3 YAN Publications Microphone arrays are widely used for sound source characterization as well as for moving sound sources. Beamforming is one of the post processing methods to localize sound sources based on microphone array in order to create a color map (the so called " acoustic camera "). The beamformer response lies on the array pattern, which is influenced by the array shape. Irregular arrays are able to avoid the spatial aliasing which causes grating lobes and degrades array performance to find the spatial positions of sources. With precise characteristics from the beamformer output, the sources can be reconstructed regarding not only spatial distribution but also spectra. Therefore, spectral modeling methods, e.g. spectral modeling synthesis (SMS) can be combined to the previous results to obtain source signals for auralization. In this paper, we design a spiral microphone array to obtain a specific frequency range and resolution. Besides, an unequal spacing rectangular array is developed as well to compare the performance with the spiral array. Since the second array is separable, Kronecker Array Transform (KAT) can be used to accelerate the beamforming calculation. The beamforming output can be optimized by using deconvolution approach to remove the array response function which is convolved with source signals. With the reconstructed source spectrum generated from the deconvolved beamforming output, the source signal is synthesized separately from tonal and broadband components. Fanyu Meng has been a PhD student and research assistant at Institute of Technical Acoustics (ITA), RWTH Aachen University since He got his master degree of mechanical engineering from Harbin Institute of Technology in China. Fanyu's research mainly focuses on moving sound source modelling for auralization in virtual reality (VR). He has been trying to use microphone arrays to record and reconstruct moving sources, e.g. trains and cars, and then apply as virtual moving sources in VR. His research interest consists of acoustic virtual reality, array signal processing, beamforming, sound synthesis. He has cooperated with colleagues from SONORUS project on "Web based virtual reality tool for evaluation of urban sound environment" ( He has also collaborated with Prof. Bruno Masiero, University of Campinas in Brazil on compressive beamforming applied on moving sound source reconstruction ( At the institute, Fanyu is in charge of the following lab courses: spatial hearing, CTC reproduction, and reverberation time and absorption coefficient measurements.
4 ICA 2016 (Buenos Aires, Argentina) The ICA 2016 was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 5th 9th, The congress welcomed more than 200 students from around the world. It was the first time that the ICA was held in South America! The congress was organized by the Ibero American Federation of Acoustics (FIA) and the Argentinian Acousticians Association (AdAA), in cooperation with the Chilean Acoustics Society (SOCHA), with the endorsement provided by the International Commission for Acoustics (ICA). Jointly, the 10th Ibero American Federation of Acoustics Congress, was jointly held with the 14th Argentinean Congress of Acoustics and the 26th Meeting of the Brazilian Acoustical Society, was held. The Congress was sponsored by the Acoustical Society of America (ASA), the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP), the National Council of Acoustical Consultants (NCAC) and several Universities and Professional Institutions of Latin America.
5 ICA 2016 (Buenos Aires, Argentina) A meeting for Young Acousticians was organized by the Young Acousticians Group of AdAA from Argentina. They specially invited the YAN via the local representative. More than 60 young acousticians attended the meeting! During the YAN presentation YAN members raised several questions, while other attendees expressed interest membership. The presentation gradually turned into a talk on how to get involved. In the end we even recruited members who volunteered to be from Bolivia and Perú! This meeting was held on 9th September and after the congress we went to a bar close to the congress venue. The coordinator of Young Acousticians group from AdAA, Gonzalo Pampuro, found a great place and a lot of people joined us.
6 Local News Two Weeks of Sound were held in Argentina in The first week was held between 26th and 28th of April in Tucumán, and was organized by the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism of the National University of Tucuman and the Argentine Acoustical Association, which coincided with the International Noise Awareness Day. The visibility of the problem of noise was discussed while musical activities took place at the same time. A campaign of noise measurement of different electromechanic appliances was developed, including posting photographs via facebook ( The second Week of Sound was held in Rosario at "Roberto Fontanarrosa" Cultural Center between 9th and 13th of May, 2016, and was organized by the Latin American Foundation of Professional Audio and the Argentine Acoustical Association in collaboration with various organizations such as the AES Argentina and the National University of Quilmes. In this case there was a wide range of activities related to professional audio, including product presentations, talks on organization of musical performances, workshops and assessment of the acoustics of large theaters, particularly the results of the acoustical tests that had been performed during the Week of Sound Rosario 2015 on the El Círculo theater in Rosario. There were also several proposals of issues on noise and noise pollution, from both the technical and legal points of view, as well as presentations on soundscape. A giant sound level meter developed at the National University of Rosario finally installed on the façade of the Cultural Center was presented. Finally, there were various musical performances including electroacoustic music, multichannel surround sound and improvisations.
