3 MARCH 2018 FINE MUSIC FOREWORD 前言 1 Arched harp, one of the ancestors of the modern harp. 摩登豎琴的遠祖之一 弓型豎琴 Let s welcome Dan Yu, our Artist-in-Residence this month. I simply can t wait to see her live concert on 22 March at Studio One. The harp is one of my favourite instruments and I would like to share with you my eight impressions of it 1. History Ancestry of the harp dates back more than 5,000 years! There was the ancient Greek form of the lyre, and there have been numerous unearthed drawings of the Egyptian arched harp. Over the years, the instruments have evolved into different sizes, shapes, and configurations. My following observations are on the huge concert harp, the one seen in a western orchestra. 2. Beauty The body of the harp is quite often beautifully carved and embellished, making it a piece of art in itself. Many people are attracted by its dazzling appearance and the distinctive shape. No wonder that even a brand of dark beer uses the harp as logo! 3. Glissando Its sound is beautiful too, especially the glissando produced with the fingers sliding up and down the strings. The harp can produce different types of glissandos, but the dreamy sound seems to be the instrument s signature. 4. Player = tuner A piano usually has about 230 strings. But, pianists rarely have to tune their own instruments. It s the job of the professional tuners. Many string players are tuners of their own instruments. The violinist has 4 strings to tune, guitarists have 6, and guzheng players have 21. A harpist however, often has to arrive early at a rehearsal, and stay on stage during the intermission to tune the 47 strings! And, it s a lifelong commitment. 5. So many pedals There are seven pedals to move the tones of the corresponding sets of strings half-step higher or lower. While playing with the hands, the harpist s mind is also engaged with preparing the altered notes to come, and adjusting them with the feet timely and precisely. While it looks trickier than driving, the action also has to be quiet but decisive, if you don t want to hear any unnecessary mechanical and sliding sounds. 6. Strong and agile fingers I believe any harpist, male or female, looks elegant by the side of the glamourous instrument. No wonder some wedding photos have the harp as a prop for the couple. But in fact, plucking of the strings may not always be an elegant action; it can be very heavy-duty, especially if you want to produce a big sound. At the same time, the fingers have to be agile to avoid fingernails accidentally touching other ringing strings and making an unwanted buzzing sound. 7. Displacement Another challenge for harpists to meet is its size and weight. It takes up much space and is bulkier than most other instruments. Although there is a special trolley to assist with moving it around, it s still a tiresome duty to do that. Just think about having to bring your own harp on a concert tour?! 8. $ The first time I saw a harp at a music shop, I almost lost count of the number of zeros on the price tag. The harp is certainly not the most affordable instrument. It does seem a little unfair to a harpist. A student model harp can easily cost $100,000, much more to pay for than it would cost a beginner pianist, flautist, or singer! Haha. Harpy listening on Radio 4 this month! Jimmy Shiu Head, Radio 4 歡迎于丹 本月的駐台演奏家 我熱切期待 3 月 22 日的來臨, 可以在一號錄播室觀賞她的精彩演出 豎琴是我最喜愛的樂器之一 忽發奇想, 何不與你分享一下我對這樂器的八個印象? 1. 古老樂器豎琴的遠祖可追溯至五千多年前 古希臘有里拉琴, 而古埃及出土壁畫亦出現過不少弓型豎琴, 多年來更發展出不同大小 形狀和結構的豎琴 以下所分享的, 是經常在西洋管弦樂團出現那件較大型的 音樂會豎琴 2. 外貌豎琴的琴身許多時有精緻的雕刻, 使之成為一件藝術品 很多人會被它耀眼的外觀, 以及獨特的形態所吸引 無怪乎一個黑啤品牌都以豎琴作為他們的商標 3. 滑音不只外觀美麗, 豎琴的聲音也十分悅耳, 特別是滑音 其實, 以手指掃過琴弦都有不少學問和變化, 但那如夢般的奏法, 肯定是豎琴的招牌菜! 4. 琴師 = 調音師鋼琴約有 230 條弦線, 但很少鋼琴手要為自己的樂器調音, 那是調音師的專職 一般弦樂手都能為自己的樂器調音, 只是琴弦的數目卻不同, 小提琴 4, 結他 6, 古箏 21, 豎琴則有 47! 豎琴手常常要提早到達排練場地, 並在演出中場休息時留在台上調音 這更是終身的工作呢! 5. 腳掣多多豎琴有七個踏瓣去改變 ( 升高或降低半音 ) 某組弦線的音高, 有時演奏者的手一邊彈奏, 心裡卻要一邊準備將要出現的變化音, 並以不同踏瓣設定各升 降或還原的狀態 這似乎比駕駛汽車還要複雜 此外, 腳部動作還要十分安靜而快速地進行, 不然就會聽到那些機械裝置的雜聲或古怪的滑音 6. 大力金剛指站在這件富魅力的樂器旁邊, 無論是男是女, 總會增添一份優雅感覺 難怪有些婚妙攝影店會以一部豎琴作為新人的道具 其實優雅與否就見仁見智, 不過撥弦的動作, 特別是你想彈得大聲, 絕對可以是 粗重 的筋肉工作 要具備 大力金剛指 的同時, 豎琴手的動作又要精準靈巧, 避免指甲觸碰到正在震動的琴弦, 製造不必要的吱吱聲響 7. 運輸另一個挑戰是來自樂器的尺寸和重量 豎琴身軀龐大, 亦很佔位置 雖然豎琴手會有一部專用的手推車, 卻不會使之變得 輕而易舉 你有想過帶同自己的豎琴到各地巡演嗎? 8. $ 小時候第一次在樂器店看見一部豎琴, 那價錢牌上的數字把我嚇了一跳 豎琴絕不便宜, 就算學生型號都動輒要十萬元, 與購買其他樂器例如鋼琴和小提琴的入門版相比, 顯然有一定差距 不知豎琴手會否羨慕學唱歌的朋友呢? 這個月, 豎起耳朵聽豎琴! 7 Match Making Concert 2018 Emerging Composers x Emerging Performers 創藝匯新聲 2018 創 演青年音樂家 The Match Making Concert 2014 brought together Radio 4 s Young Music Makers and Hong Kong s veteran composers. The concert will return with a little twist. This time, our YMM will be matched with the creative talents of Hong Kong s young composers. Flautist Angus Lee was one of the performers last time. Here he talks about the collaboration and explains the special relationship between the composer and performer 年 創藝匯新聲 把第四台的 樂壇新秀 和香港多位前輩作曲家連繫起來 四年後, 這音樂會捲土重來, 換來的譜曲者卻是新生代 長笛好手李一葦曾在上一次的音樂會演出, 我們特別請他執筆分享箇中感受, 並談談作曲者與表演者的微妙關係 Sculpting our Musical Legacy 音樂傳承 Flautist Angus Lee and pianist Rachel Cheung performed A Dream too Short by Victor Chan (centre) in the Match Making Concert in 演奏長笛的李一葦夥拍鋼琴家張緯晴在 2014 年 創藝匯新聲 演出陳偉光 ( 中 ) 的 夢猶未已 Angus Lee 李一葦 Celebrating the up-and-coming generation of homegrown young musicians, this Match Making Concert presented by the Hong Kong Composers Guild (HKCG) and in association with RTHK Radio 4 is guaranteed to be a highlight of Young Music Makers (YMM) not only represent music making at a very high level but also with a diverse range of perspectives, aesthetics, and practices. The heart of the matter is that their command of the instruments, profound interpretation of music, and sparkling stage presence entrances and bedazzles any genuinely attentive listeners. Their age becomes completely irrelevant, a point which the panel of adjudicators seems to be underpinning. Given their distinction in the interpretation of canonic works of the past, YMM and a few other young musicians are now tasked with the daunting challenge of performing nine works for the occasion. Given the number of unique combinations available, I personally hope to see as much exploration, experimentation, and collaboration as possible during the creative process, since effective communication is at the heart of good (new) musicmaking. As interpreters, we can only rely on what is handed down to us in the score to seek the composers intentions. We may enrich our understanding of the context in which the music is created by researching the historical background of the piece s creation, but there is nothing more direct and revealing than speaking to the composer personally. This contact remains the real advantage of contemporary music. We often think of works in the past as established, as something with a stable identity and a fixed set of attributes. The truth is that composers often alter their works after hearing it being performed. Instrumentalists bring what is often an unforeseen option to the table for composers. If we can apply this attitude with moderation and caution when interpreting works of the past, this opens up a whole new vista of possibilities. We should not, and must never, be content with a museum style of preserving our tradition. Classical music will lose its relevance if we fail to bring it new interpretations. Having been involved in the 2014 edition of the RTHK and HKCG Match Making Concert, I know this is not an end to itself, but the beginning of lasting relationships between a new generation of performers and composers. 香港電台第四台與香港作曲家聯會多年來致力推動本地音樂發展, 透過 樂壇新秀 及 音樂新一代 等活動, 發掘和培養本地年輕音樂家 今年 4 月兩個組織將再度攜手合作舉辦 創藝匯新聲 2018 創 演青年音樂家, 焦點所在, 是由 樂壇新秀 與數位年青音樂家演出九位本地年青作曲家的創作 我曾以 樂壇新秀 的身份參與 2014 年度的 創藝匯新聲, 演出陳偉光和許翔威的作品 一般而言, 演奏者只能透過樂譜上的標示, 推測作曲家想傳達的訊息 若希望再深入明白作品的喻意, 演奏者可嘗試了解作品創作的時代背景 歷史事件, 甚至研究作曲家留下的文字書信 不過, 現代音樂最引人入勝之處, 是我們能直接與作曲家對話, 認識他們的個性 理念, 作品的創作動機和靈感, 從而斷定適合該首樂曲的風格 話雖如此, 但創作從來不是單一的公式 作曲家能從一個角度審示自己的作品, 演奏家則會從更多不同的方向分析樂曲, 為作曲家提供前所未有的演繹角度 環觀歷史, 不少作曲家都曾受演奏家啟發而 ( 重新 ) 創作, 浦羅哥菲夫的長笛與小提琴奏鳴曲, 又或是哈察都量的小提琴與長笛協奏曲, 就是很好的例子 創藝匯新聲, 不但造就了演奏家與作曲家難能可貴的合作機會, 同時亦為前輩音樂家和年輕音樂家打造溝通的橋樑, 鞏固和締造香港新音樂的根基與未來

10 12 MARCH 2018 FINE MUSIC COVER STORY 封面故事 Tireless about the Harp RTHK Radio 4 Artist-in-Residence Shing Chun-hay Radio 4 s Artist-in-Residence series proudly returns and invites outstanding musicians to record programmes and present live recitals at our studio. The Artist-in-Residence this month is harpist Dan Yu, Gold Medal Winner of the USA International Harp Competition, one of the two biggest harp competitions in the world. Competing against 37 contestants from 14 countries, Dan Yu came first and made history as the first Chinese harpist to win the prestigious award. The Unforgettable Competition In talking about the 2001 competition, she thought it was an unforgettable experience of a lifetime. She says this in a reflective manner. A total of eight prizes are awarded in the competition and Dan Yu tells me, not without some amusement, her goal at that time was to only get the eighth place. Then things proceeded a little differently from expected. I remember it was after the semi-final, I didn t think I had much chance making it through to the fourth round because only three people would be chosen. So my nerves, which had been building up for an entire year, instantly relaxed. How good that I am done and can rest! And I thought I probably would get the eighth place, so I rested. Eventually that night I happened to pass by the college and on my way I was curious to see who entered the fourth round Then among the three names in the final I saw mine. I felt so miserable! (laugh) I went from perfectly relaxed to getting nervous all over again. What she achieved finally was a historic result for Chinese harpists. Her Teacher and Herself as a Teacher It takes a great teacher to bring forth a great student. It is no coincidence that Dan Yu s first teacher, Professor Yue Pingqiu, is the teacher of many of the foremost Chinese harpists of this generation. The professor met Dan Yu when she was one and a half years old. At that time she already decided to teach Dan Yu the harp, seeing that she was perfectly suitable despite her relatively short pinky fingers (which are not used in harp playing). She treated me like her own child. She gave everything to her students. I always remember during the winter or summer break, because some students had no harps at home, she would invite them to come to her place so they could practise at school, and was ended giving lessons to them every day. As she talks about her teacher, Dan Yu s face glows inspiration. In fact, Dan Yu is also a teacher now and spends much of her time teaching the harp. Her students have, in recent years, won numerous awards in international competitions. The fast-growing popularity of harp in Hong Kong is a most exciting trend for her. She notes that the third World Harp Congress, held in 1987, had no more than five harpists from Hong Kong and mainland China. But the number multiplied to over 400 when the thirteenth edition of the triennial event was presented in Hong Kong in 2017, representing nearly half of the total number of participating harpists. Even more adults are taking up the harp now, learning it with much devotion despite burden from work and family. My adult students genuinely enjoy learning it. This has always moved me a lot. Opening Concert of World Harp Congress 年 世界豎琴大會 開幕音樂會 Hong Kong Harp Society Limited Konghou and Harp Besides teaching, Dan Yu performs actively, having played in some of the most renowned concert venues in the world including Lincoln Center s Alice Tully Hall in New York and Wigmore Hall in London. This month, on 22 March, she will come to RTHK to give a live recital. A big highlight is that she will be bringing her konghou with her to perform the first two movements from Liu Weiguang s Along the River During

Dan Yu says the konghou has such a long history that even the Dunhuang murals have them. The instrument resembles the harp in appearance but while the harp has only one row of strings, konghou has two. One row on the left, and another on the right, connected at the base. This makes the instrument capable of producing typical sounds in traditional Chinese music, such as vibrato and note bending. The strings on the konghou are softer and can be pushed in more. The recital will be a rare opportunity for music lovers to listen at a close distance to the unique timbre of the instrument, sounding like both the guzheng and the harp. Dan Yu will also present a programme of enchanting harp pieces. This includes Carnival of Venice, a highly virtuosic piece by Félix Godefroid, the 19th-century Belgian harpist immortalised as the Paganini of the harp. And to commemorate the centenary of Debussy s death, Dan Yu will team up with flautist Li Danwei Vivi and violist Cass Ho in the composer s Sonata for Flute, Viola and Harp, a unique work written for the instrumental combination. In anticipation of the live recital, there will also be a pre-recorded programme, broadcast on 15 March, of a different set of works. One of them is Bernard Andrès Parvis, where Dan Yu and Ann Huang explore novel sounds by tapping various places on two harps. For a detailed list of the two programmes, refer to p. 17. Performing and teaching both require enormous effort. So finally I ask Dan Yu what hobbies she has when she needs a break. Reading and tidying up my room are her answers. Then she ponders a little and says, But actually when doing things I like, practising and teaching, I don t seem to feel really tired This is something I m very grateful about because what I do is what I like They re all enjoyable things to do and they give me more opportunity to grow.

12 MARCH 2018 FINE MUSIC COVER STORY 封面故事 15 有教無 累 的豎琴家 香港電台第四台 駐台演奏家 成俊曦第四台 駐台演奏家 系列載譽回歸, 一如以往邀請出色演奏家蒞臨電台錄製節目, 舉行現場音樂會與樂迷近距離接觸 3 月份與大家見面的, 是豎琴演奏家于丹 她在全球兩大豎琴比賽之一的 美國國際豎琴大賽 中, 力壓來自十四個國家的三十七位參賽者勇奪金獎, 是首位華人獲此最高殊榮 Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra In the performance of a harp concerto, Never Far Away by Bright Sheng, with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Perry So in 年于丹與蘇柏軒指揮的香港管弦樂團演出盛宗亮的 鄉思 難忘的大賽 談及 2001 年那場賽事, 于丹認為 畢生難忘 原來大賽設八個獎項, 于丹當時的目標只想得第八名, 不過事情發展有點出乎意料之外 她笑言 : 記得彈完準決賽後, 覺得進入第四輪機會不大, 因為只有三個人會晉升至下一輪 我積累了一年的緊張度那時候就放鬆了 太好了! 終於結束, 可以休息一下 我覺得應該可以拿到第八名, 就去了休息 結果晚上剛好經過學校, 順便看看那三個人進到第四輪 我就看到, 我的名字是決賽三位入圍者其中之一, 當時覺得很難過!( 笑 ) 完全放鬆的整個人又開始緊張起來 結果于丹取得了為華人豎琴界創造歷史的賽果 豎琴教與學 所謂 名師出高徒, 培育了包括于丹當今一整代優秀豎琴家的, 正是于丹的啟蒙恩師樂平秋教授 樂平秋在于丹一歲半時, 觀察到雖然她的尾指較短, 但仍適合彈豎琴 ( 因為不需用到尾指 ), 當時已認定要教于丹豎琴 她拿我當自己的孩子一樣看待, 對學生非常盡心盡力 我仍記起有些學生放寒 暑假時, 家裡沒有琴, 她為了讓學生可以練琴, 會讓學生到她家裡坐, 基本上每天都給學生上課 談到了老師, 于丹臉上盡是感恩和滿足 事實上, 于丹現在也是老師, 投入很多時間教琴, 她的學生近年在國際比賽中亦屢獲獎項 豎琴在香港蓬勃發展, 令于丹十分振奮, 她表示每三年舉辦一度的 世界豎琴大會, 1987 年第三屆僅有不超過五位來自香港和國內的豎琴手參加, 而去年大會則在香港舉行, 人數已倍增至四百, 佔全體豎琴手近半 連成年人學豎琴也越來越多, 他們背負著工作與家庭依然十分投入學琴 我的成年學生真是很享受學琴這個過程, 這常常令我非常感動 箜篌 豎琴 教學以外, 于丹仍舊四出表演 經驗豐富的她曾於全球最著名的音樂廳演出, 包括紐約林肯中心艾莉絲 塔利廳 倫敦威格摩音樂廳等 本月 22 日, 于丹將會親臨香港電台送上一場現場音樂會, 其中一大亮點, 是于丹將會帶來她的箜篌, 彈奏劉為光作曲 吳琳改編的 清明上河圖 首兩個樂章 箜篌是古老的中國樂器, 據于丹介紹, 連敦煌壁畫上亦見其蹤, 貌似豎琴, 不過豎琴只有單排弦, 箜篌則有兩排弦, 左邊一排, 右邊一排, 在底下連接, 因此箜篌可發出一些傳統中國音樂的聲音, 即揉 壓 撑 箜篌的弦較柔軟, 可以被推進去更多 屆時樂迷可近距離欣賞箜篌既似古箏 又像豎琴的獨特音色, 機會難得 當然于丹亦會送上迷人的豎琴曲目, 彈奏十九世紀比利時豎琴泰斗歌夫華的炫技之作 威尼斯狂歡節 歌夫華獲譽為 豎琴界的巴格尼尼, 其作品技巧之豐富可想而知! 另外為紀念德布西逝世一百週年, 于丹亦將聯同吹奏長笛的李丹微和中提琴手何珈樺, 合奏德布西為這重奏組合創作的經典奏鳴曲 另外, 在 3 月 15 日播出的錄音音樂會中, 于丹又會與另一位豎琴家黃士倫合作, 攜手演繹安特里斯的 前院, 在豎琴的不同部份拍打出新奇聲響 詳細曲目請參閱第 17 頁 演出與教學一樣, 都需要很多心力, 所以最後我問于丹有沒有甚麼嗜好舒緩工作的辛勞 看書 和 清潔房間 是她的答案, 然後她再想了想, 說 : 但是當我做一件事情是我喜歡做的, 像練琴 教學生, 好像不會覺得疲累 這都是很享受的事情, 讓自己有更多成長的機會

14 SUNDAY OPERA MARCH 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 19 Sundays 2:00pm Lo King-man The Sunday Opera listing for the month of March begins with a collection of fantastic stories from a poet s intoxicated mind, followed by a tragic romance about a great actress death caused by a poisoned bouquet sent by a jealous rival, a strange tale of morbid nostalgia for a lost passion, and a contrasting double bill of bitter vengeance and sweet innocent love. 4 March: Offenbach s Les Contes d Hoffmann The phenomenal success of Jacques Offenbach ( ) as a producer of numerous farcical operettas prevented him from gaining recognition as a respectable composer of serious music. It was not until the final years of his life that he was able to concentrate on creating a full-scale opera of lasting artistic merit and came very close to realising his life-long ambition. Ernst Kainerstorfer Neil Shicoff, tenor Luciana Serra, soprano Unfortunately, Offenbach died before he could complete the orchestration of Les Contes d Hoffmann (The Tales of Hoffmann). The work was prepared for production at the Opéra Comique of Paris by Ernest Guiraud, who had also been responsible for writing the accompanied recitatives for the grand opera edition of Bizet s Carmen. The premiere took place four months after the composer s funeral. The poet E.T.A. Hoffmann s infatuation for the prima donna Stella forms the prologue and epilogue of the opera, while each of the three central acts describes his unfortunate love affair respectively with Olympia the mechanical doll, Giulietta the Venetian courtesan, and Antonia the consumptive young singer, each time frustrated by the same demonic character who crosses his fate. The recording selected by Alex Tam for your enjoyment boasts of a superb cast of singers led by tenor Niel Shicoff in the title role, with sopranos Luciana Serra, Rosalind Plowright, and Jessye Norman each portraying a different heroine in the three central tales. Maestro Sylvain Cambreling conducts the Brussels National Opera Choir and Symphony Orchestre. 11 March: Cilea s Adriana Lecouvreur In real life, Adrienne Lecouvreur was a famous French actress in early 18th-century Paris, best-known for her celebrated portrayal of heroines in classical tragedies. The plot of this opera is built around the lovetriangle relationship between the actress, Maurizio the Count of Saxony, and the Princess de Bouillon. The story is full of passion, intrigues, and jealous confrontations, and ends with the diva s demise through inhaling the fragrance from a bouquet of poisoned flowers, a gift from the Princess. Renata Scotto, soprano James Levine, conductor Francesco Cilea ( ) was one of the last composers of the Italian verismo school which advocated realism, depiction of low life, violent action, and passionate vocal expression. He was a superb melodist and a skilful orchestrator. Adriana Lecouvreur, his most successful and enduring work, contains many fine arias and scenes with expressive vocal lines that convey sweeping passion. Michael Lutch Our complete recording features the fabulous partnership of soprano Renata Scotto and tenor Plácido Domingo. The cast also includes baritone Sherrill Milnes and mezzo-soprano Elena Obraztrova, with James Levine conducting the Ambrosian Opera Chorus and the Philharmonia Orchestra.

15 MARCH 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 21 Prof. Lo King-man, producer and director of numerous opera productions in Hong Kong. 18 March: Korngold s Die Tote Stadt Erich Wolfgang Korngold ( ) was born in Moravia and brought up in Vienna, where he began his formal studies at the conservatory of music at the age of 9. His precocious talent attracted the attention of Gustav Mahler, who declared him a genius. Throughout his teens, he composed prolifically and with great success. His early orchestral works and operas were conducted by such important masters as Arthur Nikisch, Felix Weingartner, Richard Strauss, and Bruno Walter. His most celebrated opera, Die Tote Stadt (The City of Death) was given its premiere simultaneously in Hamburg and Cologne in He was only 23 years old. HGM Press Michel René Kollo, tenor The opera deals with the dream-like experience of Paul, a man devoted to the memory of his dead wife, Marie. He has created a temple of memories in his house and keeps everything carefully preserved to remind him of his departed spouse. Then, he meets Marietta, a woman with a remarkable resemblance to Marie. His search for the soul of a dead woman turns into a passion for the body of a living one. Paul finally realises that there can be no resurrection on earth, no reunion with those who have left this world. The stellar cast of our recording is led by famous heldentenor René Kollo in the role of Paul and soprano Carol Neblett as both the apparition of Marie and Marietta. The Bavarian Radio Chorus and the Munich Radio Orchestra participate under the baton of Erich Leinsdorf. 25 March: Mascagni s Cavalleria Rusticana and L amico Fritz Pietro Mascagni ( ) was 27 years old when his one-act opera Cavalleria Rusticana won the Sonzogno competition. The work s premiere in Rome in 1890 was a sensational success. It brought the composer international fame overnight and marked the beginning of a new movement known as verismo (realism) in Italian opera. The action of Cavalleria Rusticana (Rustic Chivalry) takes place in rural Sicily and depicts the traditional act of primitive justice resulting in murder. It is a terse, violent story of illicit love, jealousy, and revenge that provides ample opportunity for passionate singing. The score is filled with a continuous flow of memorable melodies and powerful emotional expression. Our principal singers are Stefka Evstatieva, dramatic soprano, Giacomo Aragall, tenor, and Eduard Tumagian, baritone. The Slovak Philharmonic Choir and the Czecho-Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra of Bratislava perform under the baton of Alexander Rahbari. Advertisement of Cavalleria Rusticana for radio broadcast with American soprano Lisa Roma as Santuzza in 1930 Mascagni s second opera, L amico Fritz (Our Friend Fritz), composed in 1891, is a lyrical comedy set to a gentle pastoral love story with a happy ending. A charming performance affectionately sung by tenor Luciano Pavarotti and soprano Mirella Freni at the Royal Opera House of London conducted by Gianandrea Gavazzeni will be presented for your listening pleasure.

16 24 MARCH 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 Tim Wilson Saturdays 10:00pm There was a time when my music listening was largely contained within a well-played, somewhat scratched and highly treasured collection of long playing records (LPs for short). Some of you may have seen some among your grandparents possessions or perhaps in an antique store large round, black disks in colourful cardboard covers lots of information on the back. Music Gets Smaller Then came CDs. They are small ( Compact Disks) and seemingly much more resistant to damage. The sound quality was a touch more electric, a bit colder than the analogue medium but one soon got over that given the space limitations in Hong Kong. What is more, you could listen to the entire Mingus Fables of Faubus from Live in Europe without having to flip the record in the middle. Still, it involved quite a lot of investment in new hardware: players, cleaners, and smaller shelving. And now we have the Internet! What the implications for music publishing will be no one can say. However, we clearly have more convenient access to a wider variety of music than we had before. Though the big conglomerates may be reaping less from artists efforts, it does provide an avenue for the less prominent to put their creations before the public without piles of dollars. Stations such as K Jazz, Jazz 24, and WBGO (which coincidentally keeps me in touch with my hometown of Newark, New Jersey) allow me to keep abreast of new trends and artists while reminding me of many musical experiences that have shaped my past. (It s always good to look in the rearview mirror before you make a move.) Thus, this series of programmes will be dedicated to the many gratifying recent discoveries I have made (with the help of radio) as well as flashbacks to established favourites. The Roots of Jazz One trend that I find quite encouraging is the interest in what might be described as roots music. Groups such as Ranky Tanky that is inspired by the Gullah music of Georgia (the southern US state, not the country) and The Carolina Chocolate Drops perform with energy and honesty in traditional idioms devoid of modern adornments. Mixing jazz with bluegrass, groups such as The Flecktones and Jeff Coffin s Mu tet have another kind of roots perspective. Digging into some other roots of jazz, Pearl Django gets its style and instrumentation from Django Rheinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli. Trumpet players seem to be the most susceptible to reviving the influence of New Orleans, perhaps because of the enormous legacy left by Louis Armstrong. Nicolas Payton with Gumbo Nouveau and many of the endeavors of Wynton Marsalis (both players are from New Orleans) have successfully blended their mastery of modern styles with the inspiration from the original jazz of that city. A Canadian trumpetist, Bria Skonberg, also plays with a good feel for those same predecessors. Of course, institutions such as Dr. John and Allen Tousaint have kept other facets of New Orleans alive and in style.

17 Arts Happenings 藝壇快訊 Dr. Andrea Bruce South American Contributions José Rizo is a band leader, composer, and host of Jazz on the Latin Side on radio station K Jazz. Jazz Singers Turning South of the US, some artists come to mind who are a little outside the familiar Salsa/ Bossa mainstream. Brazilians Antonio Adolfo and Jovino Santos Neto as well as Mexican José Rizo s Mongorama are fresh discoveries for me in the Latin American field. I have become fond of a number of vocalists who hadn t caught my attention earlier. Catherine Russell falls gracefully among the musicians who seek to revive and revitalise earlier styles while Lizz Wright has a strong Gospel influence. Eva Cassidy was little known outside her native Seattle but deserves wider appreciation. Canadian Holly Cole and Cecile McLorin Salvant, of Haitian/French heritage, bring some unique and original tones to their singing. Not to forget the boys: Broadway sensation Leslie Odoms, Jr, has equal stature as a jazz singer with a very special quality to his voice. Woman pianists are not as rare as other female jazz artists so it comes as no surprise that my recent preferences include Lynne Arriale and Israeli Anat Fort. Another pianist who has a fresh voice with connections to modern jazz is Taylor Eigsti. Bassist leaders are not such a common phenomenon but Ben Williams and Canadian Roberto Occhipinti are musicians who manage to keep an eye on the future while showing mastery of the past. Helping to bridge the technological gap in the jazz idiom are groups such as Trio Subtonic and The Next Collective but you can surely count on me to play some of your and my favourites from the mother lode of mainstream jazz. Marin Alsop to become Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra s First Female Chief Conductor 艾爾梭成為維也納電台交響樂團首位女總指揮 Charles Chik 戚家榮 Although Vienna is known as the musical capital of the world, it has always been less receptive to women musicians, let alone promoting them to leadership roles. In 1997, Vienna Philharmonic first announced that they would accept female musicians due to public pressure. 21 years later, another orchestra from Vienna welcomes their first female Chief Conductor. American conductor Marin Alsop will take up the post as the Chief Conductor of the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra in September 2019 when the Orchestra celebrates its 50th anniversary. Born in New York, Alsop dreamed of becoming a conductor at the age of nine. She studied under Leonard Bernstein, and has led the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2007 and the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra since In 2013, she became the first female conductor to conduct the Last Night of the BBC Proms. Alsop first conducted the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra in 2014, performing works by Bernstein and Mahler. The players in the Orchestra unanimously proposed Alsop as their new Chief Conductor. I am deeply moved by the fact that the players instigated my appointment, said Alsop. 18 MARCH 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 29 Centennial Debussy 世紀德布西 逢星期日上午 10 時正 Timothy Kwok 郭家豪 Isaac Lau Debussy 德布西 剛到美國印第安納大學學習時, 鋼琴系的普雷斯勒教授 (Menahem Pressler) 同時獲德國總統頒贈代表德意志最高榮譽的一級德意志十字勳章, 以及法國文化界最高榮譽的藝術與文學勳章 在學校的慶祝活動中, 當時已經八十多歲的普雷斯勒分享到 : 演奏了大半個世紀, 到今天我都不能忘記, 第一次彈德布西 第一阿拉伯風格曲 時的那份感動 當時坐在觀眾席的我, 既深深被這位老教授的一番話所震撼, 也想到自己小時候第一次參加鋼琴比賽的曲目, 恰巧也是 第一阿拉伯風格曲 德布西樂曲裡優美的和聲, 既引領著台上的普雷斯勒贏得 1946 年德布西國際鋼琴大賽首獎, 及後成為印第安納大學裡最傑出的鋼琴教授之一 ; 也把在新界公共屋邨裡練著直立式鋼琴的那個我, 慢慢帶到世界最知名的音樂學府之一, 奇妙地造就成今天的我 1862 年生於法國的作曲家德布西 (Claude Debussy), 十一歲開始在巴黎音樂學院學習, 二十二歲已獲得鼎鼎大名的羅馬大獎 他常被冠以 印象派音樂 開山鼻祖, 卻完全沒有被這個連他自己也討厭的名稱所捆綁著 他反而不斷另闢蹊徑, 嘗試用聲音捕捉詩意 溫差 意象和味道, 最終成為音樂歷史中不可或缺的巨匠 1918 年 3 月 25 日, 這位 永遠前衛 1 的作曲家, 因癌症不治卒於巴黎, 終年 55 歲 Debussy playing the piano with his friend Ernest Chausson (the page turner) in 德布西彈奏鋼琴, 好友蕭頌為他翻譜 (1893) 一個世紀了, 我們對德布西有更深的理解嗎? 很多學鋼琴的小朋友都彈過德布西的鋼琴套曲 兒童天地, 甚至跟朋友合作過四手聯彈作品 小組曲 但作曲家的二十四首前奏曲, 堪稱體現了鋼琴音樂在二十世紀的無限可能 ; 百多年來, 風靡了各地的鋼琴家爭相挑戰 至於德布西的室樂作品更是繽紛多采, 從配器的創新 演奏技法的多變, 至風格的跳脫, 絕不止於四手聯彈呢! 當然, 跟象徵派詩人過從甚密的他, 所創作的聲樂作品無疑是文學與音樂的珍貴結晶 提到管弦樂, 很多人都聽過 牧神之午後 當代作曲家布萊茲 (Pierre Boulez) 更認為 : 現代音樂是被德布西的 牧神之午後 喚醒的 那他還有更精彩的管弦樂嗎? 有興趣更多認識德布西的朋友, 歡迎你由 3 月 4 日起的星期日早上, 收聽 世紀德布西, 與我一同探索德布西的音樂世界 Claude Debussy is one of the most important composers of the 20th century and is regarded as the Founder of musical impressionism, although he disliked the word impressionism to be applied to his music. 19 MARCH 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 31 大地之歌 日本 民謠 祭 Songs of the Earth Minyo: A Showcase of Japanese Folk Songs 逢星期日中午 12 時正 Christopher Pak 白得雲 如果你曾經在日本參加過祭典, 又或者在旅遊途中剛巧碰上這類熱鬧的場面, 一定會聽過配合各種祭典的民歌 日本的民歌稱為 民謠, 而每個地區, 上至縣, 下至町 村, 都會有當地獨特的民謠 其實日本的祭典是一種相當特別的民眾習俗, 一年四季在不同地區都有大大小小的祭典 祭典舉行時會有許多群眾參加, 除了有特定的民謠以外, 還會有不同的舞蹈 樂器演奏 劇場表演 配合特定祭典的行動 服飾等 在日本, 這種整套的祭典民俗活動稱為 民俗藝能 當然日本的民謠並不單單局限於祭典中出現, 現時日本的民謠一般可以分為幾大類, 包括各種勞動活動中傳唱的勞動民謠, 祝賀和節慶中傳唱的喜慶民謠, 以及在神道和盆踊等祭典中傳唱的舞蹈民謠 此外, 還有在文娛聚會中演唱的民謠 敘事民謠 搖籃曲和兒歌幾類 大部份日本民謠為反覆體結構, 由單段的旋律配上多段歌詞, 每首民謠的節奏, 會根據不同的演唱場合而變化 在演唱形式上, 因為很多時是在勞動或節慶中歌唱民謠, 會採用領唱與和應的方式進行 新一輯的 大地之歌 節目, 我會帶大家走遍全日本, 介紹不同地區的民謠 現時日本總共分為四十七個行政區, 分別稱為都 ( 東京 ) 府 ( 大阪 京都 ) 道( 北海道 ) 縣( 共四十三個 ) 節目中大家會聽到來自每個行政區的一首民謠, 從北海道開始, 經過本州的東北 關東 中部 近畿 中國 ( 本州西部 ) 地區, 再到四國 九州, 以至最南面的沖繩縣, 聽眾可以感受到不同地區民謠的風格特色 這四十七首民謠中, 有些對香港的聽眾來說, 可能覺得特別有興趣 例如我們認識的盂蘭節, 在日本也有類似的祭典 參加日本盂蘭盆節祭典的群眾會聚集一起, 跳一種叫 盆踊 的舞蹈, 而用來伴隨盆踊的民謠稱為 音頭 或 盆唄 在節目中, 大家會聽到多首來自不同府 縣的 音頭 和 盆唄 另一類很有特色的民謠, 是內容十分特別的 搖籃曲, 有時歌詞會讓大家意想不到 如果想更了解日本民謠, 請不要錯過 3 月份 大地之歌 的介紹 名古屋広小路夏祭 Pictures courtesy of Kelvin K Chow Japanese folk songs are called minyo, meaning songs of the people. There are several types of minyo, including work songs, auspicious songs, festival songs, dance songs in ritual festivities, party songs, narrative songs, lullabies, and children s songs. In the new series of Songs of the Earth (Cantonese programme), Christopher Pak will introduce folk songs from each of the forty-seven administrative regions in Japan, from Hokkaido in the north, to Honshū, Shikoku, Kyūshū, and Okinawa in the south. 20 MARCH 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 35 逢星期五下午 3 時正 Wong Kin-ting 塵紓 松山榕栝百圍大 九嶷之山相縈帶 白雲在天亦在水 瀟湘之水清且深 五代南唐董源 瀟湘圖 清康熙進士張梁有感於琴曲 瀟湘水雲 的意趣而以右述同題詩和應, 冀以古體詩一首申述前人曲意 據明代寧王朱權 神奇秘譜 所載, 瀟湘水雲 是由南宋浙江永嘉人郭沔所作 聞說他遨游瀟湘之際, 急欲觀賞九嶷山, 企望稍予寄託 可惜山色常被瀟湘的水雲遮蔽, 欲賞無從, 於是憑藉此曲, 盡表 悠揚自得之趣, 水江雲影之興 ; 更有滿頭風雨, 一簑江表, 扁舟五湖之志 古人每臨山川而多所寄託, 於此可見一斑 清康熙進士張梁瀟湘水雲 望之不見愁人心 虞帝於此曾登臨 彌漫滉漾連江潯 上下一碧涵古今 以瀟湘為題的樂曲, 古有琴曲 瀟湘水雲, 近有笛曲 瀟湘銀河 笛子名家陸春齡在上世 紀聯同作曲家何占豪 郭予春 周仲康, 根據流行於湖南的曲調, 以協奏曲形式創作了一首演 奏時間約為十分鐘的笛曲 這首樂曲雖然名為 瀟湘銀河, 但樂感上似乎與 瀟湘江畔觀銀 河 的關聯不大, 反而覺得作曲家是以瀟湘二水描繪當地人民的生活情況 瀟湘二水, 其實是指位於湖南的瀟水和湘水 湘水亦名湘江, 是湖南境內第一大江, 也是長江 水系的重要支流 湘江自西向東注入省內的洞庭湖, 然後由洞庭湖流入長江 湘江兩岸有很 多紅色的石壁, 而江心上面有一個十里長島 ; 西岸那邊, 有一個較小的月亮島, 是新闢的觀光 點 其實, 湘江兩岸的景色, 可以說是湖南風景的代表 湘江是長江的支流, 而瀟水是湘江的支流 古時的瀟水, 也叫作深水, 原因是這條江水又深 又清 瀟水由湖南西南面流到南部的永州, 就與湘江合流 文化上我們慣以瀟湘並稱 除了 瀟湘, 湖南還有一條人所共知的江, 但這條江倒不是以水色見稱, 而是因著楚國大夫屈原的緣 故, 享名於世 這就是屈原投水自盡的汨羅江 在 3 月份的 樂在神州, 我們將會聽到古琴名家吳景略弟子楊麗寧所領奏的新編琴曲 瀟湘 水雲 陸春齡以笛子領奏的 瀟湘銀河 和范上娥領奏李煥之所作的古箏協奏曲 汨羅江幻 想曲 此外, 由於湖北與湖南在春秋戰國時代同屬楚地, 到了漢代則同屬荊州之地 因此, 我們將在另一集名為 荊楚故地話湖北 的節目裡, 欣賞編鐘古樂 楚商 塤曲 哀郢 和 模仿古樂的新作 荊楚雄風 我們會在其餘三集, 另以 徜徉浙江賞越韻 江西福建穿梭遊 和 深入黔桂採民風 為 題, 走遍浙 贛 閩 黔 桂五個省區, 以音樂探索當地的風土文化 這種免卻交通折騰的文化之旅, 你怎可以錯失? 21 MARCH 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 37 逢星期六下午 2 時正 Toby Wong 黃嘉浩 2018 年是第一次世界大戰結束一百週年 另外, 去年 11 月也是俄國革命一百週年紀念 故此, 世界各地會舉辦不同活動紀念各場戰爭的歷史, 相信香港也不例外 事實上, 在古典音樂世界中, 不少作曲家都會以戰爭為題材, 並在音樂中加入不同表情符號 (Emoji), 以表達戰爭中產生的強烈情感 這些作品都是古典音樂甚至是藝術世界的經典 3 月份, 就讓我帶大家走進不同作曲家譜寫戰爭音樂的情感世界! 節目製作中 戰爭與哀號戰爭中槍林彈雨, 傷亡慘重 二十世紀英國作曲家布烈頓的 戰爭安魂曲, 是為紀念二次大戰時柯芬翠大教堂被炸毀後的重建而寫, 歌詞表達了對傷亡士兵的哀悼 安魂曲的曲式自文藝復興時期開始, 是根據天主教經文為安魂彌撒而寫的音樂, 希望死者主懷安息, 進入天堂 戰爭安魂曲 除了有傳統的經文外, 布烈頓更加入一戰時期詩人歐文的詩句 詩中講述士兵在戰爭中痛苦和掙扎的內心世界, 並藉此表達戰爭的哀聲, 以警戒後世追求和平 戰爭與恐懼戰爭咄咄逼人的氣氛能在霍爾斯特 行星組曲 的 火星 反映出來 作品中每首樂曲代表著太陽系的一顆行星, 而每顆行星也有一個副標題 霍爾斯特創作此作品時臨近一戰的爆發, 而他為第一首 火星 安排了 戰爭使者 的副標題, 所以有人認為樂曲描寫了人們對戰爭的恐懼 既激昂又緊張的節奏貫穿了整首樂曲, 這個 5/4 拍子不規則的節奏首先由定音鼓和弦樂奏出, 由八分音符的三連音與兩個四分音符, 再加上兩個八分音符與一個四分音符組成 ( 見圖 ) 樂譜更指示弦樂部份須用弓背敲打琴弦演奏 (col legno) 其中銅管樂的怒吼, 為樂曲增加壓迫感 戰爭後的警惕 霍爾斯特 行星組曲 的 火星, 用了 5/4 拍子, 弦樂部份須用弓背敲打琴弦演奏 Copyright 1921 by Goodwin & Tabb, Ltd (London) 1905 年的俄國革命於聖彼得堡發生 蕭斯達高維契的 G 小調第十一交響曲又名 1905 年 作曲家於 1955 年動筆, 以紀念五十年前於聖彼得堡釀成的 血腥星期日 當時勞工遊行至 冬宮 廣場, 卻被軍隊鎮壓流血收場 似乎蕭斯達高維契無法忍受統治者的惡行, 選擇以音樂警惕世人 作品的第四樂章又稱為 警鐘, 銅管樂猛烈的聲響有如戰爭殘暴的境況 此樂章也含有革命歌曲 激怒吧, 暴君! 和 華沙之歌 的旋律 樂章最後更加入了管鐘的敲擊, 希望藉此 敲 醒眾人, 並以鐘聲諷刺革命和戰爭的殘酷 想了解更多與戰爭有關的情感音樂, 約定你逢星期六下午 2 時至 5 時 下一站 四台 的 音樂 Emoji 見 In March, the presenter of the segment Music Emoji, Toby Wong, will show you how to appreciate the musical elements and stories of classical music related to different emotions generated by wars. 35 52 MARCH 2018 FINE MUSIC COLUMNS 專欄 Wong Kin-ting 塵紓 Lee - Daphne Lee (Radio 4 producer) Wong - Wong Kin-ting (Critic and host of Music from China) 李 李德芬 ( 第四台監製 ) 塵 塵紓 ( 藝評人及 樂在神州 主持 ) Lee : Kin-ting, I know that you started your studies with English Literature. What interested you so much in literature? 李 : 塵紓, 我知道你早年曾經修讀西洋文學 究竟文學有甚麼吸引之處? Wong : Determined to be versatile in both Chinese and Western cultures, I chose to start with Western culture in my late teens. The Department of English Literature was an ideal place for an initial exposure to Western culture. With the benefit of English language study, I was amply exposed to the boundless domain of the humanities. The rich imagery and the condensed use of words in poetry always amuses me. I am also enlightened by the vivid characterisation and the lucid depiction of conflicts or personality change in fiction and drama. The bountiful sentiments displayed in prose are often amazing, as are the arguments and the rhetoric manifested in famous historical speeches. In sum, all forms of literature are, by any measure, effective portrayals of life and revelations of human nature, so varied and yet so universal. Lee : You later went to New Asia Institute of Advanced Chinese Studies and became one of the last students of renowned scholars. Was that your road of return to Chinese culture? Wong : After my sojourn in Western culture, I returned to Chinese culture. In my New Asia years, I was privileged to be a disciple of a group of prominent scholars. Most interestingly, they, as elites in the academic field, did not impart knowledge to me. Instead, they gave me sound advice on strict academic discipline and ways of thinking. Furthermore, we were required to take all available courses in literature, history, and philosophy, regardless of our intended field of study. Lee : Briefly tell us how your life has changed because of your study of the humanities. Wong : Contribute to your community by putting into practice what you have learned in your academic training is our life-long motto. I have strived to give back to the community what I attained from my respectable masters, though extremely insignificant in magnitude. 塵 : 少年立志, 要探究天人之際, 暢曉古今中外 當時既心繫中華, 深愛國學, 但又有意遠望西洋, 中外廣納 ; 於是釐定計策, 先攻西學, 然後回歸國學 入讀英文系, 目的是以外文作為鑰匙, 開啟西洋文化寶庫 我認為文學有助參悟人性, 理解人生 從意象豐富 用字精煉的詩作, 盡顯眾生共相殊相的小說和戲劇, 講求層次鋪排又或純然抒懷遣興的散文, 以至雄辯滔滔而有助刺激思辨的演辭, 我都領受不淺 文學是真實環境裡人生百態的印證 李 : 及後你在新亞研究所追隨戲曲大師汪經昌和一代大儒徐復觀修業, 做了他們的關門弟子, 並得到哲學大師牟宗三 史學名家全漢昇等教誨 這就是你從西洋文化走回中國文化的道路? 塵 : 在西洋學海繞了一個大圈, 當然要回歸國學 其時有幸得列 新亞 門墻, 仰蒙諸位大師指導 當時的 新亞, 根本是文史哲不分家 管你本意主修那一科, 在所多年, 文史哲裡甚麼科目都得修畢 再者, 諸位大師上課, 絕少講授知識, 而是教導治學法則和思考方法 李 : 可否簡述, 中西文史哲裡的諸般學問, 在你生命有甚麼體現 塵 : 經世致用 是儒生學子的終極道路 盡己所學, 回報社會, 服務人群, 是我輩終身之責 自己前半生即使只是從先輩前賢承襲了丁點皮毛, 但也須敬盡微力, 獻與同道, 傳給後進 Quenching my thirst for knowledge 黃金屋 書中尋 Starting April, Wong Kin-ting and Daphne Lee will present a new programme entitled How We See Literature, History, and Philosophy every Sunday at 10am, discussing a wide range of interesting issues in that vast realm of knowledge, in conjunction with a deliberate choice of music pieces. 4 月份逢星期日上午 10 時, 塵紓和李德芬會主持把盞妙論文史哲, 與你一同探索中國文史哲的一些有趣課題 節目當然少不了介紹相關的音樂, 讓你一邊重溫我國文化, 一邊欣賞音樂家如何以樂韻與文史哲對應 黃歷
