The band was organized before 1880 and averaged 15 to 20 members. When the band leader died in 1912, his ensemble was taken over by the American Rolling Mills Company, and became known as the Armco Band. The 7th Regiment Band was formed in 1900, condcted by Brce Tomlinson. For years later, band members began federal service in advent of war. The 7th Regiment and Armco bands held their concerts locally, in McIntire Park and Ptnam Park. By 1923, the two bands had merged, taking the present day name of Zanesville Memorial Concert Band. Today, fnds for the concerts are raised by individal and corporate contribtions. An endowment fnd has also been established for anyone wishing to make a donation towards the ZMCB. The band s crrent home is Zane s Landing Park, along the eastern banks of the Mskingm River in downtown Zanesville. Concerts are performed on five Snday evenings throgh the smmer. Concerts remain free to the pblic, thanks to the generosity of or spporters. 6 Thank Yo to Or Sponsors! Roger Cichy posers work. This type of work helped him frther learn the nances of instrmentation and how desired msical effects are achieved. Roger credits his arrangement, transcription and notation experience with helping him absorb mch abot other composers styles and helped develop his own strong sense of instrmental coloration. Today, Roger is a freelance composer and arranger, writing for high school, niversity and professional bands, professional orchestras, and the commercial msic indstry. His works range from small ensembles literatre to compositions and arrangements for marching band, concert band, and symphonic orchestra. He has over 300 compositions and arrangements to his name, inclding those pblished by Daehn Pblications, C. Alan Pblications, and LdwigMasters Pblications. Cichy s msic has been recorded by premier ensembles sch as the North Texas Wind Symphony, the United States Air Force Academy Band and the University of Georgia Wind Symphony. 7 Meet Or Gest Condctor Snday, Agst 3, 2014 / Zane s Landing Park Roger Cichy Thank Yo to Or Sponsors! Since the appearance of his first pblished work in 1985, Roger Cichy has been a prolific composer whose works often paint experiences and emotions on a canvas of sond. His compositions seek to express sch intangible things as the slow growing momentm of daybreak, the chaotic, ot-of-control natre of pandemonim, and the gracefl, lyrical movement of a sand dne. Contained in his works are the msical descriptions of the discovery of the Titanic, the emotional atmosphere of honor and pride at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and the all-inspiring majesty of Colorado s Pike Peak. The composer s works contain a nmber of signatre elements, among them is his niqe se of rhythm and prononced se of percssion. In many of his works, Cichy employs what he calls compelling rhythms, whose repetition drive his melodies forward. His appreciation for percssion s nlimited sonds and timbres is also notable. Cichy s work is frther defined by his fondness for jazz rhythms, liberal se of strong contermelodies, and thick harmonic textre. Roger Cichy brings his backgrond as a msic edcator to his work as a composer. Roger holds a Bachelor of Msic and Master of Arts in Msic Edcation degree from The Ohio State University, bt also did extensive stdy in composition with Edward Montgomery, Marshall Barnes and Joseph Levey at Ohio State. He has directed concert bands and marching bands at the elementary, high school and college levels, serving as Director of Bands at both the University of Rhode Island and Iowa State University. In addition to his formal classroom training, Cichy also credits other fondational experiences with helping him acqire compositional skills. Among them was his work as a gradate stdent where he copied msic, extracting parts from scores. He also had a nmber of opportnities to arrange other com- 10 7
