4 About Sakhioba Out of their great love for the folk and sacred music of Georgia, members of Georgia s newest generation of musicians created the ensemble Sakhioba. Founded at the beginning of 2006, Sakhioba is guided by the experience and knowledge of its director, Malkhaz Erkvanidze. The 12 members of Sakhioba all studied Georgian sacred music from an early age, first at the Sioni Cathedral Parish School, progressing to various church choirs as their skills developed. As Georgia s folk singing has close ties to its sacred music, the ensemble has also dedicated itself to folklore studies, including the study of traditional folk dances and instrumental music.

5 The word sakhioba means sweet singing, either with instruments or voices. The Sakhioba ensemble is committed to the revival of traditional Georgian music, paying special attention to the intonation, timbre and arrangements of the remaining masters of traditional singing. Malkhaz Erkvanidze is a world authority on Georgian polyphonic music. He has spent his professional life rescuing church hymns and prayers suppressed under Soviet communism. His six books of Georgian hymns have been published with CDs and he has written many articles about the distinctive musical structure of Georgian polyphony. For over 20 years he was leader of the

6 Anchiskhati Choir, dedicated to preserving the authentic Georgian tuning system. Sakhioba has produced five albums, has performed numerous times on Georgian radio and TV and was honoured as the Laureate of the State Folk Festival in 2006.

7 Sakhioba Ensemble members: Malkhaz Erkvanidze comes from the Imereti region. He studied musicology at the Tbilisi State Conservatoire. Since then he has done many field trips in various regions of Georgia. He founded and led Anchiskhati choir for 20 years, he rescued and published 6 volumes of Georgian church hymns and he has been teaching Georgian Traditional Music for more than 30 years now. He has a wife and three children. He sings middle and bass parts. He also makes rather good wine. Davit Abramishvili also comes from Imereti region. As a young boy, he studied Georgian church hymns in Kutaisi, later he completed his studies of Georgian Traditional music in Tbilisi. He joined Sakhioba in 2010 and sings top and krimanchuli (yodelling) parts. Tornike Kandelaki is the youngest member of the group and he s been singing since childhood. He comes from the Racha region. He is student at the Academy of Georgian Song and Chant in Tbilisi. He joined Sakhioba in Tornike sings top and krimanchuli parts.

8 Soso Kopaleishvili is from the Imereti region. He has sung since he was 4 years old. His father taught him singing and playing Panduri. He is now a student at the Academy of Georgian Song and Chant in Tbilisi. Soso sings top and middle parts. Beka Kovziashvili comes from the Kartli region, East Georgia. He is also full time student at the Academy of Georgian Song and Chant in Tbilisi. Beka started singing in a church choir in Tbilisi in 2007 and at the same time joined Sakhioba. He sings top and middle parts. Davit Shukakidze comes from the Imereti region. He has been singing with his family since his childhood. Davit is an Economist and has a wife and two children. He sings middle and bass parts.

9 Giorgi Gvimradze has been member of Sakhioba from the start. He has a family. and sings middle part. Davit Jamrishvili comes from Mtiuleti. He is a painter and enamel artist. He started singing at the Academy of Arts, in Tbilisi. He has been a member of Sakhioba since its creation. Davit sings middle part and also designs Sakhioba s artwork. Grigor (Giga) Amiranashvili is from Imereti. He started singing when he was a child. He is an economist and studies theology. He joined Sakhioba in Giga sings bass.

10 Giorgi Dzaganishvili is an Economist and he has been singing in various groups in Tbilisi since He has been a member of Sakhioba since its creation. Giorgi sings bass. Guja Narimanashvili is from Tbilisi. He is an economist and has a family. He started singing in 2001 with Otar Berdzenishvili, a famous song master from Guria. He met Malkhaz Erkvanidze while studying church hymns and joined Sakhioba when they were first formed. He sings bass. Vladimer (Lado) Shonia is from Samegrelo and is an Engineer. He started singing when he was 6 years old in a school choir. Later he started singing at the Khobi church. Vladimer joined Sakhioba from the beginning. He sings bass.
