Zorman, members of the Cleveland, Juilliard, Tokyo, and Ébène Quartets, and cello principals of Metropolitan Opera Orchestra. A protégé of Ronald Leonard and Laurence Lesser, she studies with Timothy Eddy at The Juilliard School where she is the proud recipient of a Kovner Fellowship.
