3 TEXTS Water Prelude (variations on the word water ) PROTO-INDO-EUROPEAN Though short, the Water Prelude serves an important function: to define the water motif, the seven-note descending/ascending pattern that is encoded throughout the rest of the song cycle. In keeping with the Sufi concept of The Drop That Contained the Sea, I chose to set the prelude in Proto- Indo-European, the original root language from which the vast majority of modern languages can trace their origin. Just as a drop of water contains the essence of the entire ocean, Proto-Indo- European contains the essence of all language. It is the original linguistic Drop. The end of the movement is my unorthodox version of an overture. The orchestra climbs upwards in a churning, growling motion; all the while fragments of the remaining nine movements are heard at random in the swirl of sound. 4 Haktan Gelen Şerbeti (The Drink from God) TURKISH Adapted from a poem by Yunus Emre This piece was inspired both by my research into the great Turkish mystic Yunus Emre, and the whirling practice of the Mevlevi Order, otherwise known as the 'Whirling Dervishes'. Commissioned by DCINY to celebrate the 20 th Anniversary of TURKSOY and as a gift from the citizens of the United States to the Turkish People. First performed June 3, 2013 at the University Concert Hall, Eskişehir, Turkey by the Presidential Symphony Orchestra and Jonathan Griffith Singers, conducted by Jonathan Griffith.
