4 to the appropriate General Education Panel. Not a music major course Appointment of New Members The following individuals will be invited to represent their institutions on the Music Panel: Dr. R. Scott Quant, Quincy University Stuart Folse, Roosevelt University Dr. Michael McFerron, Lewis University Five Year Review s participating in the Music Major panel were asked to review their approved course descriptions and other information on the website. Most institutions responded, and in some instances made corrections. Others submitted new courses, which were reviewed. s that did not respond will be re-contacted and asked to respond to the review request. The Panel also reviewed participating institutions about a variety of policy issues. A summary of responses is included as an addendum to this document. Discussion The panel spent some time discussing the responses to the survey, in addition to other issues. Private lesson time requirements. The panel had a long discussion about whether or not the norm was a one-hour lesson for 2 semester credits and the financial implications for students in schools that charge by individual credit hour. The outline found on itransfer clearly indicates that the students should take four semesters of a 2 semester-hour course in applied music, for a total of 8 semester hours. The course description for Music 909 (Applied Music) indicates that a 2- semester hour course requires a weekly one-hour lesson; however, the total of applied music credits varies from 1-8 semester hours, and the "1" as well as the variable credit possibilities cause confusion for some readers. How should panel address need to cover jazz? The panel felt that jazz was too important to leave out of the music curriculum. Members agreed to develop a survey of the four-institutions to see what they are doing. The panel will also solicit examples of courses. A possibility would be to create a jazz track. Jerry Daniels has agreed to pull some of this information together by reviewing websites. His address is: cfjld@eiu.edu. Video Conferencing. The panel requested that BHE explore how video conferencing could be arranged to reduce travel time and costs of travel. Guidelines for course approval. A draft will be developed and circulated for panel review. The panel reaffirmed the importance of music department faculty/music administration involvement in developing music course syllabi, and asked that a music department contact (including phone number) be listed on any form submitted to the panel. There was also mention made of requiring a music contact signature showing departmental agreement with the information submitted on any such form. Writing Requirement in Music History 905. The panel will survey existing Music History courses to determine whether there are writing requirements and the nature of the requirements.

5 Should a two-semester sequence be required in Music History/Literature? No change was recommended at this time. The panel recognized that there is a tension between the need to cover the increasing content knowledge in the field and the size of the degree. Incorporating music technology into music curriculum. It was noted that NASM requires the incorporation of technology into the curriculum through study and laboratory settings achieved by a variety of means in various classes and experiences. While some institutions may choose to create a separate class for introducing music technology to its students, NASM does not require a separate course. The panel discussed whether the use of technology should be incorporated into course guidelines. It was agreed that the of Du Page would develop a questionnaire (maybe incorporate into jazz questionnaire?).

6 Summary of Survey Questions for 5 Year review In September, the Music Major Panel Meeting suggested that the panel look at the following policy issues. Participating institutions were surveyed, and submitted the following comments and suggestions: Consider what the panel has done to date. Do we want to make changes? The majority of the replies received felt that no changes be made. However, it was suggested that a set of guidelines for submitting courses to the music panel would be helpful. Using the Official Course Outline used by most colleges the panel would review the past minutes and compare to the Official Course Outline to see if they are in compliance if not, a step-by-step procedure to follow should be fashioned to use when submitting a course to the panel. Should a writing requirement be added to the Music History course? The majority was in favor of a writing requirement added to the Music History course. Do we want to recommend the equivalent of a two-semester history/literature sequence? Adequate 3 credit hours in one semester Inadequate in single quarter unless equivalent to 3 semester credit hours When submitting a course let it be known if it is a one-semester survey course for the AFA Degree or a two-semester sequence detailed survey music course for the BM Degree. Questions concerning this is: 1) If we accept the two semester sequence, will the state or transfer college accept a two semester sequence (total 6 semester hours) that will add 3 hours to the AFA Degree? 2) Is this outside of the 2-year MUS 905 course requirements? How should we accommodate music technology in the curriculum? Replies suggest the panel needs to gather more information and a reach a decision on how to handle the curriculums and a method of inclusion. Then, a new # should be established for the Music Tech course/s. How should we accommodate jazz in the curriculum? Suggestions included: 1) Create a new course description and #. If the school/s want Jazz Theory, submit a course proposal. 2) A method of inclusion of a jazz curriculum to accommodate the curriculum should be developed. 3) Development of an course in Jazz Theory should be a priority at panel meeting.
