2 TEAM NEWS TEAM NEWS TEAM NEWS 6th GRADE SCIENCE Mr. Corah /Mr. Windmiller The science classes in the 6th grade are now into their look at our solar system. Most of this month will be spent focusing on the relationship between our sun, moon and Earth. We start the month looking at why the moon has phases and why we can always see the same side of the moon from Earth. Ask your child to demonstrate the rotation, revolution, and phases of the moon after we finish the Man on the Moon investigation. Our study will continue by looking at the causes of solar and lunar eclipses and the moon s impact on our ocean tides. February will end with students studying our solar system and the characteristics of the items found within it. 8th GRADE KEYBOARDING & COMPUTER EXPLORATION -Mrs. Hipskind The eighth graders are off and running in Keyboarding. Students are using the Mavis Beacon program to practice their keyboarding speed and accuracy. Many students have seen a huge increase in their typing technique since their 7th grade quarter of class. Eighth graders have a new goal of typing at 30 AWPM by the end of the quarter. Online practice lessons and games can be found on Mrs. Hipskind s web page so students can practice at home too. MS Excel is the current unit of study in eighth grade. Students are learning how to create and format spreadsheets with formulas, functions, and charts. An Excel final project will be given MATH Mrs. Silveus/Mr.Koehlinger Wow, where did the first half of the year go? Academic classes will start the month by jumping ahead to working with integers, absolute values, and the coordinate plane. Then we will dive into Orders of Operations and exploring Area in a different form including irregular figures. Accelerated classes will be working on identifying triangles and polygons along with reflections and translations on a coordinate plane. To finish the month we will be exploring Area of irregular figures and orders of operation. ISTEP preparation will be done weekly through all math classes. Continue to study hard and commit yourself to getting work in on time. Good luck on ISTEP! on February 3rd to access the skills they have learned. After that, a Movie Maker project focused on a person from US History will begin. Watch Mrs. Hipskind s web page for more information on that big upcoming project. SOCIAL STUDIES Mr. Kochert/Mr. Lochmueller The students did an outstanding job on their Ancient Greece Projects! Thanks for helping your student prepare for this assignment. Throughout February the kids will be studying Ancient Rome. Like Ancient Greece, the Roman unit will consist of one test and a project. Please continue to check your student s homework and grades via our website. As always please let us know of any questions or concerns that you might have in regards to your student. SCIENCE Mr. Clinkenbeard/Mrs. McNiece Students in 8th grade science will have the opportunity to understand what makes the weather around us. Students will understand how air masses can affect weather and what weather fronts can bring to an area. We will dedicate some time studying the weather forces that affect northeast Indiana, including lake-effect snow storms and tornados. Students will all participate in the Indiana Tornado Project as we look at the number of tornado touchdowns per Indiana county over the last few decades.
