2 ENFIELD CITADEL BAND Founded in Tottenham, North London in 1892, the band soon established a reputation as one of the foremost Salvation Army bands. It was one of the first to broadcast for the BBC and many gramaphone records have been made, including in 1961 the first long-playing record by a corps band. The band has also been featured on radio and television in this country and overseas. In 1972, with the merging of the two Salvation Army corps, the band moved to Enfield on the outskirts of North London, and adopted its present title. There, as before, the band's service has continued in open-air activities, visits to hospitals, etc., in the same way as Salvation Army bands throughout the world. Enfield Citadel Band travels extensively to present its ministry of Salvation Army music making througout the British Isles and overseas. The forthcoming tour will be the band's second visit to Canada following a tour of the eastern states of Canada and the USA in Tours of Sweden, Norway, Holland, Australia and New Zealand have also been completed. Among former bandmasters are several wellknown Salvation Army musicians, including Colonel Albert Jakeway, Bandmaster Ernest Edwards and Lt. Col. Ray Steadman-Allen. The present bandmaster, James Williams, was appointed in January 1960 and, under his leadership, the band has confirmed its reputation for the highest possible standards whether on the concert platform, in the recording studio or going about its usual weekly activities. LEADERS. BANDMASTER - JAMES WILLIAMS Bandmaster, Jarnes Williams joined the cornet section of Tottenham Citadel Band (now Enfield) in 1944, whilst serving with the Band of Her Majesty's Grenadier Guards. Since then, he has set a high standard of consistency in his continuous service with the band as principal cornet, deputy bandmaster and, for the last 26 years, as bandmaster. In addition, Bandmaster Williams has been a member of the Rosehill Band and the SP&S Band, conducted by Eric Ball and, on a number of occasions, has appeared with the International Staff Band. Renowned as an excellent soloist both in and outside the Salvation Army, this will be the Bandmaster's fourth visit to Canada. He was featured by Dovercourt Citadel and Hamilton Temple as guest soloist/conductor in 1963 and 1982 respectively and led the band during its previous tour of Canada in CAPTAIN SHAW CLIFTON IHQ REPRESENTATIVE Captain Shaw Clifton is accompanying the band as the representative of the Salvation Army's International Headquarters. Captain Clifton entered the International Training College in 1971 after teaching, for a number of years, in the Law Faculty at Bristol University. He has served as an officer on the British Field, including three years as the commanding officer at Enfield Citadel, and in Zimbabwe. His present appointment, since 1982, is as Legal Secretary at International Headquarters.
