5 5 Important! All group classes and ensembles are considered tentative until the minimum student enrollment is met. Course Descriptions Music Instruction New! Performer Option Any student enrolled in a group or private lesson may join any 55 minute ensemble class for just per semester, or any 75 minute ensemble class for per semester. Students must meet minimum requirements, and placement depends on space available. Students must pass the required audition for advanced ensembles. Beginning Ensembles CHOIR 101 Elementary Choir, Grades 2-6 Students will learn a repertoire of 8 12 works, including patriotic, sacred, secular and educational pieces. Instruction will focus on tone production, rhythmic reading and performance, basic vocal technique, and knowledge of composers and music history. 6 6 CHOIR110 Junior Show Choir Grades 3-6 Repertoire is kept age appropriate and fun as students improve their basic vocal technique, range, proper breathing, and ensemble skills. Simple choreography, dancing, and movement will be incorporated in songs, and increase in difficulty as the repertoir e progresses. Students will be encouraged to participate and work as a team in making creative decisions about props, concert attire, and other aspects of performance. All students will have the opportunity to audition for solos, and will receive vocal coaching. Class will culminate in a recital each semester. 2 semesters. Tuesdays, 3:30-4:25 Instructor(s): Joshua Landin Minimum enrollment: 6, per semester with Performer Option STRING101 Beginning String Ensemble, Grades 1-6 This ensemble is for beginner string students who have started to read music. As a prerequisite, violin, viola, and cello students need to have finished book one of the string method series they are studying. This program is designed to help students learn to listen to each other, follow the conductor, follow dynamics, and count while reading and playing beginning string orchestra music. An audition is required. 2 semesters. Try our affordable group classes! Students will learn basic technique for their chosen instrument, in addition to simple songs and fundamentals of music. Students will have an option to perform their pieces in recital at the end of each semester. GROUP140 Group Flute (Grades 3-6, 7-12) Wednesdays, 3:30-4:25 (7-12) Fridays, 3:30-4:25 (3-6) Instructor: Dana Cary Minimum Enrollment: 4 Maximum Enrollment: 8 Musical Theater DRAMA101 Intro to Musical Theater, Grades K-2 Each class will build upon a different theme designed to draw out a child's natural inclination to play pretend while learning the basic elements of Musical Theater. Using the foundations of dramatic play, this class develops skills in characterization, coordination, coop erative play and musicianship. 50 minute classes, 1x per week, 2 semesters. 8 8 DRAMA104 What a Character! Grades 3-6 In this class students will explore how to build a character using theater games and exercises. They will learn how to portray different character types through acting, music and movement. 55 minute classes, 1x per week, 2 semesters. Wednesdays, 3:30-4:25 Instructor: Joshua Landin Maximum enrollment: 8 DRAMA102/103 Act Like You Mean It, Grades 3-6. Grades 7-12 This is the ideal course for beginning acting students. Designed to teach students the skill of reading plays aloud with verbal and facial expression, this course teaches the essentials of Readers Theatre characterization, and styles of Readers Theatre directing and scripting techniques, as well as acting and audition techniques for Comedy, Physical Theater, Commercials, and Musical Theater. This class is excellent for gaining self-confidence and for preparing students for Drama, Speech, or Radio and Television. 2 semesters. Mondays, 3:30-4:25 (Grades 7-12), Tuesdays, 4:30-5:25 (Grades 3-6) Instructors: Joshua Landin (7-12), Valerie Washington (3-6) Maximum enrollment: 8 DRAMA120 Musical Theater Production, Grades 3-12 Musical Theater Production is the performance aspect of the Musical Theater program. There will be two major productions during the school year. Students may audition for each performance during the first week of each semester. Enrollment in Musical Theater classes is recommended, but not required. 9 9 Musicianship and Theory THEORY100 Music Fundamentals, Grades K-2 Music Fundamentals emphasizes creativity, musical explorations, and the joy of making music. Activities include singing, ear training, rhythm, and movement. Students are also introduced to the keyboard, guitar, and various percussion instruments. Participation in the end of the semester recital is optional, but highly recommended. 2 semesters. Tuesdays, 1:30-2:20, 3:30-4:20 Instructors: Katie Tanner Minimum Enrollment: 4 Maximum enrollment: 8 THEORY101/102 Musicianship and Theory, Grades 3-6, Grades 7-12 Musicianship and Theory deals with the basics of music; from scale degrees and intervals, to basic chords, inversions, and chord progressions. By the end of the year, the students should know how to identify basic chords in a piece, as well as write their own chord progressions and compose their own pieces. Students will present their final pieces in the Composer s Recital in May. Students must have completed at least 3 semesters of private lessons. Placement test or teacher recommendation is required. 2 semesters. Wednesdays, 4:30-5:25 Instructor: Joshua Washington, per semester with Performer Option Performance Ensembles CHOIR105 Concert Choir (Grades 7-12) This is a year-long, mid to upper-level performance opportunity offered to more experienced music students who are more accomplished in vocal performance. Students will continue to develop vocal technique and musicianship as well as develop critical thinking skills through the analysis of musical elements, including form and text. Students are expected to participate in two concerts during the year as well as the Annual Reclaim Concert in May. 10 10 BAND105 Garage Band 1 (Grades 7-12) In this class, students will learn the important musical and social aspects of playing in a band. As a prerequisite, students must have completed one year of study in their instrument, and must be able to read music. Singing proficiency is not required, but students must be willing to sing in this class, as it is essential for pitch recognition, interval recognition and r elative pitch. There is a strong performance aspect to Garage Band. An audition is required. 2 semesters. Tuesdays, 4:00-5:15 Instructor: TBD Minimum enrollment: 5, per semester with Performer Option BAND110 Jazz Ensemble (Grades 7-12) This ensemble allows students to explore the harmonic, rhythmic, and melodic basis for jazz and pop composition and performance. Students will analyze and perform jazz standards and arrangements in preparation for community and school-related performances. Students will gain a thorough knowledge of scales and harmonic construction and exhibit their knowledge of composition and arrangement through performances of standard repertoire and their own compositions (where appropriate) throughout the school year. Participation in this ensemble is by audition only. An audition consists of sight reading, playing scales, and playing a prepared solo on your instrument. Scholarships are available. 2 semesters. Mondays, 5:00-6:15 Instructor: Randy Sandoli Minimum enrollment: 5, per semester with Performer Option STRING105 Piano Trio (Grades 7-12) The Zion Academy Piano Trio consists of piano, violin, and cello. Instruction will focus on the intricacies of ensemble playing such as tone color, cohesiveness and interpretation. This class will explore diverse repertoire at a high performance standard. At least three years instrumental study, preferably at the private instruction level, is essential. Audition or instructor recommendation required. 2 semesters. 11 11 CHOIR115 Show Choir I (Grades 7-12) Students will develop vocal technique, range, proper breathing, and ensemble skills. Beginners typically receive weekly, 30 minute lessons, and more advanced students typically receive between 45 and 60 minute lessons. 12 12 Humanities and Social Sciences High school courses can meet a-g requirements upon request. Additional coursework and a semester final are required. Art ART110/120 The Art of Music (Grades 3-6, Grades 7-8) The Art of Music is a hybrid class employing elements of both art and music fundamentals to give students an understanding of how both creative practices influence each other. In this class students will learn basic art elements (color, line, space, texture, etc.) and principles (emphasis, repetition, contrast, etc) and apply them to various styles of music, both classical and contemporary. Students will also be able to associate things like color and medium with certain moods or feelings, and apply them to different styles and genres of music. This course will a llow young artists and musicians alike to be able to explore a new path of creativity, while employing artistic elements and principles into their music to help strengthen and grow them as composers. Wednesdays, 10:00-11:15 (7-12), 11:30-12:45 (3-6) Instructor: Leah Washington Cultural Anthropology CUAN109 Literary Studies: The Superhero (Grades 7-12) This course will examine the history of comic books and super hero tales as American Folklore, from the the first heroes to grace the page in the 1940s to the present day blockbuster hits. Beyond studying various readings, films, and television episodes, the course will tackle q uestions of morality, patriotism, and gender, and how this American tradition is being adapted for present day. Students will be required to complete two essay assignments over the course of the semester, as well as an in - class presentation. Thursdays, 10:00-11:15 Instructor: Sara Washington

13 13 English/Language Arts Creative Writing WRIT110/120 Storytelling (Grades 3-6, 7-12) The primary objective of this course is to introduce students to the elements of effective storytelling techniques and develop his or her ability to articulate these elements through a variety of genres, including creative writing, oral storytelling, acting/scriptwriting, and print journalism. 1 semester. Wednesdays, 10:00-11:15 (3-6), 11:30-12:45 (7-12) Instructor: Valerie Washington WRIT 210/220 Storytelling II (Grades 3-6, 7-12) Students will continue to develop the elements of effective storytelling techniques and articulate them through longer, more in depth assignments. In addition to genres previously introduced in 101, students will develop skills in non-fiction storytelling (nature/travel writing). Begins January 7, Wednesdays, 10:00-11:15 (3-6), 11:30-12:45 (7-12) Instructor: Valerie Washington Film Studies FILM104 The Musical (Grades 7-12) An introduction to critical theory, cultural studies, and history of the film genre known as "The Musical." This course will explore this concept from its Depression-era roots to present day. From The Jazz Singer to High School Musical. 14 14 History HIST History through Fiction Students will study the major turning points in American History in the twentieth century using traditional textbooks as well as historical fiction appropriate for their age and reading level. Students will also learn the elements of good historical fiction, and create their own stories based on historical events of their choosing.
